Thinking about taking 2 weeks in the fall and going to Italy and France with my girl.

I am wondering if anyone has recommendations on parts of Italy to visit. We are not so much into traditional sight seeing but instead like to absorb the flavor of the country and relax.

Suggestions welcome.

My wife and I went to Italy and Spain last year. I would recommend Barcelona in a second if you would consider Spain instead of France. However, I have never been to France so can't comment at all.

Regarding Italy, we spent 2 days in Milan and I wouldn't recommend more than that in Milan. It was big, dirty, humid and hot. Other than the Duomo (Catholic Cathedral in Milan which is amazing) and the Last Supper painting, there wasn't much that interested us. From what I have heard, that seems to be the concensus on Milan as well. However, you will be able to "save" $400 on a Prada bag if your girl desires one.

We also spent about 5 days in the Italian Riviera staying in Santa Margherita Ligure and visiting Portofino and the Cinque Terre. I absolutely loved that area, super beautiful, scenic and one of the most peaceful, calm, relazing and serene places you will ever visit. I wouldn't recommend staying in Portofino as it is VERY small. It is, however, very close to SML (which is actually closer to the trains and more accessible) and definitely worth visiting for a day (you can literally see everything in half a day). Cinque Terre is beautiful and scenic as well.

here is the wiki entry on it to explain it more. It is basically 5 towns (hence, the name) located right on the water, all very small that has a walking/hiking path from town to town, you can walk from the northern to the southern most town in an afternoon, I would recommend walking south to north (easier walk).

SML is like a small Santa Barbara if you have ever been there. Nice shops and restaurants, people are great, very mellow. there isn't a ton to do but if you want to relax it is 100% recommended. If you are looking to rage, look somewhere else.

I have also had a bunch of friends who visited the Amalfi Coast area and all absolutely raved about it. From what I understand, it is pretty similar to the CT and SML.

I am in Italy August 29 through September 8th. I am flying into Naples, where my uncle lives on Wednesday, taking a train to Rome Friday night and then a train to Florence Saturday morning where I rented a villa in the middle of Tuscany for a week. Naples to Florence is about 4 hours and Rome is right in the middle so it makes sense to grab a night there too.

I've been to Italy many times.

You must go to:

Rome
Venice
Florence

Venice is a one of a kind place. There are no roads, cars, buses in
the city. All canals, so it is peaceful, romantic, and scenice.

Rome is so full of history and sites, you could spend weeks there
and not see everything.

Yeah can't wait. Rented a 4 bed 4 bath villa with three friends from school and their wives in the middle of the tuscany countryside. The nearest village for food and wine etc is six miles away.

First time in Italy, you must see Venice, Rome and Florence. Even if you are not the typical tourist type, going to Italy and not seeing Venice, or the David, or the Duomo in Florence is a crime.

Other than that, get thee to the Cinque Terre! It's getting more touristy but it's still one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places in Europe in my opinion.

Tuscany is great! If you are into wine... you should rent a car and just drive around to the different vineyards up there. Florence is in Tuscany, so when you visit there... maybe spend a day out on the hills drinking some vino!

The only trip I do not reccomend is this one... unless you really want to get a photo of yourself holding it up. But there is NOTHING in pisa except for the tower... waste of time and money IMO

France and Greece - I'd be putting down Rhones, Amarones, Bordeauxs, Super Tuscans, etc., all day long.

Grog... I was in Florence for 4 months. The best place I went during my entire stay was a place called Villa San Michele. I went with some friends for drinks and dinner one night and we were all BLOWN away. It is up in the mountains that surround florence and it has the BEST view of the city. It is pretty expensive... but if you want to impress your lady this is THE place to take her. Go up around 6:00pm and have a few cocktails and watch the sunset and then enjoy an amazing dinner. This is the best reccomendation I can give!

Same here, I have been putting down Bordeaux, ST, CDP as fast as I can. Speaking of which, I need to buy some more wine soon, been a couple months since I bought anything good. What do you buying?

Going to Italy for 3 weeks in August, will do most of my sightseeing at the beach. Great scenery. But will go up to Rome and do a day or two. Fabulous city. Buon vacanza.

I think I would like a day or two at the beach too. What are the best beaches? Does the Amalfi Coast have beaches?
