The Wunderdog
Game: St. Louis at Houston (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Houston -184

For Houston it was a longtime coming, as they broke their 10-game losing streak in a big way by scoring 10 runs. The offense dug in for 16 hits and has finally awakened. They send Roy Oswalt to the mound in an effort to make it two straight. Houston has now lost three straight Oswalt starts and since he has been here they have never lost four in a row while he has been on the mound. He will face the 29th ranked teams in runs scored at 3.8 per game. Adam Wainwright has pitched to a 5.58 ERA, and is clearly in a mismatch situation tonight.

Big Al McMordie

Tigers at Indians
Prediction: 'Under'
It may be premature and he's definitely a longshot, but there has been at least some Cy Young talk surrounding 23-year-old Cleveland right-handed starter Fausto Carmona. Carmona seems to be getting better with each start and he has great stuff, which has been described as 'nasty' on more than one occasion. With an ERA of 2.89, Carmona (6-1) is, with apologies to all the C.C. Sabathia fans out there, perhaps the most consistent Tribe starter right now. His last start was this exact same matchup - versus the Tigers and lefthander Mike Maroth (5-4, 5.04 ERA). That game only went a 'total' of eight runs, and this time the Tigers may be without two of their regular starters in the lineup - shortstop Carlos Guillen (groin) and third baseman Brandon Inge (toe) and both are listed as doubtful. These two teams have scored a total of nine or fewer runs in six of the last eight games they've played against each other and the 'under' is 10-1 in Maroth's last 11 starts against Cleveland. Take the 'under'.

Dennis Macklin
MLB Minnesota vs. Oakland

Take Under

Kevin Slowey is the twins top`pespect in AAA and sports 6-2 record with nasty 1.54 ERA at AAA Rochester. He knows where the plate is as evidenced by his 5/57 BB/K ratio. Joe Kennedy has to be shaking his head at 1-4 despite 3.19 ERA. He´s 0-1 with 2.16 ERA in four homestarts this year. The light hitting A´s (.240 at home) are 16-6 under at home, 22-7 under vs righties, and 18-4 under off a win. Slowey is reported to be a stud and barring first out jitters, runs should be hard to come by from both teams. Play the UNDER

Marc Lawrence
Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers

Reason: LA Dodgers w/Wolf over Pittsburgh with Duke:
Dodgers send southpaw Randy Wolf to the hill in Pittsburgh knowing he is in fine current form and 6-1 in his career team starts against the Pirates (2-0 in this park). With Pittsburgh's Zach Duke in struggling KW form with more walks than strikeouts in his last three starts, look for the Dodgers to come up big tonight.

HONDO LEADS WITH CHIEN

June 1, 2007 -- The Tigers cost Hondo some scratch last night as Zoolander seemed to be posing more than pitching against the Native Americans, leaving Mr. Aitch with a reduced wad of 255 northrups.

Tonight, he'll look for a 'W' with Wang over Wake field, that knucklehead. Ten units on the Yankees.

15 Dime –

METS (With Maine as listed pitcher)
Take the Mets tonight at home over the Diamondbacks.
The Mets have owned the Diamondbacks going back to the 2005 season, going 15-2, including 4-1 at Shea.
John Maine will start for New York and the right-hander is having a fine season so far, going 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 10 games. He has given up three earned runs or less in nine out of his 10 starts this year.
Brandon Webb will start for the D-Backs and he’s had little success against the Mets, going 1-6 in eight career games. He hasn’t received any run support in those starts and I expect the Snakes offense to be stymied again tonight in the Big Apple.
The Mets have won five of their last six overall and 10 of their last 14 at home.
Chalk up another win in that streak as the Mets get it done tonight at home over the Diamondbacks.

