Just one big play for today....

5 STAR: (905) PHILADELPHIA (-$121) over Houston
(Listing Hamels only)
(Risking $605 to win $500)

Jim Feist
My free pick of the day is the game between (907) MIL Brewers and (908) PIT Pirates. Take "(908) PIT Pirates". Ian Snell has stepped up as a young ace, with the Pirates going 4-1 his last 5 starts. Snell has a strong 88-32 K/BB ratio and a 2.90 ERA. The young hurler has owned Milwaukee in his career, with a 3-0 mark and a 3.86 ERA against them. He's fanned 22 Brewers in 21 innings. Milwaukee starter Claudio Vargas has a good record, but that won't continue the way he's pitching: A 5.63 ERA his last three starts. Play the Pirates!

Dave Cokin
My free pick of the day is the game between (925) CLE Indians and (926) DET Tigers. Take "(925) CLE Indians". Dave had a huge Tuesday night on the diamond. He won his sixth straight TOP LEVEL side with the Reds, and Dave's special $10 Supertotal got home in the Angels-Rangers contest. Dave has another dynamite offer for the holiday, and this one's FREE at 1-888-389-7223. Be sure to take full advantage!... "Not much to choose between Jake Westbrook and Kenny Rogers as the Indians battle the Tigers again. Both veteran starters have rolled off the DL in terrific form. But Cleveland is catching a nice price in this spot, and the Indians are on a major roll right now. Excellent team value is the catalyst that makes the Indians my Bonus Play once again tonight."

Guaranteed Pick: Larry Ness

Game: Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees Jul 4 2007 1:05PM
Prediction: Minnesota Twins
Reason: Mike Mussina and Johan Santana square off this afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Mussina (4-5, 4.63 ERA) is 10-0 with a 2.82 ERA in 13 home starts against the Twins. He's 20-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 29 career starts against them BUT he's 0-3 with a 5.84 ERA in his last five. He's also lost two playoff starts while opposing Santana. Santana is a modest 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against the Yankees, not including his 1-1 mark with a 3.20 ERA in four playoff outings. However, Santana is putting together his best stretch of the season, going 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last four outings (team is 4-0). Santana has won three straight starts on the road, where he's 6-2 in nine starts with a 1.77 ERA, the second-best mark in the AL. Mussina has also pitched well lately, going 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA in his last five starts. However, the team is minus-$751 in his starts in 2007, ranking him 229th among 236 starting pitchers. While admittedly most of New York's trouble vs left-handers has come away from Yankee Stadium, the fact remains that the Yankees are 9-13 (minus-$1,060) vs lefties this season and in Santana, face MLB's best left-hander! Daytime Delight on the Min Twins.

Larry Ness' Weekly Wipeout Winner (13-4 run since May 6!)
My Weekly Wipeout Winner is on the Det Tigers at 7:05 ET. The Indians (51-32) have won six straight and extended their lead over the Tigers in the AL Central to three games Tuesday with a 5-4 win in 11 innings. However, Cleveland will have to get past Kenny Rogers tonight. The Tigers went 24-9 in Rogers' regular season starts last year and at plus-$1,363, Rogers was the third-biggest 'moneymaker' among starters in 2006. Rogers then went 3-0 in the postseason, without allowing a run! Rogers already appears to be in midseason form after missing three months following the removal of a blood clot in his throwing shoulder. He had off-season surgery but the 42-year-old has shown no signs of wear in winning his first two starts, conceding just one run and six hits in 12 innings while walking only one batter (0.75 ERA). Cleveland will counter with Jake Westbrook. Westbrook has made just four road starts this year, posting an ERA of 9.15. In three starts vs Detroit in '06, Westbrook allowed 28 hits and 17 ERs in 18.1 innings for an 8.35 ERA. Cleveland's winning streak gets snapped tonight. Weekly Wipeout Winner on the Det Tigers.

Good Luck...Larry

Big Al's 3-Game Package with 2 Underdogs!
Our 3 selections include Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Cleveland.

Atlanta -- At 9:10pm our selection is on the Atlanta Braves. Dodger lefthander Mark Hendrickson apparently took the month of June off from starting and pitched only in relief. His last start was on May 31, and Hendrickson had been so horrible over his last five starts of the month (0-3 with a 7.19 ERA ) that beginning in June, Los Angeles thought better of having the 6 foot, 9 inch veteran in the rotation and relegated him to the bullpen for all of last month. But some really bad performances from guys like Hong-Chih Kuo have led to Hendrickson's reinstatement, and we will have to see whether it is for good, or only for the month of July! I look for him to get bombed tonight. Take Atlanta.

