i live outside Detroit and remember the Tigers dominating that season but I was still too young to really comprehend and keep up with the whole league.

His stats were not great but they were very efficient. The AL must have really sucked that year

Willie: 9-3, 1.92, 32 saves in 33 chances, 80 games, 112 strikeouts in 140 innings

those numbers would not even get a chance for a MVP today, and most relievers don't have a chance for the MVP

The closer role was a little different back then....

Hernandez pitched a TON that year....he didn't just come in to start the 9th, and as i recall he was damn good and almost perfect, he saved just about everything ....plus he won 9 games, look at his innings pitched , 140 innings for your closer is not going to happen again...he pitched in every other game for 2 innings on avg , think about it.

plus in 1984 the Tigers just dominated from start to finish, they didn't have ONE real standout player on offense , just a lot of good hitting from top to bottom....Hernandez was a huge part of that season, it seemed like he pitched every game.

but you would think someone would bat over .330 and have a bunch of homers and RBI and get the MVP

has another closer/reliever won the MVP ever?

Hrbek was great when he broke in...that spring training he was homering like a wild man, and carried it right into the season, between him and Gaetti they had two thumpers for the time...the Quiz was lights out and like Hernandez was one of those rubber armed closers who could log a lot of innings , he died of brain cancer about ten yrs ago.

Twins all grew up at once...they really were a tough team to beat in that damn park.

Did you go to Tigers Stadium much? I miss that old park.

Willie was a total stud that season.

If anyone could do what he did then now on a year to year basis. He would make 20 mil per season.

Just think about having a guy that pitches 80 games a year with a sub 2 ERA and converts over 96% of there saves.

If only the Cubs would have resigned him. Let him walk dead to the Tigers in his prime. Also gave up Craig Lefferts whom cam back to haunt the Cubs, BIG.

i didn't go there a lot, but i liked it more than Comerica Park

and my first tiger game was against your Orioles around 1983 i believe Baltimore won 7-2 or something close to that
