Money can go far in London if you map out a good game plan before you go. You can go anywhere using the Tube for a few dollars a day....don't even think of getting a car. London is an easy city to get around in. I stayed right in Picadilly Circus (comparable to Times Square) for $100 bucks a night a few years ago. Can get half decent fast food for $5 a meal. Count on $150 a day.
As with any city, it has its good spots and its bad spots, depends where you go. I don't go that often, mostly just for football, and Tottenham/North London isn't the nicest area, but I've never had any problems there (primarily because there's a layer of police between the Spurs and Arsenal fans after the NLD
