At this week’s John Deere Classic, take Zach Johnson (14-1), 1/6 unit in the outright: Illinois is as close to Iowa as Johnson is going to get this year on Tour, geographically. The PGA Championship is in Oklahoma, which is two states away from Illinois by stretch, but the Memorial in Ohio was closer in terms of mileage. Point is, Johnson’s done real well this year with two wins. He’s coming off a MC at The Travelers but he’s the best short bet this week. Take Anthony Kim (25-1), 1/6 unit: Four top-10s and nine top-25s, this guy’s having what will be a breakout year if he can win. A birdie machine, he just needs to make more putts. Take Carl Pettersson (33-1), 1/6 unit: He got off to a slow start but he’s coming off T17 and T15 at the U.S. Open and Travelers, respectively.Pettersson’s sort of the definition of workmanlike, but he’s managed a win in each of the last two years.

Game: Oakland Athletics at Minnesota Twins
Jul 12 2007 8:10PM

Prediction: Oakland Athletics

Reason: Oakland w/Gaudin over Minnesota w/Baker:
Athletics send Chad Gaudin up against Scott Baker and the Twins tonight knowing Oakland is 13-5 in his team starts this season. With Baker in off an 'inside-out' win (5 innings, 9 hits, 7 runs) in his last start, look for the A's to get the win here this evening.

Detroit +122 (listing Miller and Hernandez)

Hernandez runs into a lineup that is just too good here tonight. He is just 2-11 against the money line vs. AL teams scoring 5.2 or more runs/game in the second half of the season over the last 3 seasons. The Tigers entered the All-Star break on a red hot 5-game winning streak. Detroit is 21-8 against the money line in road games after 3 or more consecutive wins over the last 2 seasons. Take the Tigers as they stay hot tonight

Play: Oakland Athletics

Ai Simulator 3* graded play on Oakland – Seems this is that time of year again for that huge winning A's run. A's are at 44-44 and 9 games out of the Al West and are 8 games out in the Wild Card. That is a whole lot of ground to cover, but it is quite possible for this team to achieve that goal. They arguably have the best starting rotation in the AL, but they must get the bats going as well. Oakland has scored just 380 runs ranking 13th in the AL ranks. Only the CWS are worse and Detroit leads with 580 runs scored. Despite this anemic offense the A's are at 500 and I think if they simply get an average of 3+ more hits per game they will make a great run at the Wild Card. Minnesota bats 268, which matches the AL average and were not hitting well coming into the break. OAKLAND is 22-10 (+15.9 Units) against the money line in road games after batting .240 or worse over a 10 game span over the last 2 seasons. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 34-16 and has made 25.2 units since 1997. Play on all underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 with a starting pitcher whose winning percentage is better than 70%, playing on Thursday. GAUDIN is 6-0 (+6.7 Units) against the money line vs. poor power teams averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game this season. (Team's Record)

HONDO

July 12, 2007 -- Bill Smith showed Hondo and everyone else why he's known as Harness Racing's Guru To The Stars last night when he nailed the eighth race at the Big M with Hard Shoe Hannah ($7.80).

The glorious victory not only offset an earlier loss with Cut Loose Hanover but also negated the annual dismal effort by Anthony Affrunti. The Post's Puny Pony Picker (if the diet works) came up thin at Bel mont with an exacta-box bust of Higher Incentive, Ap pealing Mystery and Inca is Calling in the fifth.

So here's the math: Plus 35 for the day and a re duced deficit of 340 abbatiellos.

Tonight, he'll get busy again with baseball - 10 units apiece on the Reds, Blue Jays and Orioles.

NY Yankees -138 (listin Pettitte and Shields)

Pettitte is 11-1 when starting against Tampa Bay with an ERA of 3.29 in his last 17 starts. We couldn't have found a better pitcher to go against the Rays with here tonight. Shields is yet to beat the Yanks in 3 tries in his career and has been roughed up pretty good as evidenced by his 5.68 ERA. Tampa Bay is ice cold right now and playing below .500 ball against lefty starters and at home. We'll take the Yankees who looked solid heading into the break winning 5 of their last 7.

