<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->NEW YORK -- The San Francisco Giants traded struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night.
Benitez was not in the clubhouse after the Giants' 4-2 loss and his locker was completely cleaned out.
"Maybe Elvis has left the building," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Benitez was 0-3 with nine saves in 11 chances and a 4.67 ERA. His final game for the Giants was Tuesday night, when he balked twice in the 12th inning of a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets.
On his last pitch for San Francisco, he gave up a game-ending home run to Carlos Delgado.
Benitez is owed $5,066,666 from the remainder of his $7.6 million salary this year, of which Florida will pay $333,333 and San Francisco will pay $4,733,333.
The 34-year-old Benitez returns to Florida, where he set a team record with a career-high 47 saves in 2004. That was his only season with the Marlins, and he signed with the Giants as a free agent after that season.
A hard thrower, Benitez is prone to getting excitable on the mound. He has 289 saves in a major league career that began in 1994, but has had particular trouble in the postseason.
Last week, he caused himself trouble by blaming San Francisco hitters for not scoring enough runs.
Earlier Thursday, on his weekly KNBR radio program, Giants general manager Brian Sabean said the team needed to fix the bullpen.
"We've got to the point where we are going to have to do something, and hopefully within the next 24 or 48 hours we'll resolve it internally or externally," he said. "Right now we are exploring options."
Messenger was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA going into the Marlins' game at Milwaukee. He is making the major league minimum of $380,000 this season.
In three seasons, the 25-year-old righty is 3-8 with a 4.98 ERA in 111 relief appearances.

I believe Armando had one of his best year's when he was with Florida. Guess they are hoping to recapture that magic. Can't figure out why they would bother though and give away a decent, fairly young pitcher.

He couldn't before. Armando might have to sell drugs on the side.

Actually he did, he had a really good year last time he was w/ FLA causing SF to sign him to his current fat contract.

He must of been really disliked in that locker room for the Giants to dump him and eat his salary too since if they atleast waited to the trading deadline SF would of got something more for him.

I forgot he was good there. I always picture him choking with the Mets.

For the fantasy guys out there, Brad Hennessey is the new favorite for saves.

Bye! Bye! Couldn't be happier. This guy is a nightmare trying to save a game. The 2 balks against the Mets was enough for Sabean to get rid on him.

He must of been...
Why would a closer say that the offense sucks.Doesn't he mostly come in,when he has the lead:ughhh:
I also read that the giants had to throw into the deal 5 bats and a bag of balls:thumbsup:

In 2004, Benitez has a career high 47 saves with the Marlins.
The other stat that stood out is that he's never had an ERA below 4.00. Pretty amazing for a closer.

Red,
You are correct I read the stats page wrong. BTW, www.baseball-reference.com is a must for any serious baseball fan.
If you go to Benitez' career stats, you will see where I screwed up.

Anyway, the year he had 47 saves for the Fish he had a 1.26 ERA or something ridiculous.

There was a 5 year stretch where Armando was one of the top 3 closers in the game. His problem was choking in the really big spots like in the playoffs or against the yankees (while on the mets). Other than that he was a great regular season closer.
