I know this isn't the right place for this post but I'm asking the mods to leave this post here. I have a good friend who turned 58 a few months ago and had never really gone for regular checkups. He told me he had some rectal bleeding for a few months and I told him to go to the doctor, but he kept putting it off. A few months ago I started to notice small amounts of blood myself and convinced myself that it was probably nothing. After some urging from my wife and my friends wife they were able to convince us both to go in and get checked. We made the appointment for the same day and we went in yesterday and had our colonoscopy. I was very relieved to find out that I had some diverticulitis which probably was the source of my bleeding but everything else looked ok. The test is painless and I got all worked up for nothing. The worst part was the prep the night before. I was not even sedated. Unfortunately I just found out a few minutes ago that my friend was not as lucky. He has what appears to be a very large cancerous tumor and must immediately be admited for surgery. I am devistated by this news that I just recieved. Please guys if your 50 or over go get checked out.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Any reason he didn't go to the doctor as soon as his rectum started bleeding? That would be a big - red - flag for me. Then again I know people who just don't go to the doctor whatsoever for some religous reasons, I forget what they're called.

Kept telling himself it was probably hemorrhoids and it would go away. I think he was just scared of what they might tell him.

And while your at it, make sure your old ladies get mammograms. My wife just diagnosed with breast cancer, but we caught it early and the prognosis is very good because of it.

Harrington, I hope youre friend makes out okay. On youre case watch and keep mind to your diet as it can be very painful if it gets further along, my mother in law had it. Youre friend will be in alot of prayers by most.

excellent post harrington, hoping all works out well for your friend. took my 70yr old dad for his 1st a few months ago and you are correct, the fear of what might be found is what leads many men to forgo this exam.

Harr, she was operated on 2 days ago, came home yesterday. So far so good. She has kept her sense of humour through it all.

wow, hope all is well judge. i'll say a little prayer for your wife, with the progress made in treatment and her early detection i'll say the outlook is very positive, as her attitude should be. fight the good fight as i know you will and please keep us apdated on her progress.

good advice and possibly younger if you have had stomach problems. I am 33 and had one a couple years ago and had 32 polpys removed and at am a high risk for colon cancer so I have to have one every 6 months, just hoping not to have it removed, but will likely have to at some point. Much better to be safe than sorry.

Harrington:

Colon cancer is one of the best cancers a man can have (as far as it goes). My father had it three years ago - had 18 inches of his large intestine removed, and chemo - and now he's fine. This is one of those things that most people seem to beat.

I hope you are right, it is still scary as hell.
