Why would someone such as Johnny Chan need backing?

was thinking the same thing. I thought I saw the "Grinder" also on there. Not 100% sure these guys are even affiliated with the site.

You would be surprised at how many of the "well known" players are busted. I don't care if it's wagering on sports, golf, blackjack, craps, prop bets, or whatever, some of these individuals are the biggest degenerate gamblers and suckers in the world. I have witnessed some of this up close and personal over the years. Does Stuey Ungar ring a bell?

During the WSOP, I think it was Gold who kept talking about knowing how to play against the players who "really needed the money". I think your dead on.

It is positive EV for even the best poker players to negotiate a backing deal.

WVU, especially when they sell shares worth 150%. I have seen and heard of this happening many times.

If I had to pick one of those degenerates it would be Andy Black ... I like his game.

Phil Ivey backs the Grinder who has the most lucrative of all backing deals. Grinder gets 75% of the profits, 75/25 is pretty unheard of.

Why would a guy that was player of the year last year (Mizarchi) need a backer unless he is trying to help the backer with his investnments. Maybe it is a coaching thing and he feels having a guy like Ivey on your side is a good thing.

Is this some deal they setup before Mizarchi got big? I can't believe a top 10 money winner last year would need or want any financial backing. Unless he is trying to help the guy who put up the money make some money.

I am sure it is very expensive to play in alot of tounaments but we are talking about guys who are the best of the best and also are supremely confident in their skills. Seems a little odd at the top level (IMO).

It costs a ton of money to play all the tourneys, a bad run and youre out 300k, plus all the expenses, plus Mizrachi has a pit habit. You need to have millions to be properly bankrolled to consistenly play 10k-25ks.

I am more of a pool guy than poker, but I can tell you some people play so much better when staked that it is crazy.

This has scam written all over it. Either they get backed more than 100% and all dump chips to some nobody who is also in on the deal and is probably the best player of the scam team.

The problem with "backing" someone is that the person who you want to back is going to be such a good player that they wouldn't let you back them if you offered to pay all of their losses and only took 10% of the winnings.

Who would want to back someone who loses all of their winnings to sports, craps, bj, or drugs?

This is a trainwreck waiting to happen.

I know what you are saying I just think if a player is selling himself and he is a profitable player in the LONGRUN than he is only selling himself short. Unless he is going to go broke if he doesnt cash in a year (which is sad for a top player) than this is giving away money (IMO).

The smart ones are like Ivey as he is taking advantage of people that cant budget their money so they need a backer. I am talking about well established pros, not up and comers who need it (by the way you need a backer LOL).

With all that said I have always said I think places like Card Player magazine or other places that list lifetime earnings should deduct for entry fees as all this does is hopelessly fool others into thinking EVERYONE is making money playing poker.

Also great job Matt in the ME. Yoy made this place (The RX) a more fun place to be here in the dog days of summer. I bet I told 5 goodfriends of mine that dont go to this site, that I sort of (LOL) knew someone deep into the tournament.
