This Gold Cup is set up for Mexico and the USA

This has been stated many times and this edition of the Gold Cup is a great example of this. The Gold Cup is a competition almost rigged for Mexico and the US to reach the final. Unfortunately, CONCACAF seems to think these countries need an extra hand when it comes to the Cup and the officials are willing to follow through with the orders from above.

The USA-Panama game was the first example on Saturday with a ref shading calls towards the US, and yesterdays Mexico - Costa Rica game was almost absurd.

I want to make one thing very obvious. I am very critical of the Costa Rican national team, I am by no means a homer and call things the way I see them. I am not making excuses for having lost yesterday, we lost because our team is lost, we dont have a solid game right now, our offense is horrendous with a couple forwards allergic to scoring any goals. Our offense is anemic and the defense is somewhat shaky. We lost, not because Mexico played better, but because they scored a goal. Anyone that watched that game also realized the Mexican team is about 35% of its potential right now.

Having said that, the referree for yesterdays game should be shot or his ref status should be revoked. My God, how many bad calls can one guy pull off in 90 minutes of play? Again, Im not making excuses but the first red card was a bit extreme and the same can be said for the second, heck even the third one as the play was mostly accidental and unfortunately it looked worse than it really was, if u see the replay, Blancos face wasnt even touched even though thats what he went down grabbing in pain, his face, ironically it wasnt touched. Constant Mexican fouls ignored by a ref who red carded another guy with a double yellow even though he only had 1 and took out a card and showed it to a guy and then looked up to see what card he had in his hand. Perhaps he caved in to the pressure of the majority Mexican crowd at Reliant Stadium or perhaps he caved in to the orders of CONCACAF to get Mexico thru.

Either one, the officiating was atrocious.

what you mean is "I am usually critical of the Costa Rican team because they usually suck, but this year was going to be different. I thought they would do well this year, but alas the same ole same ole for them. It can't be that they are again this bad so maybe the Gold Cup is fixed."

saying you are not being a homer here does not make you sound any less of a homer.

GO CANADA GO!

We are the only other team to ever win the GOLD CUP apart from Mexico and the US.

Just to let you guys know, this is Canada's best team in ages...quite possibly ever and I really think we will qualify for WC 2010.

That game was ridiculous. Costa Rica red carded to death. A very moral victory for the Ticos only losing 1-0 under those conditions.

Disagree with you. We are definitely now the third best country in CONCACAF and have started to prove that this Gold Cup. I remember the last time we tried to qualify for the WC 2006, our team was full of white guys who had been brought up in the system through rich parents. Now, we finally use the multiple multicultural options in this massive Country and we have some pretty damn sick players.

Also, there is a strong chance that Jonathan De Guzman (considered the 2nd best UNDER 20 player in the world) will choose to play for Canada, his home country, depending on what he sees in this Gold Cup. Right now he wants to play for Holland but his brother Julien (play for Deportivo in Spain) is on team Canada and has been a star for us in this tournament. They are both from Toronto and apparently Jonathan is really considering playing for Canada. With Dewayne DeRosario (one of the best MLS strikers) and Ali Gerba (4 goals in the Gold Cup) up front, we all of a sudden have one of our most promising teams in a long time.

We also have veterans like Paul Stalteri who has been playing in the Bundesliga and EPL the last 10+ years to help out in the back.

Canada has only ever been in the World Cup once...ever...but believe me when I say that this is by far our best looking team ever.

We just beat Costa Rica in convincing fashion in the opener of this tournament and absolutely demolished a Guetamala team that had lost to the US 1-0.

I did not watch the game but Im reading everywhere that Canada had a completely legitimate goal taken away from them last night in the 90th minute against the US.............

Anyone still not believe what I said? WVU? Care to comment?

I watched it but the broadcast was in Spanish so I could not make out what the issue was. Seemed like it was offsides or something. It did seem like a tough call to make.

got a link? I just think it is crazy to assume this is set up. The US and Mexico are by far the 2 best teams. I respect your posts and your judgement, but I also know how disappointed you are that this year's Costa Rican team is no better than everyone thought.

Slim, Canada got screwed over pretty good with an offside call in the final 30 seconds. They scored a goal only to have it taken away by some questionable reffing and then the game ends immediately. Many soccer fans and the players were absolutely irate yesterday and some still today as the replay clearly shows he was not offside after the US defender accidentally heads the ball to him. Ironically, it was the same Mexican ref that screwed over Canada in 2004 during World Cup Qualifying against Honduras. He is not well liked in Canada. All in all, it was a great tourney for this Canadian team, something to build off of for the next round of World Cup Qualifying

WVU, trust me, to call me a homer is ridiculous as you did in ur first post, Ive attacked this team harshly before. I dont think we're anywhere near Mexico at this stage or period in time, then again Mexico doesnt look like they amount to much at all either. The only team that has played very well this tournament is the US and they looked shaky against Guatemala but still, played well throughout. From what Im ready, the goal was legitimate, I think they're showing the game on here in a while so I'll try to watch it. This thing about accomodating these two teams has always been an issue with the Gold Cup, it seems as if the organizers are afraid of no one showing up to a Honduras - Canada final or something like it so its done for economic reasons.

The guy that reff'd the CR - Mexico game was not bad, he was ATROCIOUS. Even the Mexicans accepted it.

Here's a video recap of the game from the Canadian broadcast. Obviously the disallowed goal was an atrocious decision but I though Bocanegra could've easily been sent off for that challenge on DeGuzman. Not a 100% red card but I think thats a red more times than a yellow.

and no US and Mexico were not by far the 2 best teams in this tourney, the US was still the best team in this tourney, but not by that much. Mexico has played like crap most of this tourney and are very fortunate to be in the final. I don't think they would of beat Canada or Honduras had they met them in the Semi's. All in all, this was a pretty good tournament with a lot of close games, I think some of the Concacaf countries are starting to close the gap on US and Mexico who have to this point always been the 2 strongest teams of the region. 3rd and 4th is a definite tossup now between a handful of countries.

how the fuck is that not a red card? Same piece of shit refs that fucked us over against Honduras a few years back in WC 2006 qualifying.

"Canada has been robbed"

"It seems to happen time and time again"

I just saw the end of that video, thats ridiculous, not even a red shirt around the area where the ball was deflected, the commentators rather pissed off and with good reason.

That video all by itself validates this thread.

What a bunch of bullshit.