Game: Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox
Jul 12 2007 7:05PM

Prediction: over

Tim Wakefield will get the start for Terry Francona's Red Sox, and he has been up-and-down this season. Overall, the veteran knuckleballer has a 4.39 ERA, but he has not pitched well over his last 10 starts. The Blue Jays will counter with Roy Halladay. Halladay also is having an up-and-down season, and his 4.46 ERA is definitely one of his worst in his stellar career. But Toronto has scored runs for him, as evidenced by his 10-3 record. Last Friday, Halladay surrendered five runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, yet Toronto prevailed 8-6 over Cleveland. Halladay has struggled vs. Boston in his career (4.67 ERA), and has a 5.31 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox this season. Take the 'over'. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.

New York's (L) Andy Pettitte

New York Yankees (42-43) at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (34-53)
(L) Andy Pettitte (4-6) vs. (R) James Shields (7-4)

Tampa Bay sends James Shields (7-4, 3.82 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander allowed four runs over 7 2/3 innings in a 6-5 victory against Kansas City on Friday. He has lost four of his last five starts and is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees.

New York counters with Andy Pettitte (4-6, 4.25). The left-hander allowed eight runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings in a 14-9 win against the Angels on Friday. Pettitte is 11-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 18 career games, including 17 starts against the Devil Rays.

New York is 5-2 in their last 7 games.
New York is 1-7 in their last 8 games on the road.
Tampa Bay is 1-13 in its last 14 games.
Tampa Bay is 1-4 in its last 5 games at home.
Over is 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings.

The Yankees have been tormented by the lifeless Devil Rays. New York has lost five of their last six battles with Tampa Bay and four of the last five in Tampa. However, the Devil Rays struggles continue, they have lost 13 of its last 14 and will be facing lefty Andy Pettitte tonight, who is 11-1 in 18 career games against them. The Yankees have won ten of Petite’s last 12 starts versus the Devil Rays and six of his last 7 on the road. Take the Yankees.

Oddsmakers:
New York as a -150 road favorite with the total listed at 9½ 'over'.

WUNDERDOG

Game: Toronto at Boston (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Toronto +105

The Blue Jays have a 49-18, 73.1% record whenever Roy Halladay takes the mound. It is unusual to see him as an underdog, as since the 2005 season, this will be just the fifth time. The Jays are 4-0 in those games! Tim Wakefield has not been pitching well. Wakefield had a 1.79 ERA in his first seven starts and has since made 10 starts to a 6.34 ERA. The Red Sox limped into the break losing three straight and have had offensive problems that have been on-going since June. We will take the dog with the pedigree in this one

Blue Jays, Red Sox to go Under 9.5 (-120)
While both Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays and Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox have been erratic, we believe that both hurlers will keep the opposing batters relatively quiet tonight.
Wakefield has always been streaky, and his knuckleball has given the Blue Jays fits in the past. In fact, he has allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his last nine career starts against Toronto, and he is a perfect three for three in Quality Starts against them this season, allowing just four earned runs in 20 innings. In fact, the Under is 8-0-1 in those last nine career starts, including 3-0 this season.
Now Halladay has been a disappointment, but do not forget that he is a former Cy Young winner, and maybe the extra day or rest he is getting here may be just what he needs to get back on track. The Blue Jays are still 7-3 as a team in his last 10 career starts vs. the Red Sox, and he has had success here in Fenway Park in the past.
Finally, the Under is now 11-4 in the last 15 head-to-head meetings between these clubs, and we look for that pattern to continue tonight.
Blue Jays, Red Sox Under 9.5 (-120)

