figured that in a forum of thousands that there has to be a handful of guys who have experience fishing this 'supposed' hotbed in western new york. i put the 'supposed' in quotes because i just got back from a 2-day mini-trip and had an incredibly difficult time having any success. now im not a world class angler by any stretch but i certainly have a pretty good grasp on all the basic techniques with naturals/artificials. i cant remember the last time ive struggled so much to catch a damn fish. it was unreal. this is supposed to be a phenomenal place to land trophy walleye and muskie. unfortunately, the only enjoyment from the trip came while waterfront dining at some of the nice restaurants in bemus point. the fishing was a total disappointment. just wondering if anyone has any stories or tips about fishing at chautauqua. gracias fellas.

I used to take my boat on that lake over 35 years ago. Sure brings back memories. Never fished there though.

I did some fishing in upstate NY a couple of weeks ago and had the same results. I was told by some locals anglers that the above average water temps have the usual good fishing, not so good and the fish not so active.

Hire a guide for the 1st day of your trip. That will give you a better idea on the proper set up., ie. area, depth, lure type/color, speed of presentation, etc.

Since your an angler, I thought I'd attach a recent photo of the new World Record Rainbow Trout caught in a lake in Saskatchewan. 43.6lbs!!!!

And thats why they play the game.

I have fished there a few times, but mainly for perch and crappie. Caught more than 50 fish.

Also caught a few bass and some walleye, and have never tried for the muskie. Perch walleye and crappie all reall good eatin'.

I am not sure that the heat and this time if year are the best.

That fish is probably a triploid, meaning, it's genetically altered... Regardless, it's a beast. :monsters-

If you read the article, it's apparently a lake that has produced some bery large Bows in the past.

This is a Rainbow I caught last month.

some damn nice catches by hal and largemouth in this thread. nice work fellas. jmo, but a trophy rainbow is the best looking of any freshwater fish. if nothing else, this thread is starting to get some action and hopefully that will lead to some info from guys who have experience at chautauqua. some of the photos ive seen of muskies pulled from lake chautauqua are just nuts.

I'm by no means an expert but living here you hear and see a few things. All fish, especially predators are like squares, they cant say no to something that looks good. Silly American lures are complete killers here and I can only think our normal models would do well in the States. As for Salmon, leave your Lures in a pot of Prawns overnight, it will attract them like the real thing but by the time they get there they will be in a trance. As always, they have to be on the take anyway.
