MLB Baltimore vs. San Diego

Take San Diego Padres

San Diego w/Wells over Baltimore Padres close out their series with the Orioles this afternoon behind David Wells, whose numbers a home have been dramatically better than on the road this season. That's confirmed by Wells' 2.95 ERA (with a 9.08 WHIP) in San Diego , as opposed to a 7.08 ERA (with a 17.05 WHIP) on the road. We also like the fact the big lefty has cashed in eight of his last ten team starts in June, and fourteen of his last eighteen starts on Thursdays. The numbers all add up in the Padres favor here today

Game: Baltimore at San Diego (3:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: San Diego +109

There is nothing like a win for the Birds this season. They finally broke a 9 game losing streak with a win yesterday. The Birds have been 18-10 this season after a win, and will have their best pitcher on the hill today in Eric Bedard. Bedard got off to a shaky start, but in his last 9 starts has not allowed more than 3 earned runs in any of them, and has pitched to a 2.25 ERA covering 60 innings of work. The Bird offense after scoring just 25 runs in 8 games, has caught fire, plating 13 runs in their last 2. David Wells has shown signs of aging, and has not been as effective as he has in the past. His ERA is on the cusp of 5, and in the NL with no DH, that is more like 5.5-6 in the AL. The Padres are just 5-8 in his starts, and Baltimore has done better against LHP than RHP. Birds win this one.

Ted Lilly has some noteworthy day/night splits this season. Lilly's seven nighttime starts show him at only 1-2, 5.70. But under the sun, the Cubs lefty has been awesome. In those seven starts, he's 4-2, 2.20. That bodes well for his go against Texas as these teams wrap up their series. So does the fact he's pitching against Vicente Padilla, who has arguably been the worst regular rotation member in all of baseball this season. Looks like another good spot to fade the pathetic Rangers, so I'll back Lilly and the Cubs here

Take "Under"

These may not be big-name pitchers, but these two guys are getting the job done. LA starter Chad Billingsley is 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA. He has 40 Ks in 35 innings! Toronto starter Shaun Marcum is off an 11 strikeout, 7 inning game (2 runs) and for the season has a 3.41 ERA. The Toronto offense has never faced Billingsley. The Blue Jays are 25-12 under the total at home! Play the Dodgers/Blue Jays under the total.

# Event Date: 6/21/2007 2:05:00 PM EST
# Sport: MLB
# Pick Selection: Rangers

At 2:05pm our complimentary selection is on the Texas Rangers over the Chicago Cubs. Rangers outfielder Sammy Sosa reached a rare milestone Wednesday night when he cracked his 600th career home run off of the Cubs' Jason Marquis. A couple of years ago steroid allegations were swirling around the veteran outfielder before he stopped playing, but now all seems to be forgiven upon a successful return albeit with a new team. Perhaps all that players like Mark McGwire and Juan Gonzalez need to do to fix their reputations is come out of retirement and set more milestones? But other than Sosa's remarkable comeback this year, not much else has gone right for Texas. Once again they have poor pitching (perhaps their worst pitching in years) and can't seem to get enough timely hitting to offset the problems. This afternoon, in the series finale against Sosa's former team, the Rangers will try and take 2 of 3 from the Cubs and will be relying on Vicente Padilla, who certainly could be a poster child for the Rangers' pitching woes. But there are several reasons to like Padilla and Texas tomorrow, not least of which is that he seems to pitch much better at home than on the road, and his opponent, lefty Ted Lilly is just the opposite. And despite having a poor ERA over his last 3 starts, Padilla's K to BB ratio has been outstanding (11:2). Also, Padilla's team has won 3 of his last 4 starts against the Cubs, and again the exact opposite is true of Lily (his teams have lost 3 of his last 4 vs. Texas). Finally, Texas is hitting a scorching .281 vs. lefties, so Sosa could very well begin his climb to #700 today. Take the Rangers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie

Lilly went 8 innings while allowing just 6 hits and 1 ER and he will have good success against this Texas line-up that has struggled against lefties. Padilla has an ERA of 10.66 over his last 3 starts and the Cubs are hitting the ball very well over their last 7 games.

