Watching replay of Red Sox game from Sat. night and cannot believe they reversed 2 calls against the Red Sox. One was a trap by Manny that was originally called a catch, and the other was a foul ball that was changed to a home run. Both calls went against the Red Sox. Both calls were ultimately correct, but the umps did not even look at a replay! Am I missing something or have things changed dramatically in baseball in regard to umps and reversing calls? Do they huddle up now and actually try to get it right? What happened to the completely arrogant method of umping? Also, if they are going to huddle up, why not bring in replay?

If an ump has a better view of a play and is certain of what he saw, he'll call a conference.

They got it right both times though, as you pointed out. The confrence is hardly ever wrong it seems.

The Red Sox have no reason to complain because in the series against the Yanks in 04, they also reversed 2 calls. (And were made correctly after confrence)

I dont see what is wrong with it?!

If the conference takes more than 10 seconds, then nobody saw it any better than the one who made the call, and at that point it's just a vote amongst the umps. And that's not how it's supposed to work. Make the call and live with it.

Is that really a rule?

I don't know what the rule book says about asking for help. It was just my opinion that if they meet for more than a few seconds than no one had a definitive call.

From what I heard on the "Center, the guy who made both calls was a vacation fill-in up from the minors. Probably for the last time, I"m sure.