Cleveland -- At 7:05 pm, our selection is on the Cleveland Indians. Yes, Kenny Rogers has been great, but it's too tough for me to pass up taking the Indians as an underdog. Detroit is a poor 5-11 at home this year vs. division rivals (including 0-4 vs. the Tribe), and Westbrook has been solid since coming off the Disabled List (4 runs in his last 14 innings). Take Cleveland.

Pittsburgh -- At 4:05 pm, our selection is on the Pittsburgh Pirates over Milwaukee, as the Bucs have the MUCH BETTER pitcher on the hill today. I was surprised that Ian Snell did not make the All-Star team. And if there was any justice in the world, Snell would have been chosen as the Pirates' representative rather than Freddy Sanchez. Snell's ERA this year is 2.90 and his WHIP is 1.16, while Claudio Vargas comes into this game with a 4.29 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. The Pirates have never lost to Milwaukee with Snell on the mound (3-0, 1.80 ERA), and they'll get another victory this afternoon. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.

4. Mariners vs. Royals Under 9

Guaranteed Pick: Ben Burns

Game: Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates Jul 4 2007 4:05PM
Prediction: under
Reason: I'm playing on Pittsburgh and Milwaukee to finish UNDER the total. Last night's game slippled beneath the total and I'm expecting to see a pitcher's duel this afternoon. Vargas is 6-1 with a respectable 4.10 ERA. In his most recent road start, Vargas allowed just two earned runs through six complete innings at Minnesota. That gave him a 3.90 ERA on the road for the season. He's also been better during the afternoon than he has been at night, going 2-0 while holding opposing hitters to a .234 batting average. Additionally, Vargas has always dominated the Pirates. Indeed, after blanking them through six innings this May, Vargas is now 4-0 with a miniscule 1.60 ERA and 0.992 WHIP vs. the Pirates. Not to be outdone, his opponent, Ian Snell is 3-0 with an awesome 1.80 ERA and 0.882 WHIP in three starts vs. the Brewers. Snell outdueled Capuano (twice) and Sheets in those three starts, all of which came last season. That should spell trouble for Milwaukee hitters, as Snell has been even better this season, particularly at home. In eight home starts, Snell has averaged seven complete innings per start while going 5-2 with a stingy 2.26 ERA and 1.132 WHIP. Its also worth noting that Snell has limited opposing hitters to a mere .208 batting average in his five daytime starts. Not surprisingly, Snell has seen the UNDER go a profitable 10-5-1 for the season. Look for both pitchers to continue their success against today's opponent as the final score stays beneath the total and the UNDER improves to 8-2-1 when the Pirates played at home with a line in the +100 to -125 range. *1st Half TOY

The Diamondbacks are receiving solid value today as a road underdog. Arizona is 7-1 in their last 8 games against the NL Central Division after a nice win over St. Louis last night. The Cardinals are just 1-7 in their last 8 games as a favorite. St. Louis is 8-17 in their last 25 versus a team that features a winning record like the Diamondbacks. The Cardinals have only seemed to be able to put away bad teams. Arizona is one of the top teams in all of baseball right now. Bet the Diamondbacks to win Wednesday.

He will do everything in his power to make sure he sways the voters tonight with another gem on the mound. He faces Josh Johnson who is 0-3 with a 10.97 ERA on the year. Young won’t have a problem putting this Marlins team away early while getting the run support he is looking for from his mates. The Marlins are 18-42 in their last 60 games as an underdog of +151 to +200. The Marlins are 0-5 in Johnson's last 5 starts. The Padres are 12-2 in Young's last 14 starts during game 2 of a series. Today we go with the Yankees as they host the Twins in what should be a great pitching matchup.
This one could go quickly as the New York is sending Mike Mussina to the mound to face Twins' ace Johan Santana.
Mussina (4-5, 4.63 ERA) is 10-0 with a 2.82 ERA in 13 home starts against the Twins including 1-0 with a 4.74 ERA in three outings with the Yankees. For his career, Mussina is 20-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 29 career starts against Minnesota.
Santana (9-6, 2.76 ERA) is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against the Yankees.
But in this one let's give the edge to Mussina and the home team and play the Yankees. Mussina is 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA in his last five starts and in his last outing he gave up one run on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 2-1 win over the A's.
The Yankees won 8-0 on Tuesday and they seem to be on a little bit of a roll again as they look to win three straight. The New York pitching has allowed only nine hits in the first two games and one run.
And keep in mind the Twins have lost 15 of 17 games in the Bronx. I like our chances with the Yankees today. Play New York and get plus-money at home.