We like a low scoring game here as San Diego starter David Wells has a 9 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio in his last 3 starts. Wells has allowed 14 runs total in his last 6 starts. Baltimore starter Eric Bedard has allowed 3 or less runs in 8 straight starts and he has an 8 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio in his last 3 starts. Play On 'Under' (Wells vs. Bedard)

Game: New York Yankees at Colorado Rockies
Jun 21 2007 3:05PM

Prediction: Colorado Rockies

Reason: Ai Simulator 3* graded play on the Rockies ? Just when you think the Yankees are back and that Boston may be in another epic race, the NYY go out west and lose 2 straight to the Rockies. What is really unbelievable is that the NYY starting lineup, that was batting over 300 for a 12 games span scored just 1 run in each of these two losses. Many times a team can reach unsustainable levels of strong and poor performance and will revert back to their norm. At least the NYY are fielding well, but that actually puts them into a poor role for today's game. NY YANKEES are 5-15 (-18.0 Units) against the money line in road games after 4 straight games where they committed no errors over the last 3 seasons. NY YANKEES are 1-7 (-7.8 Units) against the money line in road games in day games this season. COLORADO is 8-3 (+9.3 Units) against the money line against AL East opponents this season. COLORADO is 13-6 (+12.2 Units) against the money line after allowing 2 runs or less this season. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 60-42 and has made 45.6 units since 2001. Play on home underdogs with a money line of +125 or more with an on base percentage of .350 or better over their last 20 games, with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 3.00 the last 15 games. Tweaking this system to reflect home dogs with a ML of +125 to +175 inclusive we find a record of 55-35 and profits of 42.6 units since 2001.

*New research and updates to come this weekend in baseball and wnba. Article about why the research is being done will also be posted and emailed to all members.

I want to point out something. I think covers is shaving points.

I just think this is interesting and thought I would point this out. Look at this. I have released something like 50 wnba plays and over 90% of them have moved 1.5 points at least.

For example, the opening of the Phoenix total, whatever the result might not be is not 162.5 as they claim.

In fact, it opened up at 164.5 b/c I posted this somewhere around 6am this morning. This is a lie. The total they have posted is 2 points lower. Furthermore, they have a tendency if a dog were to win, they will shave the line more towards their way, especially during college basketball in order to show "late line movement" or reverse line-movement and give credence to that theory. All this talk about line movement that happens...I personally think line movement depends a lot on what the site reveals to you in line movement as the only true line movement can be seen on the actual betting sites and not from places such as covers or elsewhere as they simply cannot be trusted. When you give credence to false theories, people are betting on hunches of line movement rather than the game I think.

On top of all this, their wnba scores are incorrect during the in-games as they magically change near the end of the game. When it comes to wnba scores, there is only one site that can be trusted and that is wnba.com.

Notes on the short card:

Rangers are starting to pick up their bats and win some ballames. The Cubs have gone under 8 of their last 9 games. However, Padilla is 11-2-1 with respect to the over this year. The line seems a bit high for the best 2 of the best pitchers for both of these ballclubs at 10.5 with the yanks/rockies. Not a bad price with Bedard if you want to take a shot on the O's. I can't do that given that there wasn't too much evidence for Padres and Germano yet I still played it b/c of his past performances. It should be interesting to see if the new pitching change brings about new wins and consequently new overs - similar to the Nats when they finally started to get it together. So, the Rangers and the Orioles could be teams on the watch list to move up. The Toronto under looks interesting as the dodgers best prospect billingsly and marcum at home should make for a good game. Personally I don't think that King Felix should be favored by a 2:1 given how he is pitching and the Pirate kid is actually a solid pitcher.

1 play:

