OMAHA - It's not to say that nobody would have expected this when the Sun Devils traveled up to Corvallis back in mid-May and swept a three game series, but, well, nobody would have!

The national champs came out guns blazing on Saturday against Cal State Fullerton and hung on for a 3-2 victory in their return to Rosenblatt Stadium. Meanwhile, Arizona State hit three home runs, en route to a comeback 5-4 victory over UC Irvine to set up this all Pac-10 winner's bracket confrontation.
Oregon State (45-18) vs. Arizona State (49-13)--Monday June 18, 7pm Eastern

Probable Pitching Matchup:
Oregon State:
RHP Mike Stutes 10-4, 3.93 ERA, 20 GS, 121.1 IP, 101 H, 52 BB, 120 K, .227 BAA

Junior Mike Stutes has started the most games this season on the Beavers' staff, and has logged his fair share of innings. The Santa Clara transfer is coming off a brilliant performance against Michigan that clinched the Beavers' return ticket to Omaha.

Stutes went eight innings, giving up just three hits and two runs while walking one and striking out nine Wolverines.

When Stutes faced the Sun Devils this year, he gave up 10 hits and four runs in seven innings, but struck out nine batters. All in all, that's a pretty good performance against that powerful of a lineup.

Arizona State: LHP Josh Satow 13-3, 2.41 ERA, 19 GS, 130.2 IP, 111 H, 51 BB, 115 K, .233 BAA

Junior Josh Satow will take the hill for the Sun Devils, all 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds of him. The All-Pac-10 selection and All-American has been the leader of the pitching staff and was picked in the 28th round of this year's draft by the Seattle Mariners.

Satow has pitched pretty well in the postseason, especially in the Super Regional against Ole Miss. Satow went 7.2 innings giving up five hits and no runs while striking out three and walking four. The week before against Nebraska, he also picked up a win, going six innings, giving up 11 hits, seven runs (six earned) while striking out six.

The bottom line with Satow is that his performance wasn't that great against the Cornhuskers, but the final score of that game was 19-7. You can't blame him for going out there and throwing strikes in a lopsided affair. Head coach Pat Murphy knows that Satow is going to keep his Sun Devils in the game, and when you have the lineup that they do, that means just don't give up more than five runs and you're going to win.

Against Oregon State this year, Satow picked up his tenth win of the year by tossing eight innings of two-hit shutout baseball while striking out eight and walking only three.

Lineups:
Oregon State:
Looking up and down the lineup, they aren't going to strike fear into opposing pitching staffs, as they compare very favorably to Fullerton. The team is hitting .281 and has hit only 40 dingers.

Catcher Mitch Canham leads the team with a .322 average and is tied for the team lead in home runs with nine. Mike Lissman is hitting .317 with nine home runs and leads the team with 57 RBI. Jordan Lennerton is the only other hitter above the .300 plateau, and he's at .315 on the season.

The Beavers are a good stolen base threat, with 70 on the season, as Chris Hopkins leads the team with 15. He may be hitting just .255, but his on-base percentage is at .379 thanks to 33 walks.

Arizona State: We all know what these guys can do. They showed that to us on Saturday against UC Irvine, that they use power to win ballgames. Even when the big guns are quiet, they have so many guys that are capable of producing, it's really going to take one heck of a performance to keep this team down. Heck, Scott Gorgen of UC Irvine pitched great, giving up five runs, and he still picked up the loss. That's tough.

The Sun Devils are hitting .348 as a team. They look more like the ASU football team than the baseball team, but sophomore Brett Wallace leads the group with a .416 average, 16 home runs and 78 RBIs. Eric Sogard also has a .400 average, while four other guys have their averages above .350. How does any starting pitcher get any sleep before he faces them?

All-Time Series: Arizona State leads the all-time series, 34-16, and went 3-1 this year against the Beavers. The two teams met in Surprise, Ariz. back on Feb. 17, and OSU took that game, 12-4. But in a crucial series in Corvallis in mid-May, Arizona State completely stifled them, winning 4-3, 3-0 and 8-1.

The Beavers are hot at the right time, playing much better baseball than they did the last time they faced one another. The two teams have very similar records, with the only glaring difference being their conference record. ASU won the Pac-10 with a 19-5 mark, while OSU struggled to finish sixth with a 10-14 conference record.

The amazing thing is, Oregon State only lost four games this season so far against non-conference opponents. They are 35-4 against teams not from the Pac-10 after last night. Unfortunately for them, there's a team from the Pac-10 standing in their way of getting back to the championship series. We'll see tomorrow night if the champs look like they belong once again, or if it's time for ASU to make their run at a title. The winner is in great shape to advance to the series, but one has to remember that the Beavers lost their opening game of last year's CWS, and actually lost two games in Omaha, but still won the championship. That's why the loser of tomorrow's game, is far from out of it, but it wouldn't hurt to pick stay undefeated.