Minnesota Twins (-120)
Thu Jul 12 '07 8:10p
Twins & Baker -120 to cool off Gaudin, A’s
Chad Gaudin of the Oakland Athletics shocked the baseball world by posting a 2.88 ERA over the first half of the season, while Scott Baker was at 5.71.
Truth be told though, these pitchers are really not that far apart in terms of ability. In fact, you may be surprised to know that they current have an identical 1.37 WHIP despite the huge disparity in ERA. Yes Baker was shelled in his last start despite getting the win in that wild 20-14 game against the White Sox last week, but he had allowed two runs or less in each of his previous three starts against some good lineups (Detroit, Mets, Toronto). He also allowed just three runs and five hits in his only career appearance against the Athletics. The bottom line is that we are actually high on Baker, despite the few shellackings he has absorbed to skew his ERA somewhat.
Now Gaudin has been outstanding no doubt, but can he keep this up in the second half? After all, it is not as if he is a youngster, and he has never demonstrated this kind of ability before at any level. Now it could very well be that Gaudin has matured to the point where he really is as good as he has looked, but we still have our doubts and will fade him his first few starts after the break to see if he comes back down to earth. If he continues to pitch at his insane first-half level, so be it and we will tip our hat to him.
Finally the Twins are 5-1 in the last six regular season meetings between these clubs here in Minnesota, and the Twins have gone 7-1 the last eight times they were favored while Oakland is 3-7 as an underdog, so we will lay the small price at home here.

This is a nice spot to cash a total full of value because of some misleading numbers from today\'s starters. The White Sox John Garland saw his overall ERA go from 3.27 to 3.92 in one fell swoop after giving up 12 runs in 3+ innings of 20-14 shellacking in Twin double-header. The WSox are 10-5 under in His 15 starts and 13-6 under as a road dog of less than 25 cents. Jeremy Guthrie is 3-2 with stingy 2.16 ERA in his 13 starts, the O\'s 9-4 to the the under. Chuck Franklin

Believe me, the Yankees are happy to be facing the Devil Rays right now. Heading into the all star break they were surging, having won five of their last seven games. They are looking to make a charge toward post-season play in this second half, and getting to play the worst team in the league fresh off the mid-season break is lucky for them, as they should roll right through this series and improve on their less than .500 record.
Starting for the Yankees tonight is lefty Andy Pettitte. I know he's not having his best season but his career record vs. the Devil Rays is a very impressive 11-1. Starting for this lowly Tampa Bay team is James Shields. He has a losing career record vs. the Yankees and has lost four of his last five starts. The Devil Rays have been losers at home, against left-handers, and as underdogs, and with all of these situations presenting themselves in this match-up, I see no reason to believe they will have any success tonight. Take the Yankees in an easy win in Tampa Bay.

3? NY YANKEES

Michael Cannon

Take the Reds at a nice plus return tonight over the Mets.

Cincinnati headed into the All-Star break as the hottest team in the National League, having won four straight under interim manager Pete Mackanin.
They are turning it around thanks in large part to better pitching. The Reds have posted a 3.70 team ERA and .237 opponent batting average since Mackanin took over for the fired Jerry Narron on July 3.
The Reds will turn to Bronson Arroyo tonight and he's coming off his first win in nearly two months. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.40 career ERA against the Mets, with both wins being complete games at Shea.
Orlando Hernandez will start for the Mets and he's coming off one of his worst starts of the season. El Duque was pounded for six runs and six hits, and tied a career high with six walks in four innings of a 17-7 loss to the Rockies.
Hernandez lost both of his only career starts against the Reds last season, posting a 7.11 ERA.
Take the Reds at a nice plus return as they resume their hot streak to start the second half of the season.

Tigers/Mariners Over 8.5

Felix and Miller both have not pitched decent back to back starts at all this year. Tigers have won 5 straight and they are swinging their bats well and these teams as mentioned in the research are essentially even when it comes to their records and getting a 8.5 total on a tigers game is tough to pass up for a few reasons including the tigers offense, the tigers questionable bullpen late and I remember when Miller struggled against Moyer and the phillies earlier this year. Felix is a great talent, but this is a fade off his great start at Oakland as the Tigers can hit any pitcher in the league and if Felix/Verlander can go to 10 last year, I will take my chances with Felix/Miller to over 8.5. The last 4 meetings between these 2 have gone over, the over is 21-7-2 overall when the total is set around this mark for the tigers and the over is 8-3 in Mariners last 11 home games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.