Yankees/Rockies Under 10.5

Clemens comes off a tough luck loss against the Mets and he pitched over a 100 pitches and looked good. Loepz is 3-0 with a 3.29 ERA at home and 2.90 ERA overall. This should be a great game and a pitcher's duel. I have this game at a total of 7 runs. The last 2 games in this series featuring Fracis/Pettitte yielded 7 runs and Fogg/Mussina yielded 4 runs. The Yankees lost both games. I still don't quite understand why the total is to be at 10.5 considering the Lopez has been the best arm for the Rockies of late and given Clemens is on the mound. In fact, most of this totals are 10 at home, yet this is 10.5. I guess it's given respect to the Yankees having a big day after back to back losses. However, the Rockies have won the last 5 games Lopez has started which makes them yet another live dog today. The under is 6-1 when the Yanks are on the road playing an interleague team with a winning record. The Rockies are playing great baseball as they better than expected in Boston as they beat Beckett and Schilling and defeated Sheilds at home and now they beat Mussina and Pettitte. Clemens will step up. So will Rodrigo I think as he has done so far this season. The under is 5-0 when clemens is favored by -150 to -200. Under is 8-2 when Clemens starts with a 5 day rest and the under is 8-0 when the Rockies are dogs of +150 to +200. Clemens is a hard throwing pitcher like Schilling and the Rockies can hit fast ball pitchers with the best of them, so if it does go over, it will be because of this reason. The under is 9-4 in interleague games with Reynolds behind the plate.

Just 1 play today, although I was tempted to take the 1.5 with the Pirates as Hernandez is not pitching well and was tempted to take the under with the dodger/blue jays. Lots of games to look from this weekend.

That's what I got gents -

good luck.

Chicago's Ted Lilly is an even 4-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 12 career outings against Texas. SLIGHT EDGE: UNDER

MLB Betting Notes

Thursday, June 21

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday’s MLB betting notes

Damon’s late cameos

Johnny Damon’s season has been hindered by what the New York Yankees term a mild abdominal strain that limits him when he swings the bat.

The Yankees have managed to keep him in the lineup by making him designated hitter for the past few weeks, but his appearances will be limited this week during two interleague series on the road.

Damon did not start Tuesday night against the Rockies but he did enter the game in the bottom of the seventh as a defensive replacement at first base.

The trend that sees Damon coming in late in games is expected to continue in tonight’s series finale against the Rockies and through this weekend’s series against the San Francisco Giants.

Damon is batting .255 with 4 home runs and 23 RBIs this season.

Fans packed a ‘mile high’ to see Yanks

All seats at Colorado's Coors Field are painted green except for one row in the third deck which represents a mile's distance above sea level. That ring of seats has been visible at every game this season, except for the two games against the Yankees this week.

The arrival of the Bronx Bombers has seen the Colorado Rockies nearly double their average attendance, selling out the park with a crowd of 48,077.

For three games this week the Rockies can relive the club's infancy in the 1990s, when they led the majors in attendance in each of their first seven seasons. Since then, over the past seven seasons, they've finished no better than fourth place in the category.

With the Rockies’ Rodrigo Lopez (3-0, 2.90 ERA) facing veteran Roger Clemens (1-1, 3.65 ERA) on the mound, Thursday night’s series finale is expected to be another sellout. The Yankees are –178 favorites with the total set at 10½.

Colletti can’t catch a break

The L.A. Dodgers are like an old beat-up car at the moment; as soon as you fix one problem, something else goes terribly wrong. General manager Tony Colletti has learned that the hard way in the past few weeks.

Colletti addressed the Dodgers' struggling offense last week – they are 12th in the NL with a .261 batting average – by replacing hitting coach Eddie Murray with Bill Mueller.

Then L.A. began this week by losing two pitchers to injury, starter Jason Schmidt (1-4, 6.31 ERA) and reliever Yhency Brazoban. Both will undergo shoulder surgery and could be out for the season.

"It's part of the game and part of the way it goes," Colletti told MLB.com. "All we can do is be as prepared to overcome it as we can. That was the thought process as we put together the pitching staff, to have as much depth as we can."

At least the offense has shown signs of improvement. Los Angeles hammered home 10 runs in Tuesday night’s win against Toronto. The Dodgers are +122 underdogs to take Thursday’s series finale at Toronto, with Chad Billingsley (4-0, 3.09 ERA) on the mound.

First-inning woes

The Seattle Mariners are the holders of an unwanted record; they rank last in baseball in the number of runs given up in the first inning, with 68.

The Mariners have allowed their opposition to score in the first in four of their last five games. In the past three games alone they have given up a total of 8 runs in the first, contributing to a six-game losing streak.

After a whopping 11 games on the road, even a return to Safeco Field on Tuesday failed to stop the rot. Seattle gave up two runs in the first inning to Pittsburgh and went on to lose 5-3.