5 Dime –

DODGERS (With Wolf and Duke as listed pitchers)
Lay the juice with the Dodgers tonight on the road over the Pirates.
Zach Duke will start for the Bucs and he’s been struggling big time this year. The left-hander has been getting lit up and now the Pirates coaching staff is tinkering with his delivery in an attempt to get him back to his rookie form, when he was 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA.
Messing with a pitcher’s head at this time of the year doesn’t bode well for the Bucs tonight. Duke is 2-5 on the year with a 5.55 ERA. What’s more, his WHIP is an astronomical 1.67. He’s also been bad against the Dodgers in his career, going 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA in three starts.
Left-hander Randy Wolf will start for the Dodgers and he’s been far more successful than Duke this year, going 6-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 11 games. Wolf is 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA over his last five starts and is 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA in seven career games against the Bucs.
Lay the juice as the Dodgers grab the road win tonight over the Pirates.

CARDINALS (With Wainwright as listed pitcher)
Take the Cardinals tonight on the road over the Astros.
At first glance this looks like a major advantage for Houston tonight, with Roy Oswalt starting opposite Adam Wainwright.
But the Astros have dropped 10-straight games and Wainwright has had success against Houston this year.
The Cardinals right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts against Houston this year and he’s coming off a fine start his last time out even though he got the loss.
The Astros are huge favorites tonight because Oswalt is pitching, but there’s no way I’d lay this kind of juice on a team that’s lost 10 games in-a-row.
Take the Cards plus a big return tonight as Wainwright is every bit as capable of pitching a gem tonight as Oswalt.

DEVIL RAYS -1 ½ RUN LINE (With Bannister and Kazmir as listed pitchers)
Take Tampa Bay on the run line tonight at home over the reeling Royals.
Kansas City has lost seven straight games and it’s not like they’ve been one-run losses. The Royals have been outscored 54-13 during their skid and haven’t reached double digits in hits in any one of those losses.
The Royals have also lost 11 of their last 13 games played at Tropicana Field.
Tonight they’ll try to end both of those streaks against Tampa’s best pitcher, Scott Kazmir.
The Devil Rays left-hander is 3-2 with a 3.95 ERA on the year and I expect him to blow right through the Royals lineup.
Tampa Bay comes into this game having taken two of three from Detroit and their confidence should be sky high tonight.
Take the Devil Rays on the run line tonight as they win by at least two over the pitiful Royals.

Take "(957) SF Giants"

San Fran starter Matt Morris is healthy and having an excellent bounce-back season, at 5-2 with a 2.90 ERA. The Phillies are forced to go with retread Adam Eaton, who was a bad pickup. He's not at all suited for this park and has a 5.93 ERA, allowing 9 HRs in 59 innings! He's 3-5 in his career against the Giants and they've already smacked him once this season for 6 runs in 5 innings. Play the Giants!

Chris Jordan

500? METS
(LIST Maine and Webb)

John Maine needs tonight. And with stellar run support, he'll get tonight.

After all, Webb has yet to match his Cy Young form from a year ago, as we've seen him increase his walk rate, and get touched upon too many times over the first two months of the season. Now he comes in against a team that has owned him since 2005.

Webb is 0-4 in his last five against the Metropolitans, having given up 10 earned runs over 36 innings – which isn't exactly a shoddy haul, but again, he is 0-4 in those starts.

The Diamondbacks have won seven straight, I know this, but the Mets have won five of six and are hitting the ball well enough they'll be able to get to Webb early and give Maine the confidence he'll need on the hill tonight. Maine's loose arm should help him sink that deceptive fastball, while forcing hitters to chase that high fastball he'll throw yeast on from time to time. I also like his curve to keep Arizona off-balance, but the key will be getting his slider working, as it's much quicker and much more consistent.

100? DODGERS
(LIST Wolf and Duke)

Welcome to Pittsburgh, Olmedo Saenz. That's what the Dodgers are saying, as one of the game's best pinch hitters is 8-for-10 against Zach Duke, and batted .524 against the Bucs last season.

This season, he's already 2-for-6 with a home run and a double. It's not as if we can bank this play on the Saenz alone, but when you have a player who is 16-for-29 in a specific ballpark, including five home runs, you have to take notice and assume you're in a good position to get your pitcher run support.

Enter Randy Wolf, who was solid last Sunday, holding the Cubbies scoreless through six thanks to that compact delivery that can be deceptive and creates a sneaky fastball. Wolf, who is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA against Pitt this season, is 6-3 on the year and has that looping curve to keep batters off-balance. The Pirates have been streaky, but against quality pitching, the runs are hard to come by. Duke is simply falling short with the right angles on his pitches, and that won't bode well against a team that has dominated him in his short career. Duke is 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA.

