Because he considers himself Canadian cause he was raised in Victoria and has a Canadian passport. In the end its his decision just like my personal fav the American sounding Hakeem Olajuwon playing for team USA after he took up citizenship in the states.

Just seems weird.... would be like Kobe calling himself Italian because he grew up there.

Same reason Ewing is considered American. They are citizens of said country.

Is he African-American then ?

Funny (and true) story, dude I went to law school with got a free ride on an "of african descent" scholarship and was whiter than anyone on here. White dude born in South Africa, raised mainly in European boarding schools, spoke like 4 or 5 languages, went to Brown. The way the question was asked on the applications he somehow fit within the description and they threw money at him.

Best part, when someone asked him about it, in his perfect English accent he answers "I'm more African than X and Y (referring to two of the black guys at school)"

What is so weird about it, He has no memory of South Africa since his parents moved when he was a baby. Everything to him growing up was Canadian based, while he wasn't born here he I'm sure he considers himself Canadian since up to the point he went to Santa Clara he spent living in Canada.

Bryant moved to Italy with his dad when he was 6 so he already partly grew up American or atleast his first experiences were based around American culture and lifestyle besides Kobe only lived in Italy for 5 years.

With Nash he only knew Canadaian culture growing up and even if you wish to add his British parents there is little difference between growing up British and Canadian esp in a city like Victoria its almost one in the same there.

Has anyone ever heard an announcer mention Nash being born in South Africa to English parents? It's only always Canada....

With guys like Hakeem, Deng, etc, they always mention their African country of origin.

Well, I guess I'm a little sore because my Canadian friend keeps bragging how a "Canadian" is the best player in the NBA. I keep telling him he was born in South Africa to English parents but he won't hear of it.

You let what an announcer says bug you that much? At the end of the day he is consider Canadian because the man himself considers himself to be Canadian, who cares if Doug Collins says or doesn't say.

He isn't one of the best players in the world because he was born in South African that has nothing to do with it. He doesn't consider himself South African so why it is important that some announcer mentions it. The two time MVP is Canadian if you wanna add an *to add born in South Africa to English parents so be it but he is Canadian and I'm sure if you ask him wishes to be acknowledged as one.

Nash is a Canadian Citizen, came here when he was under two.

Ewing is the better example, he was born in Jamaica and moved to the US when he was 13. Duncan was born in USVI, USVI citizens have US citizenship.
