Coast Guard searching for Patriots DE Hill in Lake Pontchartrain
Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews continued searching Lake Pontchartrain on Monday for New England Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill, who was reported missing following a jetski accident.

"We searched throughout the night," said Petty Officer Tom Atkeson.

Hill's agent, Albert Elias, said he had been told Hill and a young woman were jetskiing Sunday in the lake when both of them went into the water, which had a strong current. Elias said the woman was able to make it to a pylon and hang on until she was rescued, while Hill was last scene floating away from the scene.

"I'm an optimistic guy," Elias told WWL television in New Orleans. "He's a strong kid and a fighter."

Hill played on LSU's 2004 national championship team and was drafted in the second round by New England.

"We are all shocked," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. "We can only hope and pray that the search and rescue is successful. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marquise and his family. We know that Marquise is a strong young man and will remain optimistic while continuing to pray for his rescue."

The Coast Guard was using both boats and a helicopter search the shoreline, Atkeson said. Wildlife and Fisheries was using a recovery line that drags the bottom of the water.

A call came in around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Atkeson said. The woman, whose identity was not available Monday morning, was rescued and sent to Tulane Medical Center where she told them Hill had tried to keep her calm even as the two were drifting away from each other.

Neither Hill nor the woman wore a life preserver, Atkeson said.

"It's so important to have a life jacket and a signaling device," Atkeson said. "One keeps you afloat and the other helps us find you."

Elias said Hill has spent much of his time since Hurricane Katrina helping family members rebuild their homes.

Horrible news!

And yes, you need a life jacket. When you fall off a jetski, you do so at 30-60mph. Best case, it knocks the wind out of you. Worst case, it knocks you out. Waterski/Jetski lifejackets are not like boat preservers. These ones are actually made to keep your face out of the water so if you are knocked out, you still breath air.

I didn't know a lake could have strong currents.

How did the woman manage to make it to a pylon, but Hill couldn't? Did the guy know how to swim?

I didn't know a lake could have strong currents.

It's a brackish lake that connects to the Gulf.

Coast Guard search continues for NFL player

Authorities have turned their search from rescue to recovery for former LSU football standout Marquise Hill, now a defensive end for the New England Patriots, who went missing Sunday night after falling off a jet ski in Lake Pontchartrain.

Lt. Steve McManus of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said officials decided to focus on recovering Hill's body after witnesses saw him go under the water without resurfacing. Authorities are trying to determine with the help of family members Hill's exact location at the time he and a woman fell from the craft, McManus said.

Petty Officer Tom Atkeson said the Coast Guard has crews in a helicopter and boat searching the lake near the Industrial Canal. Wildlife and Fisheries also is participating in the effort with another boat.

A man and woman were reported falling into the water from a recreational craft about 9 p.m. Sunday. They apparently were heading to the Seabrook boat launch. The Orleans Levee Board Police said that a passing boat had briefly picked up the man, but he jumped back in the water to look for the woman.

The woman was rescued after a passerby heard someone calling for help. The woman had apparently grabbed onto a piling or other structure in the lake.

Atkeson said the search for Hill will continue at least as long as daylight hours today.

Hill, a New Orleans native who graduated from De La Salle High School, has played in the NFL since 2004 and was a member of LSU's national championship-winning 2003 Tigers.

I have jetski'd for about 10 years, I always use the safety device around my wrist....I have taken off the jacket at times, but always use the wrist safety ....if you fall off the ski should cut off...its still risky because you could knock yourself out if your playing around jumping waves....I cracked my ass bone real good once, thought I broke it.

Jetski accidents seem to be on the decline... we're not hearing about that many like we did say 6-7 years ago, when every drunk fool was running into somebody.

Why would he jump back in the water for the girl if he was in a boat? If the currents were that strong he should have stayed in the boat, its a lot easier to look for someone in the water from up high like a boat than in the water at night....Is it dark at 9PM in Louisiana?

Something strange in all this.......

Lost a freind to a jetski accident, crashed, thought he was fine then died in sleep. Gets boring after 15 minutes, you can only do so much.