Felix Hernandez (3-4, 4.58 ERA) goes to the mound with Seattle as –180 favorites in the final game of the Pirates series. Mariners fans will be praying he can get through the first inning unscathed.

Ump and over

The over looks an attractive bet for Thursday's series finale between the San Diego Padres and the Baltimore Orioles after a 12-6 blowout win for San Diego on Tuesday.

The umpire for Thursday’s game makes an over bet even more enticing. In Bruce Froemming’s last seven games behind home plate the over is 5-2. Also, in his last 13 games behind home plate with Baltimore playing, the over is 10-3.

The game features a pitching matchup between Erik Bedard (4-4, 3.64 ERA) and David Wells (3-4, 4.86 ERA). San Diego is –117 favorites with the total set 7½.

HOT

Shaun Marcum (Toronto Blue Jays) - Marcum has embraced his role since being moved into the Blue Jays starting rotation. The right-hander is 3-0 with a spectacular 2.38 ERA in seven starts this season and 4-2 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 20 overall appearances. Marcum is 1-1 with a solid 2.93 ERA and 1.08 WHIP at home and the Blue Jays are 4-1 in Marcum's last five starts at Rogers Centre. Oddsmakers list the Blue Jays as -133 home favorites against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

COLD

Vincente Padilla (Texas Rangers) - Things haven't been going well for Padilla. The right-hander is 3-8 with a lofty 6.57 ERA and 1.73 WHIP and He's 1-1 with a 10.66 ERA over his last three starts. The veteran is 3-4 with a 4.40 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Chicago Cubs and the Rangers are 2-11 in Padilla's last 13 starts as an underdog. Oddsmakers list Texas as a +116 home underdog.

Pittsburgh at Seattle

The Mariners ended their six-game losing streak last night (7-0) thanks to Jeff Weaver's four-hitter. Seattle will hope for similar fortunes from Felix Hernandez today. But the Mariner phenom gave up a career-worst 12 hits in six innings of a 5-1 loss against Houston in his last start and is 0-2 with a 6.85 ERA in his last four starts. Even against Pittsburgh, the Mariners look like a shaky favorite (-185) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Pirates favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (+185). Chicago Cubs at Texas Rangers (+116, 10 ½)

The Cubs traded their starting catcher, Michael Barrett, after public altercations with pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Rich Hill. Chicago sent Barrett to San Diego for a backup catcher (Rob Bowen) and a minor leaguer.

“We’re happy to have Rob,” Cubs’ general manager Jim Hendry told the Chicago Sun Times. “He’s a guy that our scouts have liked for a long time, even way back in his amateur days in Indiana.”

The 26-year-old may be an improvement defensively, but certainly not at the dish. Entering this season, Bowen was a career .206 hitter, whereas Barrett is known for his bat.

“We felt (Barrett) was well on his way to becoming a terrific player,” Hendry said. “This year he’s had a little tougher time defensively. A lot of it was probably from trying too hard. And maybe some of that was from being in the last year of his deal.”

Sammy Sosa clubbed his 600th home run last night, effectively making his comeback a mild success.

Los Angeles at Toronto Blue Jays (-129, 9)

The boo birds were out in Toronto on Tuesday night after mishaps in the outfield and strikeouts out the plate resulted in a 10-1 loss.

Toronto designated hitter Frank Thomas took the constructive criticism seriously by knocking out a gland slam during Wednesday’s 12-1 win.

“Last night was rock bottom,” Thomas told the Toronto Sun yesterday. “To get booed by the home crowd like that last night, I took that personally. But I’m in a new place and I haven’t played the way I’m capable so far.”

Jason Schmidt was originally scheduled to start today, but he won’t be pitching again this year. The former San Francisco Giants ace will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his pitching shoulder.

“With all due respect, he hasn’t thrown well,” Dodgers GM Ned Colletti told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s not as if he was on his way to a Cy Young season and suddenly you lost him.”

Regardless, this is a downer for Dodger Blue faithful. The team spent $47 million on Schmidt in the offseason and the injury limits Colletti’s ability to trade an arm for a bat.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Seattle Mariners (-191, 9)

Mediocre pitchers have a habit of looking as unhittable against the Pirates as Henry Rowengartner in Rookie of the Year. Seattle’s Jeff Weaver was the latest second-rate pitcher to baffle the Pittsburgh bats. The righty came into the contest 0-6 with an ERA over 10, but he pitched a complete game shutout last night.

