I look at this team and I see solid pitching in the starting rotation, a decent pen and offense should never be a problem with this lineup. So do we blame it on Charlie? What is the deal with this team and what will it take for them to put it together?

I wasn't aware of that ranking, but I guess that is the problem. I just see a talented lineup and think they should have more to show than what they currently are.

ownershipis is not keeping them from winning...they won more games last year than the eventual ws champ.

they have 83-89 wins each of the last 4 seasons and will this year as well.

burrell can be useful, but if we can get another arm for him, then naturally he could be traded.

We've had bad luck with closers, but if myers could get healthy, we'd be fine. I honestly dont even want gordon to improve his health, i think his career ended last year, and shouldnt be on a major league roster.

alfonseca could become a set up guy, geary isnt bad, madsen been good lately, and i personally like zagurski. What they could really use is another lefty like him that could get out other teams lefties. Thats what we should be looking for. We have a closer between myers and alfonseca, we just need health to come around. The lefty stopper is what our management should be focusing on.

I really think wes helms was not the answer at 3rd base, just like barajas isnt at catcher. But both guys have fell into nice roles and are used as spot starters. For the first time i can remember, we have a very deep team, with many strong, late inning pinch hitters and runners for key spots.

In reference to burrell, think Dobbs could be our starting 3b or left fielder for the next 3-4 seasons if he can consistently hit the way he has.

Holding on to Rowand despite his name appearing in trade talks is very necessary and i think trading him should just cease to be talked about. Hes done nothing but succeed and become a fan favorite since he arrived, and he basically just got to philly, so imdumbfounded every time he gets mentioned int rade talks.

So that means micheal bourn will have to become the left fielder if burrell is moved, and dobbs would have to learn the 3b as his permanent spot.

With the emergence of victorino as an every day player and as one of the top steal guys in the nl, we would have one of the fastest outfields in the majors with bourn and victorino.

So our major problem? Need 1 more strong left handed arm in the bullpen.

Starting pitching is a concern, but every team is thin when it comes to having 5 solid starters, theres about 7-8 teams maybe that can say they are alls et when it comes to starting pitching. of those 7-8 teams, only 1 or 2 can say they can match the phillies lineup, as we r near tops in the majors in runs scored.

charlie manuel is a problem, but replacing him mid year would be bad i think......unless u can get mike hargrove!!!!!!!!! But he has no passion, so guess not...LOLOLOLOL

So, playoff hopes? tread water around 500 like we are, get myers back, turn it on late, and pray thatw e dont fall half a game shy again.

In reference to previous seasons, anyone who follows this team, knows being above the 500 mark at this point in the season is better off than phils usually are be4 the all star break. the last 3 weeks have been disappointing, as we had a real shot to take a division lead be4 the all star break being down only 2.5 games just a few short weeks ago

well, u asked for some info...theres a mouthful

zeke and austin are you guys on this planet???

i live in philly i am not a philly fan but here is my take on the team

1.) pat gillick is a disgrace. i think manuel stinks as a manager but lets face it the bullpen is top 5 worst in the major leagues. ryan madson stinks. he never gets into a game and gets 3 outs in a row. jose mesa shouldnt even be on a major league roster. the bullpen is just a disgrace. anyone who thinks otherwise is a complete moron and knows nothing about baseball.

2.) pat burrell stinks. - this kid is making millions of dollars and is batting .205. so either they should buy him out of his contract but they wont because they are too cheap, or they should fire the hitting coach because every single pitcher in baseball knows throw burrell an 0-2 pitch on the outside corner and hes gonna stand there and look at it.

3.) rowand is a true philly player but he has to go. he is a free agent at the end of the year and there is ZERO chance he resigns here. ZERO. hes going back to chicago hands down. i dont care what he says in the interviews. i mean are you people that f-in dumb to think hes gonna come out and say no i wont resign here i hate playing here? that would be a death sentence for him. look what happened with lieber- they didnt move him in spring training like they should have now hes out for the year and they spent 9 million on a guy who did zero for them this year and he walks next season.

the truth is the phillies are just stupid. their ownership and management are just plain dumb. there is no question they spend money. but its dumb money spent. giving burrell the money - DUMB. spending money on wes helms and nunez - DUMB.

this team will never win. if they were smart, they would go get a true stud of a player and show the fans they really wanna win.

The one constant the Phillies have had over their multiple losing decades has been ownership. No one even knows who these assholes are

soswalter - i agree with you. the ownership spends money which is definitely seen in their current payroll. the problem is they hire guys who are push overs so that montgomery can control the team.

cmon charlie manuel and gillick are jokes. and jimmy williams will be the next manager once uncle charlie is canned, and he is a joke too.

its just too bad because this team would have people flocking to the stadium if they would just make the right moves.

if u can call me a moron because i think ryan madsen has a place on this team, then i can tell u growing up in philly, u r like every other philly fan with misdirected anger, who takes it out in the wrong spots...the fact is, they are in the race, and what they need most is aleft handed arm in the bpen........

yes manuel needs to go, will he midseason? prolly not....will ownership fire gillick or just give up owning the team right now because they r doinmg a bad job because u say so? not likely.....so why bother blaming losses on anything but onfield decisions and personnel.