Tigers/Mariners Under 8.5

(List Miller and Hernandez)

Andrew Miller has really shined in is rookie season for the Tigers. He is 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA. He will have great success in a pitcher’s ballpark in Seattle tonight. Felix Hernandez is a standout pitcher for the Mariners and has stepped up his game recently. Hernandez has just a 2.91 ERA over his last 3 starts. The Under is 37-15-1 in Tigers last 53 games as an underdog of +110 to +150. The Under is 4-0 in Tigers last 4 games following an off day. The Under is 4-0 in Hernandez's last 4 starts with the total set at 7.0-8.5 and 5-1 in Hernandez’ last 6 starts overall. The Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between the Tigers and Mariners in Seattle. Take the Under Thursday.

Detroit (+130) at SEATTLE

We see no reason why we shouldn't take the plus money with Detroit tonight in Seattle, as the Tigers really amped it up a notch just before the break sweeping Boston in the Motor City.
The Tigers enter Safeco riding a 5-game winning streak, and they are a very respectable 27-15 on the road this year. Seattle has been a surprise team this year, but we doubt they will be able to put up their dukes against last year's AL champion tonight.
Detroit has won 2 of the first 3 meetings against Seattle this year, and they did go 5-1 at Safeco Field last year.
Felix Hernandez has been throwing well of late, but so has Andrew Miller, and we are not going to pass up this chance to get Detroit in the underdog role.

Play on the Tigers.

Teddy Covers: UNDER Chicago @ Baltimore (Garland vs. Guthrie)

I’m always looking to bet Unders immediately following the All Star break. The extended layoff tends to affect hitters more than pitchers, taking the offense out of it’s mid-season rhythm. This game provides a stellar Under opportunity coming out of the break, with a pair of impressive hurlers on the mound at Camden Yards this evening.

Baltimore’s Jeremy Guthrie has quietly thrown eleven quality starts in his last twelve outings. His lone non-quality start during that span was when he gave up four runs (in eight full innings of work, mind you) for the first time all year in a start against the Angels. Guthrie is 9-4 to the Under in his 13 starts, an under-the-radar gem for those who have supported him. And Guthrie consistently lasts seven or more innings, reducing the potential effect of the suspect Orioles bullpen behind him.

Jon Garland is an easy pitcher to support on this particular trip to the mound. Garland is coming off his worst outing of the season, bombed for eleven runs in 3.1 innings of work against the Twins prior to the break. Garland, following the game: “The result was absolutely terrible. I'm embarrassed by it. It shouldn't happen.” Considering the fact that Garland had allowed only nine earned runs in his previous six starts, we can expect a bounceback performance tonight, keeping this game well Under the total.

Recommendation: Take the Under 8.5

CWS (+120)

Analysis: CWS: RHP Jon Garland (6-6, 3.92 ERA) vs. BAL: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (4-2, 2.74 ERA)

Both these teams are in the midst of disappointing seasons, especially the White Sox, who were expected to compete in the AL Central but find themselves in jeopardy of falling into last place due to an appalling lack of offense (.240 team BA. lowest in the majors). In 2006, the White Sox took seven players to Pittsburgh for the All-Star festivities. With just one representative in San Francisco this season, they should be a little more rested heading into Thursday's series opener with the Orioles. Tonights starting pitcher, Jon Garland, was an All-Star in 2006, but could not put up the numbers in 2007 for a repeat trip. Garland got crushed in his last outing before the All-Star break, the latest meltdown in what has been a fairly inconsistent season for the right-handed sinker baller. With that being said, there is probably no other pitcher in the league that wants to take the mound more than Garland, to avenge his embarrassment last week when he got rocked giving up 12 runs (11 earned) in 3 1/3 innings against the Twins. Nevertheless, he comes into tonight dominating left-handed hitters, is one of the hardest pitchers to steal against, and his ability to keep the ball down will negate the greatest assets the Orioles lineup. He should find success against an Orioles lineup that is just 10-12 in home/night contests against right-handed pitching where they are averaging just 3.8 runs per game. His counterpart, right-hander Jeremy Guthrie will be making his 14th start this season and his first of the year against the White Sox. From a purely statistical standpoint Guthrie looks like the better pitcher, but an in-depth analysis of his numbers this season do however show a regression toward mediocrity. Thats not good news for a Baltmore club already without their star slugger Miguel Tejada and one that has to take on a White Sox team that is actually profitable in tonight setting (away/night games against right-handed pitching) where they have won their backers +$435. Its actually their only profitable situation this season. With the Sox bats beginning to come alivethey look like a very attractive underdog tonight. Again though, with so few games scheduled for tonight and a whole bunch of games to shoes from this weekend, were going to take it easy and only go for just a unit.