“Yeah, we’ve had a few guys with numbers like that,” Pirates left fielder Jason Bay told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“Nobody likes to be the team it happens to,” shortstop Jack Wilson said. “But it doesn’t matter what you do to that point when you perform like that. If you’re a .100 hitter and you go 3-for-4, well, you were a .750 hitter that day. Weaver’s ERA was 0.00 tonight, and that’s what counts tonight.”

Kameron Loe, Kip Wells, Kyle Davies, Kyle Lohse and Matt Chico have all had close to their best start this season against Pittsburgh.

Your pick will be graded at: 10.5 Pinnacle
EXPERT: Scott Rickenbach

TITLE: IL Total of the Month - 70% run
REASON FOR PICK: 2* (Top Play) OVER the total in Colorado vs NY Yankees @ 3:05 ET - Lopez vs Clemens - These two pitchers have a combined ERA of 6.55 so far this season. Each of the first two games in this series have stayed under the total. The Yankees potent lineup has managed just one run in each of the first two games. Having noted all of the above the odds maker posted a fat 10.5 total on this Thursday afternoon affair. Is this some kind of mistake? Of course not! This game should fly over the total and now let's get to the reasons why:
The weather in Denver is going to be very warm this afternoon. With temperatures expected near 90 degrees the ball should carry very, very well this afternoon at Coors Field. That is signficant because we do expect both of these pitchers to give up a lot of contact. As noted above the ERAs of Roger Clemens and Rodrigo Lopez are quite impressive even though they each have limited activity so far this season. We see key reasons that both ERAs will be on the rise this afternoon.

A big key today is that each of these pitchers is a veteran hurler who has spent time in both leagues. As such, they are facing plenty of hitters today that have experience against them even though this is an Interleague match-up. That is a key factor in helping an IL game find it's way over the total.

Clemens pitched very well in his start against the Mets on Friday. However, his first two starts have come at home and they included an outing against a Pirates team that is not exactly a powerhouse lineup at the plate. As for the Mets he faced them when they were mired in a slump. He also threw 108 pitches in each start and we feel that may wear on him some today as he pitches on a very warm afternoon in Denver. Today he is facing a Rockies team that has been one of the major's hottest clubs over the last month. They're a major league-best 19-7 since May 22nd. Most recently, the offense has led the way as the Rockies have averaged nearly 8 runs per game in winning 6 of their last 7.

The Yankees sticks were red hot coming into this series and we see a huge bounce back on tap for today after scoring just one run in each of the first two games of this series. The Bronx Bombers will tee off on a pitcher they have seen plenty of throughout his career. Lopez spent the last five years in Baltimore before coming to Colorado. With the Orioles, a Yankees division rival, Lopez faced the Pinstripes on many occasions. He did not fare well! Lopez has a career ERA of over 6.00 against the Yankees. They have plenty of hitters who have hit him well throughout his tenure with the O's. Note that, despite his impressive ERA on the season, Lopez has been hit harder since he came off of the disabled list in late May. In his four outings since coming off of the DL, Lopez has allowed 28 hits in 23.1 innings of work.

Lopez has had success by keeping the ball down and avoiding the big innings in his starts this season. However, Lopez has allowed three homers in his last three home starts and the Yankees familiarity with him is going to be an issue today. Note that throughout his career Lopez has been hit harder and given up more homers in his daytime outings. We get great line value on this total here today because Lopez has such a low ERA on the season. Trust us, his stuff is not that good. This will be the toughest lineup he's faced all season and, despite his low ERA at home, he has been hit at a .302 clip at Coors Field this season. Behind him is one of the worst bullpens in all of baseball and this game should fly over the total by the middle innings! Play OVER the total in Colorado as a Top Play selection.

The J. Straley Group, John Fina, Wild Bill, Vegas Sports Picks, Karl Garrett, and Cappers Access are all on the DODGERS!

I want to take Toronto because of Ness, but their are actually more cappers on the Dodgers.

Ness lost his first pick, hopefully Toronto will come through.
quite a few cappers on the under for this game as well