A nice winner with the Cubs on the run line yesterday boosts my overall record to 93-85-3 with my last 181 overall Bonus Plays!
You just don't see the Yankees as the underdog very often, and you see them as a home dog even less.
That's not completely the reason I'm siding with them here today, folks. The main reason is Mike Mussina's utter domination of Minnesota over his long career.
The right-hander is 20-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 29 career games against the Twins, but it gets even better. That's because Mussina has never lost a regular season home start against Minnesota in his career, going 10-0 with a 2.82 ERA in 13 home starts.
The Twins are slumping offensively right now, having managed only nine hits in the first two games of this series. They have scored a total of one run in their last three games.
Minnesota has lost 15 of its last 17 regular-season games at Yankee Stadium.
Johan Santana or not, I'm taking the Yankees as the home dog for the win today.

3? NEW YORK YANKEES

I expect a pitcher's duel this afternoon at PNC Park, as Vargas and Snell put goose egg upon goose egg up on the board.
Let's take a look at the numbers supporting the cause today, as Snell is a nifty 5-2 at home with an ERA of 2.26. Snell has also handled the Brewers the last 3 times he has faced them, allowing just 4 runs in 20 innings of work last year against the Brew Crew.
On the other side of the coin, Claudio Vargas owns a 6-1 mark for the year, and while his ERA may be a shade over 4 for the season, he has limited the Pirates to just 1 run in 12 innings of work against them this year for a 2-0 mark.
Dating back to last year, Vargas has surrendered just 5 runs to Pittsburgh in 24 innings of work.
I like the UNDER this afternoon between the Brewers and Pirates.

Sports Gambling Hotline

Today we feel Cole Hamels will notch win #10, as the southpaw's last win came back on June 12th, and he has had 3 tries at the elusive 10th win and has come up dry.
Not today, as both Hamels and the Phils snap their losing streaks. The Phillies have dropped the first two of this four game set, but they are 11-6 when Hamels starts this season, and Hamels did defeat Houston earlier this season in an April start.
Sampson counters and his numbers have been taking a hit, as he has allowed 16 runs over his last 19 innings of work. Sampson did take an April loss to Philadelphia, as the Phils roughed him up for 7 runs in just 4 innings of work.
We will back Hamels to get his 10th win of the season this afternoon at Minute Maid Park.

Play on Philly.

Indians at Tigers (926)

As good as the Indians offense is, they struggle against lefties at just 8-7 on the road. They face a dynamite ace lefty here in Kenny Rogers, who has been lights out after taking the first half of the season off, for the most part. This is a great pitcher's park, too, and the Detroit offense is crushing the ball, No. 1 in baseball. Cleveland starter Jake the Snake Westbrook hasn't been on his game, with a 1-3 record and a 6.10 ERA. He's never pitched well against the Tigers, with a 4-7 mark and a 6.53 ERA against them, and this is the best Detroit offense he will face yet.

Indians & Tigers Under 9.5 on ESPN

Kenny Rogers has been pitching out of his mind since the playoffs last year, and Jake Westbrook has also pitched well since his return, so we expect the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers to struggle to score runs tonight.
Few people will forget the post-season that Rogers has in 2006, as he tossed 23 scoreless innings in three starts, and although he had a late start this season, he has picked up right where he left off. He tossed six scoreless innings in his 2007 debut, and he then showed he was human in his last start by allowing one run on four hits in six frames. Rogers also tossed Quality Starts in his last two outings against the Indians last season, allowing a total of four runs and only eight hits in 14 innings of work
Westbrook has come back strong after a stint on the Disabled List, posting Quality Starts in both of his starts since returning while allowing four runs in 14 innings. In fact, if we ignore his shortened outing on May 2 where he was pulled after 1.1 innings and landed on the DL shortly after, Westbrook would have four consecutive Quality Starts.
These teams stayed Under the total last night despite the game going into extra innings, and we expect both of these starters to work deep into the game tonight, resulting in another Under in this ESPN telecast.

Pick: Indians, Tigers Under 9.5 (-110)

Seattle Mariners vs. Kansas City Royals (MLB)
Jul 4, 2007 8:10 PM EDT

Play: Money Line: Seattle Mariners

Seattle skipper Mike Hargrove stunned just about everyone in the baseball world (including himself apparently) by announcing early this week that he was resigning. This odd situation is made even stranger by the fact that the Mariners are in the middle of one of their most successful runs in quite some time and closing in on the first place Angels. But whatever the reason, the Mariners know they must move on as a team and continue to try and win games. The biggest surprise of this team has been the performance of their starters, including tonight's pitcher, lefthander Jarrod Washburn. Not only has Seattle won nine of Washburn's sixteen starts, but he has performed better on the road than at his stingy home ball park (3-2 with a 3.68 ERA away from Safeco). KC's Brian Bannister is starting to come down to earth after beginning the season inexplicably looking like Cy Young. Bannister has a 5.71 ERA in his last three starts and he has already lost to Seattle twice this season -- by a combined score of 14-2! The KC offense is only batting .246 vs. southpaws this season. Take Seattle. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

