OK, I have read that Jeter is voted the most overrated, that his defense is bad. I just saw that in crunching the numbers if I read it correctly that Jeter is horrible defesively. IS this correct fmsesq44 in the HOF thread? What are you thoughts?

I do not buy it. Do not throw numbers in my face when I can watch and see a player play. Jeter is a very good player and is not bad defensively. I do not see it. He has GREAT instincts, is a winner and gets it done. He is everything I like in a ballplayer. He is a winner. No way someone influences me with some numbers from a computer that mean very little. I have watched baseball all my life and now a great player when i see one. Derek Jeter is great even though he plays for the Yanks.

Jeter's game cannot be measured by stats alone. Winner.

Very mediocre defensively.

But a great hitter.

And yeah, what FairWarning said.

1 - Jeter is mediocre defensively. Statiscally over his career he is the virtual definition of average when it comes to range. He makes quality plays, doesn't boot a lot of balls, but his range is exceedingly average. Everyone in baseball knows this and it is often discussed. Remember, when A Fraud came to NYY there was talk of moving Jeter to 2B but he basically vetoed it.
2 - FW is correct though, he is much more than statistics.
3 - Very good combo of speed, power and BA.
4 - Super clutch
5 - 5 200 hit seasons and 3 more 190+ seasons
6 - 6 .320 BA seasons, OPS+ of 123

There are few, if any SS that compare with him offensively, but he is pedestrian defensively. That said, he is absolutely great and IMO, should get into the HOF quickly if he retired today.

Contrary to some of my HOF posts littered with statistics, I judge much more based on what I see (which is why I will fight to the death for Alomar over Biggio, Rice over Palmeiro, Morris over Glavine, Sutton, Perry and Niekro).

8-16-09:

one their few bright spots was derek jeter. He passed hall of famer luis aparicio for most hits by a shortstop in the third inning, when he fought off a pitch near his fists for an opposite-field double that scored ramiro pena. His 2,674th hit as a shortstop came two innings after he led off the game with a single.
"it's still kind of hard to believe, to say the least," jeter said.
He was 8 for 16 in the four-game series. He also has 13 hits as a designated hitter in his career. jeter's 2,688 hits are second in yankees history, 33 behind lou gehrig.

i hate the Yankmee's and the Evil Empire, but i always give Jeter props when his name is brought up in discussion. I've watched him make too many great plays and hits in the clutch.
I've seen him catch liners in the air and turn in the air and make a throw to 3rd or 2nd to double players up.
Just a day or so ago he made a double play, ran to second and the base runner tried to upend him and he jumped over them and regained his composure and still made the throw to 1st.

Two years old and still the same, average fielder, huge advantage hitting like that at shortstop, and like all players winning because of his teammates as much as what he does
