Is there any way to benefit by knowing a pitching change before the books do?

I know the line is moved on a pitching change (for an action bet) and canceled for a "listed" bet. So, does knowing such info help in any way?

If a strong pitcher of a team is going, and you find out he is to be scratched, and you know there are only inferior pitchers to take his place, then by all means take the other team at "action". Then buy back the replacement pitcher when the higher odds are posted.

But what will that get you? Your original bet will have an adjusted line.

There is a rule in the Dominican Sportsbooks where if there is a pitching change, the money line remains the same no matter who the new pitcher is...can get pretty dicey both ways...these walk-up books get plenty of action....some of these books have changed the rule, but the majority have not...

Yes, but only if you know an outfit that books without regard to the pitcher, so the bet stands after a pitching change. As these are a dying breed I'm not into adding coffin nails.

This is interesting (I always used Listed because I had the mindset that "I am paying/getting price based on the assumed pitching matchup").

I always thought that --with an Action bet-- the PURPOSE of allowing an action bet is to just select THE TEAM, rather than the pitcher himself.

So by allowing me to have an Action bet for an away, underdog team playing their 5th pitcher at +180.... it's for the TEAM, not the PITCHER.

Now, if the other team's ace pitcher gets scratched & the other team now plays the 3rd pitcher and the lines are adjusted to +130/-140.... my "Action" bet would now be +130, not +180 even though I picked the same team hours ago? Essentially, the book is now renegading on their honor on an ACTION bet by changing the lines after both me & the book have consented to a valid wager??

Personally, that's ridiculous.

Okay, so help me out here:

With more books bothering to change action bets prices after a pitching change, what's the point of having action bets then? :ughhh:

Let me correct myself--

"what's the point of having action bets if you can't get what you SEE?"

You would be at the whim of the new prices after any pitching change...whether better or for worse, and you wouldn't know.....

Ridiculous, but if you are betting online or in Vegas, this is how it is. Only with a local does it do you any good to have the inside info on a pitching scratch. I knew Simontacchi of the Nationals was scratched for today before it was posted anywhere, which is what led me to my initial post. But I wanted to confirm my opinion that this info does me no good.

Lots of players just want to bet their teams no matter who pitches to watch it on TV....they just want action...they don't want to watch a game if they can,t bet it....hence the term action....

Action gives you the ability to take the team irrespective of the opponent's pitcher. You don't have to play Action or Listed, you can play Listed Home or Listed Visitor only. So, if you are playing NYY (Clemens) v. KC (Meche), there is no real reason to play Listed on KC if you would play NYY irrespective of the KC pitcher. Meche is irrelevant to the play in that situation so you are only concerned with Clemens starting.

One other possible way to make money on it, scalps. Some slow moving books or books that don't post quality lines could get burned shortly after posting the new lines, same w/ locals. That would, however, require you to wait until AFTER the announcement of the change and see if there is a scalp. I have had that happen a couple of times this year.
