I was just curious. I have both a bachelors and masters degree in biology. I teach and coach high school football/track. I love my job, but was also looking into maybe starting sometype of venture on my own....

Question:::: If u could start a legit business that you think would make pretty good profits, what would you seriously consider? Something maybe you have thought about doing, but just never could get your ducks lines up on it....etc.

I am seriously considering being an independent retailer of an italian ice company. Basically, i would go around and get accounts (i.e. from high schools, little league parks, pop warner, softball fields, etc). Once u have an account set up with that school or park, no one else can sell your brand of italian ice cream in that territory. In my area, there is no one that does this. I probably wouldnt get rich doing it, but could bring in some money over the course of friday nights through sunday afternoons.

Would love to hear some suggestions/opinions.

thanks

Well, saying there is alot of experience and intelligence on this board, i dont see why not.

Out of all the crap that is asked on this forum, u are gonna ask me why i posted this here? Wow, that in itself, is comical.

probably the same reason 95% of the people that post and read on this "gambling forum" and they don't even gamble. I have never understood that but alot of people on here don't even bet.

Not a slam Dante but The RX has changed dramatically over the years. There are just as many moneymaking threads out there as anything. Not sure if that s good or bad but just a fact.

I would say (and I could be wrong) the same exact reason you and others post on a "gambling forum" and you are not gambling because these are the same kind of people you feel most comfortable asscoaiting with.

There are hundreds of forums out there for people to get involved in but most like something like the RX because of the respect and knowledge of the posters on here. I have said it before but there is a certain comfortable level on here for whatever reason.

This site is changing more to an "entrepenuer" type forum lately. I think one of the reasons for this is most gamblers want to win money betting for a side income but because it is too hard they think it would be easier to direct their time and foucus on other moneymaking ventures as it takes a risk taker/entrepenuer spirit to beat gambling (IMO).

I think the best way you can answer your question is to ask yourself why you post on here and not gamble and I think you and the orginial poster would have very similiar answers. Thought I would throw that in because I feel most on here would ask me the same questions from all my threads started in the past and that is my answer:thumbsup:

I can't see soccer moms and little league coaches hauling their kids to some fancy italian ice cream shop.

why pay for some franchise fee when you don't have to? call up a local dairy, cut a deal with them to supply you ice cream at a fair price and start a stand... run it from memorial day to labor day. hire high school girls to run it. sell hot dogs too.

of course you gotta know something about the business and location is everything.

damn you're a teacher too? shit... every May you can start dropping hints to your students about summer jobs and your ass isn't working during the summer anyway so you'd have time to run it....

Sorry about the rant. Back to the question.

First off I love these type threads and so do others because they always have high involvement in them. I think these threads should be applauded more than anything as they keep things interesting around here and who knows maybe a few of us can make some extra money as that was most of our reason for coming here in the 1st place.

Here is my take:
I have asked this and questions similiar to this a dozen times on here in the past year. Some things I have learned is to read alot of books as there are a ton of ideas out there, just go to Amazon and type a few key words and check out how popular of a subject this is nowadays. Also do something you totally enjoy as I think the money will eventually come. My biggest mistake was I was always looking at things I had zero interest in and eventually it waned. That is why I have focused so extensively on betting because I love it and I treat like a business. Now I am getting into owning more race horses and some rental homes, I have passion for them. They make my heartbeat.

Here are some thoughts and ideas.

1) Sandwich shop- I think Subway is so overrated and a local wrap sandwich shop where you can taste the meat would blow the doors off the customers as they are mostly healthy sandwiches also.
2) Dog Poop Pick up services- They are poppin up all over, look into them. Should be able to make $45 an hour with little start up expenses.
3) Locksmith
4) Ticket Broker
5) Dog Day care
6) Real Estate investor
7) RE apprasier
8) bookie- offshore market lost alot of customers, run parlay cards
9) Work for a process server
10) Loan business-that has been talked about on here
11) Gamble- poker or bet sports, risky but what business isn't. Good hours. Flexibile
12) Self serve car wash or laundromat
13) get into selling vitamins or weightloss products- health consious country
14) mow lawns- hire some of your students

Those are just a few off the top of my head. Keep thinking of any ideas. This is what keeps life exciting and entertaing, new challenges. Good luck!!!

4) Ticket Broker (Me and brother are looking at this. What is the secret?)
5) Dog Day care (Condo isnt big enough. Dogs bite and ill punch them out)
6) Real Estate investor (Got to have startup $$. I dont have too much)
7) RE apprasier (Great idea...hmm. Do u know what's the protocol for this)
8) bookie- offshore market lost alot of customers, run parlay cards (i like)

I will add to Iceman's list.

#15 Vending Machines. I have always been interested in these things. For a machine to sit in 1 place and have people pour money into them for an item while you are at home doing whatever. Vending is not an easy business as I have learned the last 2 months. Location location location.

#16 A Dump Truck. I have a friend who lost his job about 4 years ago. On his way out he bought a used dump truck from the company. Just with his truck and a few connection he now does nothing but drive the truck to the site waits for it to get filled up and takes it away. He never even gets out of the truck. He makes mid to high 5 figures.

#17 The most important thing you need is CONFIDENCE in yourself and not listen to the naysayers. The naysayers are the people that are STUCK in a shit job that they don't like. Don't think that starting a business that you are going to be on easy street. You will be the hardest working person in the company as it should be. Remember employess are not invested in the company they are just there for a check. DON'T HIRE FRIENDS IF YOU CAN'T FIRE THEM.

i have many different things going on, in my store:

rent movies: i dont own any of the dvd's, im on a route, i get 50% of all rentals and am responsible for none of the movies....... i try and get them back (but you guys know how that goes)...... id hate to actually own the movies: i collect $1.25 for every rental that goes out...

tanning beds: good side money but i also only run these for the owner. i have a friend that owns a tanning salon..... he dropped off some beds and i run them, once again for 50% of the intake....... i dont have to change bulbs and i am not responsible for the up keep........ some pretty good looking chicks come in as well.....

pizza's: Buffet Style Pizza......... sort of a mini franchise..... good money in these, i sell about 200 weekly...... not that great and i could build this up..

the food is where the money is at but its also where the work is........ id do away with all of it, if i could........

no money in selling gas (at least not for me),,,,, i make about enough to run my vehicles weekly....

cigarettes: still good money here........ price is going up again next week. TN is adding $4.20 per carton (state tax)......... this means more of an investment on a weekly basis for me........

i wouldnt mind owning a strictly tobacco outlet........
