I'm sure some sharps have their bad seasons.. But do they have bad YEARS?

Is it possible for a sharp to lose for a prolonged period of time?

Days, yes.
Weeks, maybe.
Months, possibly.
A year or more? I don't think so. Not without screwing up bad.

months yes....years i dont know...i would think a sharp that uses proper money mangement could lose for a year if they had a few bad months in a row....i would guess that most sharps are really sharp in one sport though and not always betting year round...some sharps may share information with others that have very little knowledge in that sport...

Their ability to limit losses during bad streaks is what makes them sharps.

I have bet EVERYDAY but 4 days since last Sept 1st anf the thing I am most proud of is the fact I have had only 1 4 day losing streak in that span. The ironic thing is I am currently in a 3 day losing and am down a little so far tonite, so maybe at 4 tommorow. I have had only 1 losing month and that wasn't too bad either (less than 8 units).

I am having the hardest time dealing with streak this currently as I decided on July 1st I was going to turn it up a notch and have paid dearly for it, pissing away all of my June profits (23 units) in 2 days. It's almost as if the gambling gods striaghten me out everytime I think I want to go up a notch. The variance is just too high for me when I double my normal bet size. Back to the slow grind until football season.

One other thing I preach and some may not agree with, but I feel strongly stops a prolonged losing streak, is too keep plugging away and enough high volume, small size bets to bankroll type plays you will eventually come ahead. This has worked best for me.

Yes, BW, BB, Chip, Kosher, Tiger, etc..have all had bad runs..some as long as a year or more. Then again with some of them, some of the losing sides are at times designed disinformation, thus can be misleading.

Many old school sharps like the Lil Lunatic, Tomatoes,etc..before passing away, could have years that were absolutely horrible, lost tons, but also had runs and years where they made absolute fortunes. it happens to all..even the most talented and informed.

That said, they still did things better than others that may have had equally bad years. They generally were originators/not followers, knew where the line would go with better accuracy, got better numbers early to lay short/take high at close, had better contacts, better info, better outs, etc..

Even the best of the best have needed backing or bankrolls reinforced at times, the difference with the Elite Pros is, their track records, contacts, outs, etc..they have/had places and people to go to for backing or bankrolling when times were tough.

As a teen, I used to ask an uncle of mine, how he had the balls to keep firing when absolutely burying himself following losers and sendouts, he replied, "You can't hit homers, unless you stay in the box and keep swinging!"

Go read interviews with BW, BB, Bob Martin, Lem, HH,etc..they all had times when their backs were to the wall.

It depends on what kind of sharp they are. There are several kinds. Some are like those mentioned that pound out a few games every day and go through months in the red. Others are sharp enough to know when there is good value on a line, really good value like the linesman fucked up. I would bet these people never have bad months.

The idea of a sharp in this forum is kind of like the bogeyman or santa. Of course sharps go through prolonged losing trends. Mathematics is what dictates losing runs. They will go through less since they are placing profitable bets, but the fact is no matter how good you are, shorterm results are governed by variance.

Their ability to limit losses during bad streaks is what makes them sharps.

Not true at all. A true sharp realises that a bad run is usually variance and not poor play on their part. If it is simply variance then there is nothing one can do to limit losses. Lowering betsizes or making less selections won't change anything; it'll just cost the bettor ev. What makes them sharp is a greater understanding of the mathematics behind gambling, knowledge of the betting market, ability to discover and take advantage of opportunities (eg a hedge fund type sharp) etc.

QL gave the best response by far, apart from the higher turnover sharps not having losing months. You can lose over a 1000 bet stretch ;)

It would depend on how frequent he plays. And good bankroll management can offset the severity of it. If they play within their means, no need to panic when the inevitable happens.

Of course they do. Can they have a losing season? Of course. And if they have 1 losing season they can have several sports lumped together in a losing manner. It happens. You need the bankroll and discipline to wait it out.