100? GIANTS
(LIST Morris and Eaton)

Let me get this out of the way, a quick disclaimer if you will: the Giants haven't won a game in the City of Brotherly Love since 2004, when they swept the Phillies at home. Let me add this now: I don't care!

Matt Morris is pitching well, and he showed tenacity in providing everything needed to nab the win in his last start; the fact he couldn't get any run or defensive support is not his fault. He is still 5-2 on the year, with a 2.90 ERA, and will be looking to duplicate his success against the Phils. Earlier this season he gave up just two earned runs in a seven-inning effort. And in his last two against the Phils, he's tossed 13 innings and surrendered just four earned runs.

Meanwhile, we oppose Adam Eaton, who has tanked in his last four against the Giants, giving up 19 earned runs over 20 innings. Let's take the money in this one and roll with Frisco here

At 10:05pm our selection is on the Minnesota Twins and the Oakland Athletics 'under' the total. After reaching a low point in the season about a week ago (May 21 to be exact) when the Twins were a dismal 20-24, they have now turned things around going into June, having won seven of their last eight games. And, after making everybody think that the future of their rotation was Matt Garza, the Twins are now promoting 23 year old righthander Kevin Slowey ahead of Garza, who remains in AAA and is apparently not happy about it. But Slowey is the real deal and deserves this call-up. His numbers in AAA were dominating and he has nothing left to prove there. And with Minnesota needing a replacement for Ramon Ortiz, Slowey's time is now. Slowey and Garza are both pitching for AAA Rochester, but Slowey has a better won-loss record, a better ERA, more strikeouts, and fewer walks. In fact, Slowey only has 5 free passes in over 64 innings of work, a number that is quite amazing. If he can come even close to this type of control and power with the big club, then he may stick around for a long time to come. This is also a great first assignment, to face a struggling A's team in a pitcher's park. And should the Twins not want to leave the youngster out there for too many innings, he can be confident knowing that he has one of the league's best bullpens to back him up. Joe Kennedy will get the start for the A's and his WHIP and ERA are respectable (1.37 WHIP and 3.62 ERA). Take the 'under'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

N.Y. Yankees (22-29) at Boston (36-16)
The Yankees and Red Sox get together for the fourth time already this season when they kick off a three-game weekend series at Fenway Park. New York’s Chien-Ming Wang (3-4, 4.12) is scheduled to oppose Tim Wakefield (5-5, 3.36) for the second time in the last two weeks.
Boston has defeated the Yankees in six of nine meetings this season, including winning all three played at Fenway. The A.L. East-leading Red Sox come into this with a 13½-game lead over their hated rivals.
Although the Red Sox had a five-game winning streak snapped in Wednesday’s 8-4 home loss to the Indians, they’re still on a 24-9 tear and haven’t lost consecutive games during that 33-game stretch, which goes back to April 23-24. Also, Boston is 9-3 in its last 12 at Fenway Park.
New York snapped a five-game slide with Wednesday’s 10-5 win at Toronto. Still, Joe Torre’s club remains mired in slumps of 6-13 overall and 4-8 away from the Bronx. Additionally, the Yankees are 0-9 on Fridays this season and 1-7 in divisional road games.
Wang got the better of Wakefield back on May 21 at Yankee Stadium, giving up two runs in 6 1/3 innings in a 6-2 victory. Wakefield allowed all six runs on nine hits and five walks in five innings.
Wakefield is 9-15 with a 4.76 ERA in 44 games (27 starts) against the Yankees, including 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in two starts this season. Meanwhile, Wang is 3-4 with a 4.78 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) against the Red Sox, including 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA this year and 1-2 with a 6.08 ERA in four lifetime starts at Fenway Park.
Since opening the season with seven consecutive tremendous starts in which he allowed a total of nine earned runs, Wakefield has hit the skids, going 1-2 with a 7.11 ERA in his last three trips to the mound. His ERA has risen from 1.79 to 3.36 in those three outings.
Unlike his counterpart tonight, Wang has strung together th

