Would you conside Vegas numbers to move like the offshore world, with steam and the like?

It is a known fact a book like SIA is squaresville for bettors in the offshore world. Are the Vegas books that square with their numbers? Any of them?

Most books are pretty close to the offshores with line moves. Terrible's casino is one of the few books that I have seen to move there lines by public betting but their limits are lower. Their favorites and overs are usually a point or two higher although there are some games they move according to steam or they will hold the line.

From my experience, futures odds always seem worse in Vegas than the offshore books. I'd say the idea there is that Vegas books know they will still get tourists visiting during the year that want to put that futures bet in no matter how bad the odds.

I also think NFL lines on gameday and NBA playoff game lines on weekends seem pretty shaded toward the square market in Vegas as well. At least in my few experiences there at those times.

If an when I ever get to Vegas that will be one of the first things I will do. I want to compare the numbers at the sports books with a Pinny's lines. If there is some value at the sportsbooks I think it can be very beneficial to move there one day, if not than the offshore world is where I would only pursure.

Depends on the sport and the time of year....

For instance, during regular CBB or NBA seasons I found the lines to be sharper in Vegas than at Pinny (granted it was a small sample size) a couple of days.

But when I was there during March Madness and the squares were in town playing the Pinny lean worked out well in my favor.

I'd say Vegas lines can sometimes have that California bias in them compared to the offshore books. They don't mind jacking it up a bit on those California teams since they know they will get action on them anyway.

Off-shore books all use the same lines. Vegas books use lines that will balance their action.

These days you get a lot more better lines in Las Vegas than all the off-shores combined. Vegas books don't move off air anywhere near what the weak off-shore books do.

That is what I thought. Can you take a laptop into a Vegas book?

Not saying you can't find a good line here and there. Just saying it is probably easier to sit at home and pick off lines offshore than it would be to run around town chasing slow lines.

Las Vegas is back to being the real bookmakers in the way they deal their lines.

The big places will toss you for betting steam games if that's what you are doing. If you win on your own they take every bet and pay with a smile.

Most people will never win enough to scare a Vegas book, but bet the steam and they will cry like little babys. But that's what they were taught and they really don't know any better.

Who can run around this town these days. It might take you the whole day to check every book with all the people that live here now. Place is a sh*thole these days.

You can't take a laptop into Vegas books. The Nevada state law will not allow them, nor will they allow cell phones in sportsbooks. You'll get a warning for the phone, and eventually get booted. Laptop I've never even seen anyone attempt. Your best bet is to talk on your phone just outside the sportsbook to a friend who is checking pinny, then walk into the book after you get the info you need and fire away.

Technincally laptops and cell phones are not illegal. It is the use of them as a two-way communication device. If you are typing your college thesis on your laptop it is technically permissible. Heavy-handed security and the pain of people trying to get around the law make it so it is just easier to say they are not allowed.

I thought that Vegas has the offshore lines on their screens so they can spot any "smart money" moves! It would seem to me that they would.

They are not allowed to watch off-shore books, but some still do. They also get the steam plays without needing to see the off-shores move.

The difference is they will take bets sometimes before moving their lines if they need the action. They will limit you if you only try to bet those games and will toss you if that's the ONLY bets you make.

But it looks like Vegas could careless what is bet off-shore these days and only move if forced to move their lines. They are bookmaking the safe and right way even more than the off-shores now.

Dr.,
I disagree with your assessment that Vegas books want equal action. That is totally false. They want the public on the wrong side.
