WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- What better way to sweeten the first days of summer than with a mouth watering doughnut from Krispy Kreme! In celebration of National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 1, participating Krispy Kreme stores throughout the U.S. will offer customers a free doughnut of their choice. This annual event invites Krispy Kreme fans to enjoy a free doughnut as a thank you for their continued support.
National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts for thousands of soldiers. National Doughnut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June.
"National Doughnut Day is a perfect time for us to give a little something back to our loyal customers throughout the country," said Stan Parker, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Krispy Kreme. "It's also a great opportunity to build awareness and acknowledge the continued good work of the Salvation Army."
Be sure to visit a participating Krispy Kreme location on Friday, June 1 to receive a free doughnut and celebrate the sweetest day of the year! Also, take a minute to check out some of our newest menu choices including doughnut holes to go, Krispy Kreme Chillers, and our new Whole Wheat doughnut.

Economic principle: No free lunch

Cost more in gas trying to find one then pay for the doughnut so most people won't do it. Nice publicity though.

These things are so sweet I can't eat more than one.
Really? Is that what they are like? I've never even had one.

If I splurge and eat a doughnut I get Dunkin plain or the glazed. Maybe chocolate covered.

KK doughnuts are way overrated. Much better donuts at local places that have been around for awhile.

I agree that they are overrated. I never did see what the big draw was.

Then again, I'm not much of a sugar junkie anymore, and basically want to puke after eating one of these sugar soaked dough balls.

As most of you probably know, you must get the KK glazed when they are hot right out of the oven. Most stores will light up the blinking sign outside to let you know that they are hot.

If you get them when they are cool they are nothing special. When they are warm it is a mystical experience, but I do agree that 1 donut should be your max, so you must chew very slowly and savor every morsal. If you are greedy and do eat the second one you will still enjoy it, but 15 minutes or so later you will regret that you had it and will start rubbing your belly and moaning.

If you have a significant other, buy 3 of them and split the third one, as this should prevent an upset belly later. If you have just started dating, you can each bite into the third donut at the same time and slowly but surely start moving closer to each other by chewing the donut until none remains. I am married so I don't bother with these shananigans, but would love to live vicarously though others so if you do try this please share with the rest of the gang here on this forum.

Free is a very good price. But no way I can eat just one. At some point I will be stuffing my face with a half dozen. Fantastic.