BIG AL

NY Mets -- At 7:10 pm, our selection is on the NY Mets over Cincinnati. The Reds have won 4 in a row, but that streak should come to an end tonight at Shea Stadium. Bronson Arroyo will get the start for Pete Mackanin's Reds, and he won his last outing, 6-3, over San Francisco. But prior to that victory, Arroyo went 10 straight starts without a win (0-7, 6.55 ERA). And for the season, Arroyo's allowed 67 runs and 127 hits for a 4.84 ERA, and a 3-9 overall record. That won't get the job done against the Mets, who have a strong offensive ballclub. Also, New York will start El Duque Hernandez tonight, and all he's done is compile a 3.22 ERA this season. Take the Mets.

Orioles -- At 7:05 pm, our selection is on the Baltimore Orioles over Chicago. Like the Reds, Chicago got hot right before the All-Star Break, winning 10 of its last 15 games. But prior to that streak, the Pale Hose had dropped 22 of 27 games. The main reason, of course, for Chicago's lackluster season has been its offense. The White Sox rank last in the American League with 354 runs scored, and rank last in all of baseball with a .241 batting average. Jeremy Guthrie has been super for the Birds all season, going 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA. His ERA ranks second in the American League, and he should dominate the weak-hitting White Sox tonight. Jon Garland has struggled at Camden Yards (15.75 career ERA), and is coming off a horrific outing vs. the Twins (11 runs in 3 1/3 innings). Take Baltimore.

Yankees/D-Rays 'over' -- At 7:10 pm our selection is on the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays 'over' the total. If New York is to turn things around in the second half, it will have to start tonight against a team which has been a real thorn in its side lately -- the last-place Devil Rays. Tampa is 3-1 already this season against New York and 4-2 in the last six games played between these two dating back to last September. Tonight's Yankee pitcher, lefthander Andy Pettitte ended the first half with absolutely dreadful performances at home against the A's and Angels in which he gave up fifteen earned runs in just 6 2/3 innings. Pettitte has given up six or more ER in three of his last four starts. Tampa will start righthander James Shields. Shields has remarkable control as he has only walked 19 batters all season in his 18 starts covering almost 130 innings. But he has never beaten the Yankees despite three starts against them last season. He gave up four earned runs in each of those starts. This will not be an easy assignment for either Shields or Pettitte with the Yankees hitting righthanders much better than southpaws (by almost 20 points) and the D-Rays doing the opposite (they hit 23 points higher vs. lefties). Also, Tampa's bullpen has been horrific over the last few games, and the over is 38-18-2 in the Yanks' last 58 on Astroturf. Look for a high-scoring game tonight. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

6* Widow Wiseguy AL East Steal of the Year on Boston -114
(List Wakefield)

Boston is rarely a small underdog at home and we will take advantage of it today. This is an absolute steal with Tim Wakefield on the mound. Wakefield actually has a better ERA on the season than Roy Halladay from Toronto. Halladay has a 6.27 ERA over his last 3 starts and is in line to get thumped by a tough Boston line-up today. The Red Sox are 7-2 in Wakefields last 9 starts against Toronto. The Blue Jays are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a right-handed starter. Toronto wont know what to do against the knuckle ball today. The Red Sox are 4-0 in Wakefield's last 4 home starts and 7-1 in their last 8 games following an off day. Take Wakefield and his recent success against Toronto in this one. Take the Red Sox.

