Jeff Van Gundy Officially Fired

Jeff Van Gundy was dismissed as Rockets coach on Friday, less than two weeks after the Rockets' first-round loss to the Utah Jazz.

After initial ambivalence about returning to the team as coach, Van Gundy had made his desire to be back clear. The Rockets, however, had already begun an extensive interview process with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman who is considered the only candidate to replace Van Gundy.

Van Gundy had told the Rockets that he would not object to the team looking into its coaching options.

On Thursday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey offered Van Gundy another position with the team, expected to be in a consulting role. Van Gundy has turned down that role.

Rumor is Journey is the leading candidate to replace Van Gundy. He is denying but has been seen at a dinner with Houston's Owners. Journeyman should be the next head coach of Houston and that is a good move.

Stupid move by my Rockets...IMO
He didnt get along w/ alexander the owner. The owner would complain about the way Jeff looked after games during the post game interviews...lol

I heard they already were interviewing Adelman over the past few days, who is the leading candidate... I could have sworn Van Gundy resigned two weeks ago, I must have dreampt it.

Max whatever happened with the Calvin Murphy siutuation, has that been decided or is he still awaiting a trial?

MLB Manager is a lot better than the NFL coordinator. Those NFL jobs you work a lot of hours (A LOT), watch a lot of film, very stressful and get little glory. Also money is better in MLB.

Plus I only have played John Madden for 14 yrs as my only real NFL 'experience' on my resume'

FWIW, i thinK Van Gundy was a very good coach, but change needed to be made. He's proven to be very stubborn (didn't feel we needed a bench, Alston would be solid pg, etc.) and lost his last two playoff series after being up 2-0.

Doubt he's going to coach next year.
He's establishing a pattern of going at it hard core when he coaches and burning himself out. Then he takes a break for a while and goes again.
He'll be in the broadcast booth next year.

In September 2004, five of Murphy's daughters claimed that they were sexually abused by Murphy as children, and Murphy was charged with three counts each of oral sex on a defenseless child and aggravated sexual assault. The five daughters were all from extramarital affiars and did not live with Murphy. As a result of the allegations, Murphy's job with the Houston Rockets organization was terminated. He denied these charges in court, and he was acquitted in a jury trial. Nevertheless, the Houston Rockets chose not to rehire him.
