Authorities say Betancourt was stopped Saturday for speeding and following too close on Highway 97.
Deputy Brian Hulke deployed his K-9 dog 'Benny,' who alerted him to the trunk area. A search revealed the marijuana in large bags in the trunk.
The estimated street value is $78,000.
The deputy and Benny had been on the job in Sherman County for less than a week prior to the stop.
Sherman County Sheriff Brad Lohrey reports that this is the largest amount of marijuana seized during a traffic stop in the history of the Sherman County Sheriff's office