Larry Ness | MLB Money Line
triple-dime bet908 PIT (-115) vs 907 MIL
Analysis: There have been 236 different pitchers to make a start in 2007 and Milwaukee's Claudio Vargas is MLB's biggest 'moneymaker.' The Brewers are 12-2 in his 14 starts this season, plus-$1,074 (at $100/game). The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA in seven lifetime appearances (six starts) against Pittsburgh, including a 3-0 mark in four starts the last two seasons (team is 4-0). So how come I'm NOT taking the Brewers? Because of Pittsburgh starter Ian Snell. Snell has been a dominant pitcher for the sad-sack Pirates these last two seasons. His record, compared to Pittsburgh's record in games in which he doesn't start, is downright spectacular. Let me explain. The Pirates went 67-95 (.414) in 2006, with Snell going 14-11 (.560). So far this year, the Pirates are 35-47 (.427) with Snell going 6-5 (.545). Those numbers may not seem so overwhelming to you but look a little deeper. The Prates went 18-14 in Snell's starts LY and are 10-6 in his starts so far this year. So let's do the math. Since the beginning of last year, when Snell starts, the Pirates are 28-20 for a winning percentage of .583 but when someone else starts, they are 74-122 for a winning percentage of .378. That's plus-.205 with Snell on the mound, a HUGE difference. Throw in the facts that Snell is 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last five outings (his ERA is 1.45 in the four wins), Pittsburgh is 6-2 in his home starts in 2007 and that in three starts vs Milwaukee last year (none in '07), he went 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA and you can see why I'm on Pittsburgh.

Scott Rickenbach's Players Advantage

OVER the total in Houston vs Philadelphia @ 2:05 ET
Sampson vs Hamels

Yesterday this total ended up being a push. Today there will be no push as, after this total opened up at a 9, it has now dropped down to an 8.5 in many spots. This is an excellent value as each team getting to just four runs guarantees us a winner. The reason we feel strongly about each team getting their fair share of runs today has a lot to do with yesterday's wasted opportunities. The teams combined to leave 27 men on base yesterday.
Both teams are hitting the ball well so far in this series. Both teams also burned up a lot of bullpen in yesterday's game. Each team already had bullpen issues so that means today they will have to be especially reliant on their starting pitchers. That is an issue because neither the Phillies Cole Hamels nore the Astros Chris Sampson have been as effective as usual of late. Also, each of these pitchers struggled in their most recent outing against their respective opponent today. Look for runs early, often, and throughout this contest and it should cash in an easy over for us.

Play OVER the total in Houston
======================================== ==============
Robert Ross

Giants have dropped 14 of Matt Cain's 16 starts with a lack of run support the main problem. The club is 4-15 against the money line when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season and 26-45 against the money line on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 over the last 2 seasons.

Take Cincinnati

Tony Mathew's Free MLB Selection for July 4, 2007.

Matchup: Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees

Selection: Minnesota Twins (-130)

Explanation: We will side with the Minnesota Twins as they face-off against the New York Yankees in Wednesday's MLB contest.

The Minnesota Twins will use starting pitcher Johan Santana. Johan Santana has pitched solid this season. In fact, Johan Santana has a 2.76 ERA on the season. In addition, Johan Santana has a 0.86 ERA in his last 3 starts. It's safe to say that the New York Yankees will struggle to score runs today.

As for the New York Yankees, they will use starting pitcher Mike Mussina. Mike Mussina has struggled this season (4.62 ERA), which is a big reason why the New York Yankees are 5-8 in Mike Mussina's 13 starts this season. We see the Minnesota Twins being able to score many runs today.

Take the Minnesota Twins!

Selection: San Francisco Giants (-115)

Today the San Francisco Giants will be on the road as they take on the Cincinnati Reds. We will side with the Giants! The Giants will send to the mound Matt Cain. Matt Cain has pitched well this season (3.38 ERA), and we expect to see another solid performance by him tonight. On the other hand, the Reds will send to the mound Matt Belisle. Matt Belisle has struggled this season (5.03 ERA), as well as continues to get worse (7.88 ERA in his last 3 starts). With that said, we see the San Francisco Giants scoring many easy runs today. The Giants have also proven to be the much superior team when compared to the Reds. In fact, the San Francisco Giants are 6-3 in their last 9 meetings against the Giants (when playing in Cincinnati). In this case, the value is with the Giants! Take the San Francisco Giants

If these numbers are true this guy stinks! BB I know you do a lot of work and it's much appreciated here- is there a way to find the same numbers for NESS? He seems to be doing better.

Thanks again for all the work you put in and BOL with all your picks!