THE SPORTS ADVISORS

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Arizona (32-23) at N.Y. Mets (34-18)

The Diamondbacks take their seven-game winning streak to Shea Stadium, where they will try once again to reverse their bad fortunes against the Mets. A couple of righthanders are set to duel in tonight’s series-opener, with Arizona’s Brandon Webb (4-3, 3.74 ERA) taking on John Maine (6-2, 2.79).
The DBacks, who were idle on Thursday, are fresh off a three-game sweep at Philadelphia, culminating with Wednesday’s 4-3 victory that established a season-high seven-game win streak. Arizona has won five consecutive road contests, but they’re just 2-15 in their last 17 games against the Mets going back to the 2005 season (1-3 this year). That includes a 1-4 record in New York.
The Mets, who defeated the Giants 4-2 on Thursday, have won five of their last six overall and 10 of their last 14 at home, and they continue to possess the best record in the National League.
Webb is coming off Saturday’s outstanding seven-inning effort against the Astros, as he allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight en route to a 5-4 win at home. The righthander is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA in six road starts, with the DBacks winning five of those six games.
Webb’s worst start of the season came against the Mets back on May 5, when he surrendered six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks over six innings, losing 6-2. For his career, Webb is just 1-6 against the Mets despite a stellar 2.59 ERA, including 1-1 with a microscopic 0.43 ERA in three starts at Shea Stadium (one earned run allowed in 21 innings).
Maine bounced back from his worst effort of the season (five runs, eight hits in five innings vs. the Yankees) and delivered a 7-2 win over the Marlins on Saturday. He gave up two runs on four hits in six innings, finishing with four walks and eight strikeouts. Take away the start against the Yankees, and the righthander has given up three earned runs

Bobby Maxwell

Plus money with the White Sox in this one and we're going to jump on them.
Javier Vazquez (2-3, 4.50 ERA) is on the hill for Chicago against Toronto's A.J. Burnett (5-4, 4.06).
I know Vazquez has struggled lately, with the White Sox losing his last five starts. But one of those losses was a stellar performance at Minnesota where he allowed one run on four hits through seven innings and the game ended up 7-4 for Minnesota.
Last time out for him in Toronto he was magnificent, giving up just one run on two hits over eight innings as the White Sox won 7-1.
Burnett has given up eight runs on nine hits in his last two outings, a loss in Minnesota and a win in Baltimore. He saw the White Sox twice last season and gave up a combined seven runs on 15 hits in 12 innings in a loss and a win.
We're playing Vazquez in this one as the Blue Jays really struggle against right-handed pitching at home, batting just .225 this season as opposed to .316 against southpaws.
Let's play the plus-money and go with Chicago in this one.

Prediction: Minnesota Twins

Reason: The Twins are sending Slowey to the mound to make his big league debut. Expect Slowey to keep the A's off balance tonight. The Twins have won 7 of their last 8 games. The A's are 4-6 in their last 10. Tonight they have Kennedy, 1-4 on the mound. Oakland 2-7 in his 9 starts this year and 3-13 in his last 16 starts. GAME: Minnesota Twins @ Oakland Athletics
Jun 1, 2007 10:05PM

SPORT: Major League Baseball Picks

PICK: Minnesota Twins

REASON FOR PICK: The good news in Minnesota isn't just the Twins winning eight of their last 11. It's Ramon Ortiz being taken out of the starting rotation.
Replacing Ortiz is rookie right-hander Kevin Slowey. Keep the name in mind because this kid is good. Does a 1.54 ERA in nine Triple A starts at Rochester interest you? How about a 57/5 strikeout to walk ratio in 64 1/3 innings? How about glowing recommendations?
Slowey is one of Minnesota's top prospects. Scouts say he has the poise of a veteran, throws four pitches, has a fastball in the 90-92 mph range and obviously has superior control. He and the Twins are worth a look here in an underdog role.
The Twins were off Thursday so they've had a day to adjust to West Coast time. They'll be energized for this game considering it something special with Slowey making his mound debut. Slowey will be cheered on by around 20 family members and friends.
Slowey comes to the Twins at a good time. The Twins are off a three-game sweep of the White Sox. Minnesota has scored at least four runs 12 straight times.
Expect that streak to continue because Joe Kennedy takes the mound for Oakland. The A's are 2-7 in Kennedy's nine starts this season. Kennedy is off his worst performance of the season, a loss at Baltimore last Saturday when he allowed seven runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Kennedy is 2-4 lifetime against the Twins with a 8.56 ERA. Kennedy has pitched better at home this season, but he is a mediocre talent with a lifetime 4.72 ERA. The Twins have won 75 percent of the time (22-7) when scoring at least four runs in a game this year.
The A's could have their projected starting outfield intact for the first time this season with Mark Kotsay expected to play, but they are still without their closer (Hudson Str

