im puzzled by this. isnt kendall making stupid amounts of money for what he is producing (or not producing) on the field?

they got worse when they dumped barrett to san diego. now (i guess) theyve slightly improved from hill to kendall. but prob at the expense of taking on a big contract.

theyve made two moves at catcher in the last month and have somehow ended up worse than where they were at to start the season imo.

The A's are also including cash in the deal. Bowen was designated for assignment earlier Monday.Chicago has been in need of a catcher since trading Michael Barrett to the Padres on June 21, shortly after a dugout run-in with pitcher Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs have split their catching duties between Bowen, Koyie Hill and Geovany Soto, but that trio has combined for just four hits since the deal.
Kendall, in his third season in Oakland, has two home runs and 12 RBIs for the A's in 2007. His .226 average is the worst mark in his 12 major league seasons.
The Kendall trade indicates the A's will be sellers as the trade deadline approaches. After being swept in four games by the Twins, Oakland is currently 44-48 — 11.5 games out in the AL West and 10.5 out in the wild card race.
At 47-43, the Cubs are just 3.5 games back in the NL Central and three behind the wild card lead.

Why not? Catcher was clearly their weakest position. Assuming this guy is as good as what the cubs have defensively and better offensively, why would a fan not be happy about this move?

ARAMIS (MVP)!!!!!!!!! 3-2 cubs!!!!!!!!!! El Fuego!! Look out national league!

Cubs would be tough in the playoffs with a 4 man rotation of Zambrano, Hill, Lily and Marqui and Marmol is a great reliever to have in the bullpen.

Cubs Win!

Good move. Their catching rotation wasn't even triple-a quality and people knock them for trying to upgrade.

So they traded Barrett and prospects for Kendall. That's what it amounts to. They should've put their problems with Barrett aside and acted like adults.

They got rid of Barrett because he can't catch the ace (not to mention batting .220)...so then they have Bowen/Hill/Soto....WHO WHat and WHY???

Catcher is by far their weakest position so they go get the veteran. If he bats .250 he is far out producing anybody behind the plate they've had this season and all they gave up was Bowen and a minor league Pitcher Jeremy Blevins....(don't know much about Blevins but he's supposedly a top 20 prospect in the cubs system)

I really haven't seen much of Kendall since he's been out West but I remember he was very solid defensively and would throw you out at 2nd. He obviously used to have a solid bat but I believe thats changed a little. He's still gotta be better than what we got. He's probably overpriced...but hell, there's no cap in baseball and they've got the money.

VERDICT....WHAT THE HELL...LOW RISK HIGH REWARD. They really didn't give anything up and bring a NL'er back to the NL to revive the career.

Some crazy posts in this thread.

Brilliant move by Jim Hendry.

People thought he was stupid in 2003 when he got Ramirez and Lofton. Nobody liked them then. I mean Ramirez had hit .234 in 2002. And Lofton was only hitting .277 with Pitt. What was Hendry thinking!? LOL

- Kendall is one of the best pitcher handlers around
- Check out his pre/post AS splits
- Check his AL/NL splits
- He's hitting much better in June and July
- Guy is a .300 career hitter and a high OBP (more BB's than K's)
- Oak people rave about how he calls and manages a game
- He was thrilled to come to the Cubs

Cubs had a collection of backups. Kendall is a gamer, brings a veteran presence and has a huge upside for this season. He does things to help the team win, he can bunt, still runs well for a catcher. He is a winner.

Now don't be surprised if the next move is to acquire Kenny Lofton.

I don't follow baseball? Where does that come from? I watch more baseball than is good for me. I'm a Cardinals fan--i don't like the cubs. I'm well aware of what they've been doing lately.
Haha--lets bring up a scandal that is what 15 years old? When was the last time cubs fans had a reason to cheer? 100+ years?

I don't like it but it but if the Cubbies have the money to spend I guess it's a small upgrade.