they have the lineup to compete with anyone, and the closer situation will be fine once myers returns...and if he wants to go back into the rotation, that could work also.....if not this year,, then next year.....

if the phillies can make the plunge i belive they can...i think rowand stays with a winner.....and there is money to free up with burrell and lieber moving on.......so.....we could get somebody who changes games if the money is well spent.....i guess because i live in central Ny and only get to 10-15 games a year, I dont have that old Philadelphia Pessiimism going, and after every homer, I blast that corny Elton John's "philadelphia freedom" song, when i got a gnote or more going on the game.........

philadelphia is one of the grossest places on earth to live, but id move back in a heart beat if my life wasnt foicused geographically on the syracuse area where i live, just to spend 6 months a year at the ball park since as an adult i have no problem spending the money necessary to go to each and every game...........I grew up loving this team thru very bad teams....RICK SCHU WAS OUR FUCKING 3RD BASEMEN AFTER MIKE SCHMIDT RETIRED!!!!!!!!!

BUT IVE PLAYED SPORTS ALL MY LIFE, EVEN IN COLLEGE, AND NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ME in sports than this phillies team, it is the one irrational love i have toward anyhting in sports....and we have a legit team to contend for a title.....they just need a little injury luck, and one good left handed arm in the bullpen.

U focus on how much managemnt sucks, but not on the monstrous run totals we are able to put up and never be out of a game......maybe u dont remember how lenny dykstra and darren daulton won games in 1993, with mitch williams on the mound we needed 7-8 just tof eel comfortable........so be a fan if u like this team......and focus on what they will do.....not what they wont......they aint firing anyone anytime soon

i agree zeke....i also see the phillies (gulp) making a run for the division.

i know a lot of you are shaking your heads right now but the fact is....4.5 games out of first is not a lot, and to win this division would not even be close to a miracle...

even if the phillies do not win it i can see the mets losing it. atlanta will fade.

we will see.

zeke - i have no anger towards the phillies. i am not a fan. i am just telling u that it is rediculous to hear you and these other fans calling 610 (the radio show in philly) and rant and rave about how your in the race one week, and then your out of it the next.

pat burrell isnt moving on anywhere u owe him 14 million dollars next year to be a .205 hitter. that is a bad business move. just agree with me that management is dumb. they spend money but they spend it on bad moves. giving tom gordon more money then they offered billy wagner was a complete and utter disgrace. thats just dumb baseball. a high school baseball coach knew tom gordon was done two years ago.

burrell has 2 years left @ $13.25 mil.

he also has a no trade clause, so unless philly fans start throwing batteries again, he aint goin nowhere.

As a diehard lifetime Phils fan...

Although Charlie is a knucklehead good ol' boy I don't think you can blame him.
1st thing...Management Stinks. They overpay mediocre players Lieber(7.8 mill), Garcia (10 mill), Eaton? (over 7 million this year by the way) BURRELL!!!.
2nd..Pitching is bad bullpen really bad. Starting pitcher are decent above average at best. Alfonseca hasn't been pitching that badly in the closer role and Madsen is at least average but the middle relief sucks. I mean SUCKS. Geary?, Zagurski?, Condrey? And my personal favorite them reaquiring Jose Mesa. I hated him in his prime in the closer role and they get him back? The other nite in their 13 inning loss to Hou he threw 1 pitch. The homer that ended it. All their relivers are really, really bad.

Their bats are solid and the guys play hard but the pitching stinks. That's it. Let's Go Phils! Everybody hits Woo Hoo!

Era

Hamels ERA is 3.72 the best on the team. The only other 2 under 4.00 are Madson and Alfonseca who has 12 fingers by the way so I don't know if he counts. That's kind of unfair. If he only had 10 it would be at least 4.50.

i agree with everyhitng said about dumb decisions to give money to gordon and not wagner....and paying burrell and lieber.....

so u point out 2 mistakes...i agree.....i dont see anyone praising them for moving thome so howard could become the next great hero?

how bout proactive decisions to make victorino a full time player, or the acquisition of dobbs?

every single night, our lineup can include any 1 of 12-13 guys who can be productive......and who ever isnt used, has a legit shot to come in late and contribute........we have a very deep team...much deeper than others......

philadelphia freedom baby......love it .......we win the nl east baby, u can find me 20 rows back behind the phils dugout on right field side, next home series throwing nachos at the phanatic when he dances on the dugout.......

I'm a lifelong Phillies fan, but Phils' ownership despite the late '70s and early '80s, has never acted like ownership proportionate to what the city of Philly is..a top ten major metro..it's that simple!

And just as with past teams, this group is letting years come and go with talented everyday players(actually one the league's best lineups in run production over the last years) that are goood enough to be elite, yet the Phils never get active for elite arms in free agency, and not since the '70s have that top level farm system, though it is on it's way back slightly from it's pitiful late '80s/'90s run to bottom feeder status.

The Eagles have a great owner..the Phils do not..neither does the Sixers..not sure about Flyers.

Always will be a Phantic wearing my hats and garb..but the ownership and office leadership tend to be losers..that act like losers..sit on their hands with their tight asses with BS alibis about not overpaying the market..gonna build within(ala late '70s)..and other BS excuses for continual loser status!

10K and counting!
