if you make a decision on a frat from this message board you are a fool.

the whole point in "rush" is to pick and choose.

one fraternity at one school is a far cry from the same one at a different school.

you go to try them out first - meet the guys, figure your shit out.

please don't think you will be any better off if some guy had a great experience with such and such fraternity at such and such school in random town, USA and that will translate into the same for you.

if you make decision about who to pledge to from random people you will eventually find yourself fucked during week 3 when all those great things aren't coming true. if you want legit advice get it from someone who graduated - to be super honest...get it from a girl already in a house AT THE SCHOOL YOU ARE ATTENDING.

first off she will immediately analyze you and the first matching house she thinks of probably would be a good choice. if you act like a mute and mumble to her she will refer you to a particular house of similar guys -- if you actually have social skills and are well received you will probably get a similar suggestion.

your best bet is to rely on yourself and friends, people you live with.

good luck. its not a decision to take lightly if you plan on doing it for the long haul.

Random question, but I've never understood, what is the obsession in the US with "fraternities" and "sororities"? Nothing like that in any of the three countries I've studied/friends have studied in..

You would probably have to have the experience to have it logically talked out to you. Its about partying, then its about life, then its about friendship, girls, and later in life ... connections into the corporate world. And hey, life is all about connections...

I spent very little time at the "house" because I was a jock, but I was always there for a friendly poker game.

ah yes - the poor man's excuse. "buying friends" how far from the truth that actually turns out to be. but I do understand how that is an easy misperception to arrive at.

How is it a poor man's excuse? You pay to hang out with people and belong to a group. If you dont pay, then you are excluded.

Please elaborate, maybe I'm offbase here.

While this statement will piss many here off, I completely agree. Frats seemed like a "cult" to me. Who wants to be forced to associate and live with dudes that you may not choose as friends? One of my friends from the dorm freshman year ended up joining a frat mentioned above. Long story short, he turned into a tool.

Going further, living there is expensive, you're roped into a bunch of silly meetings and/or "community activiities", plus you will be forced to live under the "house rules". Why do that?

Finally and most importantly, most sorority gals are not all they are cracked up to be. At the school I went to, there was one house that was known to have hot chicks. The rest of the sorority gals that I knew were in generally in the 4-6 range (on a scale of 1-10).

Meet people in the dorms etc. and then move into a house with them. You can have more parties without all the bullshit strings and rules.

You summed it up pretty well actually. They are so pathetic too. They basically pour beer down girls throats' just so they can get laid.
