Story from back in my youth (early to mid 20's). Me and 2 buddies go out drinking one nite. We were just sitting around trying to figure out what to do and we see on celebrity birthday's that it was Barry Sanders birthday so we decide to go out and celebrate it (obviously without him).

We go to a place tha has Long Island Ice Teas, as we think they are on special for $1.99, so we end up getting cut off and the bill comes to the table and the sign that my buddy had read the nite before (he went to eat with GF there) was $7.99. He mistakenly read the 1 and the 7 wrong. Still not sure how a $7.99 LIT is a special. Anyways, there is no way that us guys can scrounge up $100 or so between us (pretty sad I know) so my one buddy puts it on his credit card saving us alot of emabrassment.

We then proceed to the next bar and we are tore up and it is still light out. When we end up running into a few people that we know we tell them it is Barry Sanders birthday. This becomes an ongoing joke all nite (hey when your Lions fan you dont have much to celebrate). I end up hooking up with a girl from high school who I always had a crush on. It was quite the nite. We end up jokingly celebrating it for a few more years before we drift a little apart and grow up.

Worst part is my buddy who thought the LIT's were $1.99 died about 6 years later in a freak accident. I miss him EVERYDAY but I always remeber Barry Sanders birthday is July 16th cause of Dan.
Here's to you Dan:toast:

I always thought/hoped he would come back. After a couple of years I gave up even though he probably could have and still been in the top 5 backs.

You always hear about the next Emmitt Smith or the next Edgerrin James or the next Marshall Faulk coming along. You never hear anyone say "He's the next Barry Sanders" That says enough aout how talented the guy was

Guy would have demolished Emmitt's record if he didn't retire. You know you're a badass when there's a commercial showing a guy tackling you from behind as if it was some sort of unreal feat ( I think it was Jones from the Redskins).

That was an awesome commercial.
Unreal that the guy is 39 today, he was a stud on shit shit team.

imagine him behind the cowboys line. 20,000 yds would now be the record.

Greatest Runner the game has ever seen by far...

Never got a chance to see Walter but they said Walter was the best all around RB the game has ever seen...

But there was no question Barry was the best Pure RUNNER ever... at least I remember him carving up my Bears... Some SICK CUTS

Barry was good to me: It was his rookie season and Fantasy Football was in it's infancy. I drafted him as a rook fairly cheap and it was a type of keeper league where you could keep one player for the next year for $5 or $10 more(I forget which) than what you paid for him. I kept Barry for 3 years and won the Championship twice during that span. Entry fee was $500 and 1st paid $3000. Sweet for me, thanks, Barry.

i think its a dead heat for the best back of the last 25 years.

barry and walter ..

my biggest wish was that bo jackson could have played 10 full years in the nfl.. we would have really seen something then.

Greatest ever? Still got to go with Jim Brown.

Barry Sanders
1. 10 seasons
2. 15,269 rushing yds
3. 153 games played

Jim Brown
1. 9 seasons
2. 12,312 yds rushing
3. 118 games played

Jim Brown still holds the record of 5.2 yards per carry over his career.
I would put Barry Sanders in the top 3 though.

His moves were absolutely sick! What a joy to watch. A little too introverted though. Never seemed to like the attention at all, thus he retired before the media circus wouldve surrounded him about breaking the record.

I think the run against NE , where he had the corner all twisted up running in front of him stands out the most to me...his shoes were left at the 25!

One of the top 3 with Payton and Brown. Definitely a tier between those three guys and the next best RB (Earl Campbell). Cheers Barry

That was in 1997 I believe on Wille "Big Play" Clay, definitely a Sanders highlight moment.
