Pittsburgh +1.47 over L.A. ANGELS
It’s not customary for us to go against hot teams but the Angels may show up in body only today and mentally take this day off. They come in having been the hottest team in the majors for the past month or so and this is the last game of inter-league play. Tomorrow they get back to playing the AL and chances are good that many regulars will get some time off. Gary Matthews and Casey Kotchman are almost guaranteed to be sitting. Then we have Bartolo Colon going again and he hasn’t fooled anyone all season. Colon is an overweight, out-of-shape, worn out pitcher that hasn’t been the same since returning from surgery. Over his last five starts he’s 1-3 with a 9.79 ERA. In three June starts the league is hitting .362 off him and his ERA is 8.44. Colon is getting worse, not better and those last three starts all came against National League teams. To give you an idea of how reliable Tom Gorzelanny is, he comes in with a 3.01 ERA in 99 innings of work and on the road he’s 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA. He’s already won seven games for the Pirates and it’s a rare day when he does not give them a quality start. Anyway, this choice is more about playing against Colon and a Angels team that might show very little interest today. Play: Pittsburgh +1.47 (Risking 2 units).

Chicago (NL) +1.09 over CHICAGO (AL) (1:05 PM)
Some things remain the same for a long time and the South Side is still not interested, they’re still not hitting, they’re still losing games at an alarming pace and the fact that they’re the chalk here is ludicrous. Jose Contreras has a 6.75 ERA over his last three and at home this season his ERA is 6.03. Meanwhile, the Cubs are 3-0 in Sean Marshall’s last three starts. Overall Marshall has started six games and is 3-2 with a 2.84 ERA. In 38 innings he’s struck out 31 and walked just 10. He’s allowed two runs or less in five of those six starts and the game that he allowed more was played in that landmine in Texas. When the Mariners were tearing it up Sean Marshall threw an eight-inning gem against them on June 13. Lastly, the Cubbies are 5-12 against southpaws and chances are great they’ll be 5-13 when this one is in the books. Play: Chicago Cubs +1.09 (Risking 2 units).

MILWAUKEE –1½ +1.15 over Kansas City
Yovani Gallardo was near flawless in his major league debut before running out of gas in the seventh inning against the Giants last Saturday. Gallardo carried a shutout into the seventh inning before back-to-back homers and subsequently getting pulled. If his first game in the majors in any indication at all then Gallardo is most definitely ready for prime time. He throws strikes, he goes right after hitters and he only gave up four hits in those six-plus innings. Keep your eye on this talented right-hander. The Brewers are hot at the moment with five straight wins and most of them have been in very convincing fashion. In addition, the Brewers are 13-3 at home vs lefties and they’ll face one of the most hittable southpaws in the business in Odalis Perez. Perez has been tagged for 103 hits in 78.2 innings and in four June starts the opposition hit a hefty .373 off him. That includes two starts against the offensively challenged Cardinals. This is a mismatch all the way around and with that in mind we’ll gladly lay the runs here with a small take-back. See ya at the cashier’s booth about 4:30 PM. Play: Milwaukee –1½ +1.15 (Risking 2 units).