4* MAJOR on NY Yankees -138
(List Pettite)

Andy Pettite has absolutely owned this Tampa Bay squad as a starter for the New York Yankees. The Yankees are 10-2 in Pettites last 12 starts against the Devil Rays. The Yankees got hot right before the All-Star break and we look for them to make a second half run starting today. Tampa Bay has won their last 3 meetings with New York, so you can bet the Yankees have revenge on their minds today. The Yankees are 40-16 in Pettitte's last 56 starts during game 1 of a series. The Yankees are 5-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. The Devil Rays are 1-7 in Shields' last 8 starts when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in their previous game. The Yankees are 6-1 in Pettites last 7 road starts against he Devil Rays. Take New York.

1* on Tigers/Mariners Under 8.5
(List Miller and Hernandez)

Andrew Miller has really shined in is rookie season for the Tigers. He is 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA. He will have great success in a pitchers ballpark in Seattle tonight. The Under is 4-0 in Hernandez's last 4 starts with the total set at 7.0-8.5 and 5-1 in Hernandez last 6 starts overall. The Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between the Tigers and Mariners in Seattle. Take the Under Thursday.

Larry Cook

7* MAJOR on Baltimore -120
(Listing Guthrie)

Jeremy Guthrie has overachieved all season for Baltimore. He will have no problem shutting down the ALs worst offensive team in the Chicago White Sox today. Guthrie is 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA and a tremendous 0.91 WHIP. Jon Garland gave up 11 earned runs in just 3.1 innings in his last outing. He has lost it this season. The White Sox are 1-9 in Garland's last 10 starts after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game. Chicago just cant seem to string a couple solid offensive performances together. The Orioles have bounced back nicely lately and are 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss. Bet the Orioles behind Guthrie today.

10* InfoPlay NL Second Half Blowout on NY Mets -161
(Listing Hernandez and Arroyo)

Bronson Arroyo has never been the same since pitching for Boston. The All-Star break wont change anything either when Arroyo faces one of the toughest line-ups in all of baseball. Arroyo is 3-9 with a 4.84 ERA on the season. Orlando Hernandez is pitching like hes in his prime despite his age. Hernandez has a 3.22 ERA with just a 1.14 WHIP on the season. The Reds are 0-8 in Arroyo's last 8 starts as a road underdog and 1-10 in Arroyos last 11 road starts overall. The Mets are 5-0 in Hernandez's last 5 Thursday starts and 4-1 in Hernandez last 5 starts with at least 7 days of rest. This rest will help the elder veteran pitch one of his best outings of the season against Cincinnati tonight. Bet the New York Mets in a blowout.

3* on Oakland +106
(Listing Gaudin)

Chad Gaudin is one of the most underrated pithers on his team, if not in all of baseball. Gaudin is 8-3 with a 2.88 ERA on the year. He takes on Scott Baker for the Twins and his ridiculously high 5.71 ERA. Oakland hitters should have a field day against Baker tonight. Oakland uses their rest well in recent years. The As are 24-8 in their last 32 games following at least one day off. The Athletics are 10-2 in Gaudin's last 12 starts. The Athletics are 7-0 in Gaudin's last 7 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Twins are 0-5 in Baker's last 5 starts vs. American League West opponents. Bet Oakland as a solid underdog today.

S. Nover - (Opinion Play)
<HR style="COLOR: #a8a8a8" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Pick: Seattle Mariners

REASON FOR PICK: We know how good defending American League champion Detroit is. But Seattle quietly is on a 93-win pace.

The Mariners have won 12 of their past 15 games. They are 16-5 in their last 21 home games. They have a strong edge here in the pitching matchup - both with starting pitchers and in the bullpen.

Detroit rookie southpaw Andrew Miller is making his sixth big-league start and first road start against an American League club. Miller is a top pitching prospect, but hitters are starting to accumulate information about him. He gave up five earned runs to the Twins in five innings during his second-to-last start.

Miller certainly has the talent to pitch effectively here. However, Seattle is 15-7 against left-handers this season, including winning seven of nine against them at Safeco Field.

The major part of this handicap, though, is Mariners starter Felix Hernandez. He now looks like he's back to his earlier "King Felix" form. He's allowed just two earned runs and seven hits in his last two starts, totaling 16 innings.

