Sopranos Ends Abruptly, Fans Not Thrilled
(CBS4) MIAMI It was one of the most anticipated TV shows in a long time but it wasn't exactly the rub-out, knock-out, to die for ending fans had expected from "The Sopranos."
Executive producer David Chase cut to black just after Tony Soprano looked up at who-knows-what, while eating dinner with his family at a restaurant..
Some fans grabbed the remote and shouted at the TV, wondering if their TV’s had been rubbed out. Then they demanded to know whether the HBO series ends after eight-and-a-half years with Tony dead or alive.
South Florida Sopranos fan Cheryl Feinman told
CBS4’S Jorge Estevez she thought she missed something. “I was waiting. I couldn't believe it was over. I was like what happened?”
Other fans felt the same way. “My TV just went blank. I didn’t know what to think,” said Sopranos fan Gail Williams.
With millions expecting the cable classic to go out in blaze of mafia bullets, it ended in a way few if anyone expected and left fans with more questions than answers.
Sopranos fan Lino Rulli said “I devoted 7 years of my life and they don’t even close it for me. You got to be kidding me.”
But TV analysts say no one should really be all that surprised with the ending. The Sopranos creator David Chase has never been one to tie up loose ends during the 8 year run of the program and the decision to let Tony live is typical, even if some fans were disappointed.
“I want to see more violence. I want to see more people dead,” said Sopranos fan Matt Vastano.
South Florida fan Thomas Sanon-Jules didn’t mind the ending. He loved the anticipation. "That was the suspense. You see the guy looking at him and you see the guy walking into the restroom and the girl was parking the car so you don't know what was going to happen and all of the sudden the screen goes blank."
At a cast screening at HBO headquarters in New York and at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood Sunday night, stars of the show had nothing but praise for the program and their experiences.
Lorraine Bracco who played Dr. Jennifer Melfi told CBS 4 News, "I will miss my boys so much! I've loved them for a whole decade, it's been incredible."
"The personal experience that I'm taking away from this exceeds everything else. I've got friends for life," said Jamie Lynn Seigler who played Tony’s daughter Meadow Soprano.
Dominic Chianese, who played Uncle Junior said he felt audiences may be disappointed at the end at first and they may be left wanting more but he felt it was an ending he was happy with.
There were so many story lines left unresolved there's already speculation that we haven’t seen the last of James Gandolfini and the rest of his crew.
Can anyone say Hollywood big screen, here they come?
