I need to get a new car and I'm wondering about police auctions. I don't know much about cars generally (or police auctions) so I'm thinking it might not be a good idea.

There seem to be a lot of web sites with all the police auction information you need, but they usually charge a fee (around $50) to join them.

Anyone have good or bad experiences buying stuff at police auctions?

Also, anyone out there buy stuff at police auctions and then sell it later? Seems like you could make a living doing this if you know what you're doing.

don't mess with it.if you do you will regret it when something breaks or even just routine maintenance.(this coming from an ex police camaro owner) just a freaking brake job was almost triple the price of a regular car.

these cars are built different than regular cars.find you a used car salesman and pay him 500.00 to go with you to a real auto auction and you will get a sweet deal!

I drove former CHP mustang 5.0's for many years. I got to know everyone at the auction, so I had insiders on the units. In the old days they would hang whatever price on them, and had much lower miles. Now due to costs they run them to 130,000 or more. The desirable Caprice SS, Impala clone were the last nice rear wheel cruiser, the crown vics were also solid. The majority are bought by cab companies, especially mexican cabs, I shit you not. All in all I bought 5 over the years, 2 crown vics, 1 caprice SS, 2 mustang 5.0

They are soild units, built on a better line with heavy duty police parts. The automakers rarely have defects off this line. Having a cop die in a defective unit is really frowned upon, bad pr. Then, maintenance wise they are kept up ahead of schedule. Always PM'd timely. All top of line factory or better parts. They even chipped some. The camaros replaced the 5.0's. Poor move in my opinion. CHP field guys who I talked to, we all hung out at a restaurant a minute from the freeway, all preferred the Caprice, and then the 5.0. Field commanders got no B/W. My first 2, the 5.0's were B/W. They only spray painted the white doors black. Awesome ride, I loved those. Caused a wreck and messed with many of motorists poppin up behind them when they were flying. Had one carb, one fuelie. So good comparison also. The caprice came from factory black cherry. The camaros white.

Get your bluebooks, what you should be paying, and what the asking price is. Know your shit before you show up because others will. Look for a commander's car with stock factory color. Any factory paint is better than the fall off in 2 year quick shot they give it. Also commander cars are donut delivery wagons. They never hit the speed limit. Guys on the highway, patrolmen? Some of those guys burn tires all shift for laughs. Mileges will vary when they pull them off the line. Depends on their policy. Of course the lower the better. Sometimes they will throw a set of tires on it, battery, other fresh stuff.

Do they have a site?

No Reason what so ever to Pay $50 for Info on these Auctions !
They will Post them in your Local Newspaper, or you can just call the Town Hall, State police, etc. to find out when they are holding one of there auctions.

You have to remember that these Cars were more then likely from Drug Raids, or some kind of Crime at one time. Could be part of a " Book " Bust..and part of the deal is that they had to give up there Cars, etc. Most are in Great shape and might just need a little fix here and there.

Know a few guys who bought some before, 2004 BMW $7,200, 2003 JAG for like $9K
I see you are in NJ, I would check NJ,NY & PA. Should find a Lot !

BOL !

Are you looking at buying a retired police car? Or just cars that were seized by law enforcement agencies. Either way, never pay a fee to get info from some 3rd party. Just contact cities and ask them when their next auction is. Some are annually, some monthly. Depends on the size of the municipality and how much storage space is needed.

Sometimes you can get a decent deal at those, but there will be lots of knuckleheads with money there, and while they may not know wholesale values, they sometimes think they do, and you have to bid against them.

Not the best scenario for a screamer deal. imho.

The places that charge the $50 fee are scam sites some what. You can get the same information out of the newspaper

I bought a car from one of their auctions and found a kilo of coke in the trunk. Not only do you get a ride from the car but you also get a ride from the white horse.

Seriously, why would you want to buy a used car that's probably been treated like shit?
