St. Louis +1.67 over NY METS
The Cardinals are a team we pretty much try and stay away from because they’re pathetic and Tony LaRussa is the most over-rated/manager coach in the history of all sports combined but when there’s good value attached to any team we’re always ready to step in. Adam Wainright’s numbers don’t look all that impressive but a close look reveals that he’s been tough as shoe leather over his past seven starts. In fact, Wainwright has allowed two runs or less in five of his last seven starts and has pitched seven full frames or better in four of those. He held the potent bats of the Phillies to just two runs in six innings in his last start. Overall, in those seven aforementioned starts, covering 46.1 innings, Wainright’s ERA was a very impressive 2.91. In addition, the Cardinals get two key members back for this game in catcher Yadier Molina and third baseman, Scott Rolen. Meanwhile, Orlando Hernandez is been a little shaky recently, having allowed 11 runs in 10.1 innings prior to his last start against the A’s. Hernandez is having a tremendous season but don’t expect him to be that dominating the rest of the way, as he’s a decent pitcher but he’s certainly not THAT good. Hernandez is still 42 years old and is coming off a 119-pitch performance. Anyway, there’s definite value on the visitor in this one and we’re on it. Play: St. Louis +1.67 (Risking 2 units).

BALTIMORE +1.65 over NY Yankees
At this price it’s worth gambling that the extremely talented Daniel Cabrera shows up as oppose to the unfocused and erratic Daniel Cabrera. There’s absolutely no denying that Cabrera has some of the nastiest stuff in the business and that 29 other teams would love to have him. We’re not going to go into his numbers because they’re not relevant. What is relevant is the tag on Cabrera and that he’s very capable of throwing a gem, period. Meanwhile, the Yanks continue to lose but the books and/or the public is still giving them way too much credit. In fact, the Yanks have lost seven of eight and it’s not like they’re playing the Red Sox, Angels or Brewers. They’re losing to teams like the Giants, Rockies and these Orioles. The bullpen is still a mess; the team is not scoring runs (21 in their last seven games) and frankly, there’s nothing at all to like about them as a -1.75 choice. Of course the Yanks can win here, however, once again they’re ridiculously overpriced and that’s good enough for us. Play: Baltimore +1.65 (Risking 2 units).

Toronto –1.08 over MINNESOTA (1:10 PM)
Very tempting to lay the 1½ runs and take-back 1.50 but we’ll play it the safer way by calling the Jays outright. The Blue Jays are on a roll and it’s no fluke. This invader is loaded with talent and can beat you in so many different ways. Their bullpen is second to nobody and defensively they’re simply juggernauts. John McDonald might be the smoothest and most gifted SS to come around in years and he exudes confidence. McDonald turns infield base hits into routine outs and double plays. The Jays get another boost in the arm today, as A.J. Burnett returns to the rotation after missing a couple of weeks. In 90 innings of work the league is hitting just .219 off him. In seven of his last eight starts he’s allowed three runs or less. He’s also struck out 100 batters in 90 innings and all that should bode well against an offensively challenged Twins team that scratches and claws for every run they get. Furthermore, Carlos Silva is among the most hittable pitchers in the game. He’s struck out just 38 batters in 93 innings and the league is hitting .290 off him. In Silva’s career, covering 835 innings, the opposition hit .301 off him. The Jays have a big edge everywhere and for a team playing as good as they are this is a very cheap lay. Play: Toronto –1.08 (Risking 2.16 units to win 2).
