I am trying to apply for some jobs, but I need a good cover letter. I don't want the same old cover letter that everyone normally writes. I need to make it stand out in some way. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Research the companies you're applying for, make the cover letter specific to that application, showing you know and understand the companies, the role etc..

tailor them as best you can, keep it to one page max. NO TYPOS, double spaces between words, single spaces after periods. I don't even read them if there are errors in them.

Are you moving or looking locally?

If you have a myspace page, shut it down. I always look and would disregard someone who had one. Also, make sure you don't have a stupid email address (i.e., ibangchicks@yahoo.com).

One page and one page resume.

If you send me more than one page for either unless you've won a nobel prize and published over 200 articles..., it goes in the trash unread.

I've also said it before and started a debate - I don't care, but some people do... Don't use a free email address...

I'd say one page is too much, especially since they'll be pouring over your resume following the cover letter. Few paragraphs, write about how your particular skills are aligned with the job that you're applying for, how some of your prior experiences helped prepare you for such a position, etc, but be concise and direct.

And if possible address the cover letter to a specific person, if you can find out who's going to read it then you can make the letter even more personal.

One page as in on one piece of paper, not suggesting you fill the whole damn thing. By the time you address it, date it and put a signature block you only have two paragraphs to work with.

Best interview/resume/cover letter advice I've ever gotten:

Always remember you are shopping THEM as much as you are selling yourself. When you keep in mind (without being cocky) that you are a potential asset to their company, that confidence comes through every step of the way.

Only one catch -- you have to actually believe you are a potentially valuable asset. Similar to confidence, fraudulance is easily spotted.

I'm sure someone will disagree, but when I'm staring at a pile of 100 resumes, the cover page doesn't even get a glance. Straight to the pertinent info in the resume & on the next one.

It will pay off to have a resume and a cover letter done for you.

I used monsters writing services. They created a cover letter, resume, and a resume that is in the scannable format.

Most bigger employers have a software that scans for keywords. Professional resume writers can give you an edge.

If you get my email from a mod. I will send you an example of what they did for me.

Agreed, for the most part. When applying for a job likely to have many, many candidate, then yes, cover letter is pointless IMO.

If applying for a job with very few applicants, it can make the difference though...

Also, keep your resume to 2 pages-if not one. Based on the one's I've seen, cutting it down to 1 just to do so can make it look mighty thin.

Plan on 2 pages, and use as much of it as possible to highlight your accomplishments & try to give the reader a good grasp of past work-especially that which was in the same field.

DON"T send in an 8 page diary of your life & then throw a cover page on top of it. I didn't make that up-I got one 2 weeks ago :missingte
