Figured this is a good time to ask this question as things are slow for the all-star break.

Hitting my irons fine with no slice, but my drives off the tee box and woods from the fairways are slicing terribly.

Im sure some of you avid golfers out there know a few tidbits and tricks that you can share to literally help straighten things out.

Thanks in advance.

Take a few lessons from a Pro...Better than beating you brains out trying to figure it out...Because once you fix your slice you may need to fix something else

Stand closer
Follow through
Slow swing down

If those dont work, aim 50yds left of the fairway and play the slice.

Taking lessons from a pro is the best advice ever. Too many amateur golfers spend time on the range with no guidance trying to fix a problem, or spend too much money on new gadgets/clubs when the problem can be fixed, or made better by a teaching pro.

G. Money is correct, spend some money and take some lessons but also get a copy of:

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.

There is a chapter on grip that will go a long way in turning a slice into a draw all by itself. Written years ago it still is the bible for learning how to swing a golf club.

You can by it online at Amazon.com

Definitely get lessons.
But if you're too cheap, make sure the ball is aligned on the inside of your front foot and make sure the clubhead is square at impact.

Book first, lessons second. Usually a slice with the woods indicates you are standing bit too far away, causing your clubhead meets (swipe) the ball on a flatter plane than it should. Close up your stance, step up an inch or two when you address the ball, and focus on following thru fully. Turn that upper body and belt buckle to the pin as you watch it fly.

if you are slicing just your driver, leave the driver at home until you learn how to hit it

other than that, just practice coming down from way inside, trying to hook it, until you find a happy medium

Go to the driving range and hit a couple buckets of balls. Make a strong effort to not swing fast (this is presuming you're in alinement) and keep the face of the club in the correct arc. Something else to consider is drive with your three wood (more forgiving) until you can use the one with 90% + accuracy. If you're still slicing, get some lessons quick to stop it (or learn to play it).

Quick tip - learn to grip the club vertically straight.

Do not grip the club to weak (creates slices) or to strong (creates hooks).

A good teaching pro can get you to grip the club correctly in a single lesson. Then go from there with the main tip that "practice parctice and more practice" is what you need to do to correct serious flaws in your swing. Golf is a game for a lifetime and requres never ending fine tuning to stay sharp. I know playing a real round is fun and sometime helpful, however it's the practice range where you can really learn to hit all of your clubs fairly well and more important fairly consistently on target - one club at a time.

When I began palying golf I had a brutal slice but with a lot of work and help from a good teacher I finally learned how to hit my three wood with a little draw on it and before you know it was down to a 8 or 9 handicap. I never had the time or maybe talent to get much better than that unfortunately. I hit a ton of range balls just to get to a 9 handicap, no matter what you hear golf is not an easy game to even get decent at - never mind good..

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I still cant stop laughing at "Aim to the left 50 yards...", because I was forced to do this last time out. We usually play for money everytime out, and had the choice of playing the slice EXTREMELY left and losing about 50 yards distance or ending up O.B in another fairway.

Going to try and use some of these tips at the range tonight if i go, will let everyone know how it turned out.

2 Replies from Wil in one thread, I am truly honored. Thanks.

I'm serious, try the vaseline one time and you will be amazed...learned it from Dewey Tomko, the poker player...try it with your regular foursome...:lolBIG:

You've got to swing out at the ball as if you wanted to hit a tennis ball with top spin.

Move your right hand grip slightly to the right...if it's over too far to the left you're apt to slice.

Ok fellas, I'm off to the range.

Going to try a variety of things:

1.Move grip to the right.
2.Slow swing down
3.Move closer to the ball
4.Who knows

Oh, and I've got my jar of vaseline ready.

Will report back later...stay tuned.

Shorten your backswing off the tee, like to 3/4 swing.

A shorter backswing allows you to not have to turn your wrists as much, and you will keep the clubface more square at impact.

I promise this will work, although you will lose a little distance.

Aim more to the Left, then when it hits the fairway call it a fade instead of a slice.
