Washington +1.55 over TORONTO
Josh Towers is a –1.65 favorite here and that’s really all the information required to make this wager. If we made a list of the 150 (or thereabout) starters in this league and ranked them in order on who was the least qualified to be a –1.65 favorite, Towers would be in the top 3. Here’s a guy that has had one good year two seasons ago and because of that the Jays signed him to a hefty contract. If he were making a reasonable amount they would’ve released him long ago. Since the beginning of ‘06, Towers has four wins and 14 losses in his last 26 appearances. Over that time he’s been in the rotation, he’s been in the bullpen for long stretches as a mop-up man only and he’s been in the minors too. The league has hit .343 off him and this season he’s allowed nine jacks in 40 innings. He has no confidence and less talent. Micah Bowie is a very decent lefty that’s gaining more confidence with each outing. Since being inserted into the rotation on May 20 after five relief appearances, Bowie has started five games and has yet to allow more then three earned runs in any of them. The league is hitting just .213 off him and in two June starts the league is hitting just .135 off him. Micah Bowie has been around for a while but has never been able to get over the hump. However, he’s 32 years old, he does not get rattled or discouraged anymore and it looks like he’s finally found a home where he’s been given a real opportunity. Anyway, this choice is much more about playing against Josh Towers, a guy that should not be favored by this much against a minor league team, let alone at this level. Play: Washington +1.55 (Risking 2 units).
