Ok, so I just want to get my facts straight. I'm also bored as hell:
In 2003, Riley resigns suddenly and turns the team over to Stan the Man Van Gundy. SVG takes them to the second round of the playoffs. Not bad considering it's his 1st head coaching gig and he got it like the week before the season starts.

Next season, Stan the Man takes them to game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. They lose to the Pistons.

All of a sudden Riley wants to coach again, kicks SVG out of the head coaching spot, and makes him a "consultant". Riley takes the glory and the championship. Then the team starts to suck, and all of a sudden Riley starts feeling his old age, takes time off during their sub-par season to recuperate, they don't do so well.

So at this point, Stan Van Gundy has literally come out of nowhere to steer this team to the playoffs and set them up for a championship. Riley dicks him over by taking over as head coach.
Now, Stan interviews for the Orlando job, accepts it, and Riley DEMANDS compensation since SVG is a "consultant" for the Heat and still under contract. Gets a 2nd round pick and future considerations.

All in all, not a big deal, but to me it seems like a dick move by Riley. Why can't you just let the guy go and wish him luck. Instead, he holds up contract negotiations and again, tries to dick over his former assistant.

I just don't get it. I hate Pat Riley.

Riley's loyalty is with the Heat. He got a second round pick which may be good for the Heat. Riley is doing what his job description calls for.

Riley wasn't going to seek compensation if he went to a team outside of the division, like the Kings

lets talk about rileys loyalty. is it the first time he QUIT on the team? or was it the second time he QUIT on them? or was it when he stabbed the laker coach in the back so he could get the laker job? or was it when he quit the knicks?
what was it, 20 years since he won a ring , until the NBA gave the heat a ring because they didn't want CUBAN to win it.

It's a perfectly fine business move.
But you see the same people in the NBA over and over again, it's generally not a great idea to stab other people in the back repeatedly.

There is such a thing as loyalty, demanding compensation was unnecessary and uncalled for. He should show some appreciation to the guy he ran out.

I'm tired of all the praise Riley gets, he couldn't get the Knicks past Jordan, gives up on them and puts Jeff Van Gundy in a bad situation. Jeff did a great job with that team, and did some good things with teams that shouldn't have made it deep in the playoffs.

Riley was classless and full of crap in what he did going back and forth as coach when he deemed fit. Ridiculous. He got the job done though last year with the championship and winning cures all! I agree he is a dick.

I was at the Apple Computer store a week ago..Van Gundy was in line in front of me to pick up an order..None of the girls working in the store had a clue who he was..The girl bought out the wrong parts for him from the stockroom..He went beserk and asked her what she was doing working there..He acted like a real ass hole and I lost all respect for the man..After he walked out of the store..I told the girls he was the ex-Heat coach..Fuck him!

I love Stan Van Gundy as a coach. Orlando is the biggest winner here, as they get SVG instead of Billy Donovan.

As for Pat Riley and SVG, there is a true story here behind the story that will most likely never become public knowledge.

Basketball is a business and like all businesses all decisions have to be made for the benefit of the business. Miami got a 2nd round pick (bid deal) when they could have received nothing.

He does not have mutiple rings with mutiple teams because he is a nice guy.

With Van Gundy at the helm, would the Heat have a ring?

there is at least some doubt that they would

He was an injured Dwayne Wade in Game 7 away from the NBA Finals.

No reason to think he wouldn't have gotten there the next year in the watered down Eastern Conference, and very well beaten the Mavs. I figured Wade would've gotten to the line the 500 times he did with SVG or Riley on the bench.

Spread, you can't say that shit and then not share. Woman.
