Game: Oakland Athletics at Minnesota Twins
Jul 12 2007 8:10PM
Prediction: Oakland Athletics
Reason: Oakland w/Gaudin over Minnesota w/Baker:
Athletics send Chad Gaudin up against Scott Baker and the Twins tonight knowing Oakland is 13-5 in his team starts this season. With Baker in off an 'inside-out' win (5 innings, 9 hits, 7 runs) in his last start, look for the A's to get the win here this evening.

Game: Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners
Jul 12 2007 10:05PM
Prediction: under
Reason: Both pitchers come off excellent outings. Hernandez held Oakland to only two hits through eight shutout innings in his last start. Meanwhile, Miller allowed only one run through seven innings in his last start. Miller has seen all four of his home starts finish above the number but the UNDER is 2-0 in his two road starts. Hernandez has seen each of his last two starts fall well beneath the total. Consider a play on the UNDER.

Game: Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox
Jul 12 2007 7:05PM
Prediction: over
Tim Wakefield will get the start for Terry Francona's Red Sox, and he has been up-and-down this season. Overall, the veteran knuckleballer has a 4.39 ERA, but he has not pitched well over his last 10 starts. The Blue Jays will counter with Roy Halladay. Halladay also is having an up-and-down season, and his 4.46 ERA is definitely one of his worst in his stellar career. But Toronto has scored runs for him, as evidenced by his 10-3 record. Last Friday, Halladay surrendered five runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, yet Toronto prevailed 8-6 over Cleveland. Halladay has struggled vs. Boston in his career (4.67 ERA), and has a 5.31 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox this season. Take the 'over'. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.

Detroit (+130) at SEATTLE
We see no reason why we shouldn't take the plus money with Detroit tonight in Seattle, as the Tigers really amped it up a notch just before the break sweeping Boston in the Motor City.
The Tigers enter Safeco riding a 5-game winning streak, and they are a very respectable 27-15 on the road this year. Seattle has been a surprise team this year, but we doubt they will be able to put up their dukes against last year's AL champion tonight.
Detroit has won 2 of the first 3 meetings against Seattle this year, and they did go 5-1 at Safeco Field last year.
Felix Hernandez has been throwing well of late, but so has Andrew Miller, and we are not going to pass up this chance to get Detroit in the underdog role.
Play on the Tigers.

Yankees (-145) at TAMPA BAY
James Shields owns Tampa's only win in their last 14 games, and in that one he did allow 4 runs to score in 8 innings of work. I don't see the Rays slowing the Yankees down tonight, as New York needs to get out of the gate strong, and they did go 6-3 at Tropicana Field last season.
The Devils Rays are 3-1 in this year's season series, but they went to the break in terrible form, and New York is starting to show signs of life taking 5 of 7 before the midsummer classic.
Andy Pettite has been terrible his last 2 times to the mound, but his road ERA is almost 2 1/2 runs lower than it is in New York.
James Shields made 3 starts against the Yankees last year, going 0-2 while allowing 12 runs in 19 innings of work.
With Tampa playing so bad, and New York needing wins at an alarming clip, the G-Man says to go ahead and lay the road chalk tonight with the desperate Yankees.

Alright NY!!! You want respect?? You want to chisel away at the Red Sox 10-game lead? You want back in the race? Then be sure to pack your sticks with you to Tampa, and kick the ever living you know what out of this Rays club like you know you should. Salaries aside, the Yankees should smear this Tampa club with the talent they have littered throughout their roster. Tampa is a woeful 1-13 overall their L/14 ballgames, and they own what could possibly be the worst bullpen the big leagues has ever seen. Now, this Shields kid has been a very nice story for Tampa this season, but he's shown signs of regression over the last month of play and I'm chalking that up to the amount of innings he threw early trying to keep the ball out of the pens hands'. Sure, Pettitte has been downright awful this year, but he's always put forth good numbers in the second half of the season and he's 11-1 with a 3.29 ERA in his career vs. the Devil Rays. Those are some pretty gaudy numbers if you ask me, and it almost makes it laughable to think the Yanks are this cheap in this spot. That being said, they're still the Yankees and they for some reason love to underachieve. However, the second half of the season is a fresh start fro this veteran ballclub, and I foresee them making hay over the next couple weeks with series' against Tampa, Toronto, and KC on the horizon. Look for a rejuvenated Yankees club to get off on the right foot tonight as they take it to Shields and the Rays like they've done so many times before in the past.

Game: Toronto at Boston (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Toronto +105
The Blue Jays have a 49-18, 73.1% record whenever Roy Halladay takes the mound. It is unusual to see him as an underdog, as since the 2005 season, this will be just the fifth time. The Jays are 4-0 in those games! Tim Wakefield has not been pitching well. Wakefield had a 1.79 ERA in his first seven starts and has since made 10 starts to a 6.34 ERA. The Red Sox limped into the break losing three straight and have had offensive problems that have been on-going since June. We will take the dog with the pedigree in this one.

Detroit was rolling before the break, winning five straight games, and let's look for that to continue tonight as they go to Seattle to open the second half of the season.
The Tigers made the World Series last season and it looks like they are starting to play like AL champs again, sweeping the Red Sox three games just before the All-Star break. Detroit has won 14 of its last 19 games and have won seven straight on the road and have baseball's best road mark at 27-15.
Andrew Miller (4-2, 3.31 ERA) is on the mound for the Tigers and he is coming off an outstanding effort Friday against the Red Sox. he allowed one run on three hits over seven innings in a 9-2 victory. And he seems to get great offensive support as Detroit has scored 51 runs in his six starts this season.
Felix Hernandez (5-4, 3.72 ERA) pitches for Seattle and he is 0-2 in his career against Detroit. The Mariners were one of the suprise squads of the first half, but expect them to fade in the second half. They just don't have the talent to compete in the loaded American League.
Play Detroit to start the second half right with a win in this one.