Take the Los Angeles Angels behind John Lackey (8-3, 2.36 era) over the Baltimore Orioles (Miguel Cabrera, 4-5, 4.78) in L.A. The Angels have won 11 of their last 14 and they have their ace on the mound at home. Lackey has gone into the eighth inning in two of his four straight wins, the last one against the Yankees, in which he gave up only five hits. Cabrera is a walk machine: he ranks second in the AL in walks. The Angels have an OK team on base percentage of .333, led by Vladimir Guerrero at .456 (he leads the league), but they’re one of the top base-stealing teams in the AL, too. This is so much crunching for a strong and surging team with a guy going Friday who’s had quality start after quality start and is quietly putting together a Cy Young season two months in.

PROPS Proposition 1 vs. Proposition 2
Take Proposition 1 Special
At this week’s Memorial Tournament, Take Tiger Woods (9-4), 1/6 unit: Nine appearances, three wins, six top-10s. Think he likes playing Jack’s tournament? Take Jim Furyk (16-1), 1/6 unit: Jack’s got the sloppy rake mandate in effect for the bunkers again this year, the rough is expected to be high and the course has been slightly lengthened. It tends to favor accuracy. Carl Petterson won last year;Zach Johnson was runner-up.) Furyk looked good last week, perhaps coming back to form. Absolutely painful to watch this guy play but he’s a good bet if he’s back on track (four rounds in the 60s last week). He’s also done well at Muirfield Village with 1 win and four top-10s in 11 appearances. Take Stuart Appleby (80-1), 1/6 unit: How is Appleby 80-1? Since 1999 he’s played the Memorial every year and hasn’t missed the cut. There was a T7 back in 2001. He didn’t win the Mercedes this year and hasn’t won at all yet, which is incentive right there because nobody wants to play the Mercedes more than Appleby. He’s got two top-10s this

MLB pick: BOSTON RED SOX +100 OVER New York Yankees

Analysis: Both teams saw streaks end on Wednesday, as the Red Sox had their 5-game winning streak snapped with an 8-4 home loss to Cleveland and the Yankees broke out of a 5-game slump with a 10-5 victory at Toronto. New York third baseman Alex Rodriquez was involved in more controversy in that game when he yelled at Toronto's Howie Clark during a popup in the ninth inning that turned into an RBI single. You can bet the Boston faithful will let A-Rod have it for that one and heckle him even more every time he steps up to the plate. The Yankees have won two straight games only once in their last 19 though and have not won on a Friday all season, going 0-9 in their last nine. New York DH Jason Giambi wasn't having a good year before being put on the disabled list with a foot injury, but he was hitting .345 against the Red Sox and will also be missed. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have enjoyed great success bouncing back from losses over the last five weeks, failing to drop two in a row since April 24th vs. Toronto and going 9-3 in their last 12 at home. Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis brings a career-high 22-game hitting streak into the game and is hitting .378 against the Yankees this year (14-for-37). That's not good news for New York starter Chien-Ming Wang (3-4, 4.13 ERA), who is 1-2 lifetime at Fenway Park with a 6.08 ERA. Boston starter Tim Wakefield (5-5, 3.36 ERA) has struggled against the Yankees - dropping seven of his last eight decisions against them - but the value of taking him and his teammates as a small home underdog in such a big rivalry game is just too hard to pass up.