Hernandez has regained his control and confidence after initially struggling returning from a right elbow strain that landed him on the DL. He pitched eight shuout innings on Saturday during his last start against Oakland, consistently firing in the 96-98 mph range.

"I feel like I have my best command now," Hernandez was quoted as saying following that 4-0 victory against the Athletics. "My fastball is working pretty good, all of my breaking balls are working."

The Mariners also hold a huge bullpen edge. Their relievers haven't allowed a run in the past five games going 11 1/3 innings. They've surrendered just two hits and one walk during this span.

The Tigers' bullpen isn't nearly as efficient because of injuries to their two best setup men and closer Todd Jones is an adventure waiting to happen.

Note: We made a lucrative cash with King Felix vs the A's last week as a M@linsky six star play. Time to ride the rush.

Larry Ness' Thursday Thrasher-MLB (141-70 since Opening Day!)
My Thursday Thrasher is on the Oak A's at 8:10 ET. The A's (48-26) owned MLB's best 2nd-half record LY and the Twins (49-27) owned the 2nd-best mark. The two teams open a four-game series tonight in Minnesota with Chad Gaudin squaring off against Scott Baker. Therein lies the advantage for the A's. The A's own the AL's best team ERA (3.68) and Gaudin has been a HUGE contributor to that mark. All 55 of his appearances last year came out of the bullpen (entered TY with just 10 career starts) but the young right-hander has made 18 starts this year, posting an 8-3 mark with a 2.88 ERA (team is 13-5). His ERA is actually a little better on the road (2.60) and in winning his last two starts before the break, shut down two of MLB's best hitting teams (Yanks and Mariners), holding them to nine hits and just two ERs in 14.2 innings (1.23). Scott Baker did little for Minnesota LY, going 5-8 with a 6.37 ERA in 16 starts (team was 7-9). He allowed 114 hits in just 83.1 innings in '06 and his numbers are not much better in nine starts this year (he's 3-3 with a 5.71 ERA). In four home starts he's allowed 26 hits and 16 ERs in 20 innings, for a 7.20 ERA. It's Gaudin over Baker in BIG way. My Thursday Thrasher is on the Oak A's.

Good Luck...Larry

Larry Ness' 15* AL Game of the Week (141-70 Y-T-D / 68-21 with 15* GOW plays!)
My 15* play is on the Sea Mariners at 10:05 ET. The Red Sox may have ended the first half of the season with MLB's best record but it's the Mariners (plus-$1,899) and the Tigers (plus-$1,247) who were MLB's biggest moneymakers. The Tigers and Mariners open a four-game series tonight in Seattle, with the Tigers taking MLB's best road record at 27-15 (have won seven straight on the road) into the game against a Mariner team that ended the first half on 12-3 run and has won eight straight at home. Detroit owns MLB's best team BA at .290, while Seattle is third at .283. The edge however, goes to the home team tonight. Detroit rookie Andrew Miller is making just his seventh career start and it's been feast or famine for the lefty. He's had three outstanding outings allowing just one ER in 19 innings (0.47) while in his other three starts, has allowed 12 ERs in 16.1 innings for a 6.61 ERA. He's also facing a Seattle team that's 15-7 (plus ($1,065) vs left-handers this year, averaging 5.2 RPG. Looking a little deeper, shows Seattle has averaged 6.2 RPG in six home starts (at night)vs lefties! Felix Hernandez gets the start for Seattle. He was dominating in 12 starts as a rookie in '05 (2.67 ERA and just 61 hits in 84.1 innings with 77 Ks) but struggled LY. He opened '07 by allowing zero ERs and just four hits in his first two starts (17 innings) but then got hurt in his third start. He missed four weeks with a right elbow strain and wasn't all that effective after his May 15 return. However, he's pitched eight innings in three of his last four starts, allowing just 13 hits and two ERs (0.75 ERA) in those outings (the other start was a poor one vs Boston). Hernandez "has his groove back" and the Mariners feast on lefties, making Seattle the play. AL Game of the Week 15* Sea Mariners.

Good Luck...Larry
