<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->SCOTT SPREITZER SCOTT'S MLB AFTERNOON DIVISIONAL GAME OF THE MONTH!
(917) DET Tigers vs (918) CHI White Sox
Game Starts at July 24 2007 11:05 EST
Take (917) DET Tigers
Detroit owns a powerful lineup in most situations, including afternoon road games. The Tigers are 8-4 in this spot, scoring an average of 6 RPG. The average run total should be more than enough with Jeremy Bonderman on the hill. The righty has made six starts at U.S. Cellular in his career. He owns a fantastic, 0.99 WHIP with a .205 BAA. When Bonderman takes the bump the Tigers are 7-2 on the road, 13-4 as a favorite, and 5-2 in day action. They've won Bonderman's last six away starts where he's allowed just 15 ER & 42 BR in 37 2/3 IP. That's a 3.58 ERA & 0.98 WHIP. And while <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Detroit</st1:place></st1:City> is 21-11 in day starts, producing eight-units of profit, the Sox are 15-25 in day games, losing 10.6-units. Gavin Floyd is making his second start of the season for the southsiders. He got punished by <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:place></st1:State> and I expect more of the same today. The righty owns a lifetime 7.08 ERA & 1.76 WHIP to go along with a .292 BAA in 25 appearances, including 20 starts. The Tigers are my Afternoon Div. GOM. Thanks! GL! Scott.

SCOTT SPREITZER SCOTT'S TKO BEATDOWN LEADS HIS 2-FOR TUESDAY MLB GUARANTEE!
(909) CHI Cubs vs (910) STL Cardinals
Game Starts at July 24 2007 17:10 EST
Take (909) CHI Cubs
My TKO is a play on the Cubs on Tuesday. Carlos Zambrano hit catcher Michael Barrett so hard, he landed in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:City> as a member of the Padres. Since then, Zambrano has been spectacular. In his last seven outings, the hard-throwing righty owns a 1.49 ERA & 0.89 WHIP. He'll work his magic again, facing a Cardinal lineup that's scoring just 4.1 RPG in 22 home night games against right-handers. Kip Wells counters for the defending champs tonight. The Cards are 3-14 in his 17 starts (1-6 home) this season, losing 12.2-units. They're also 2-8 when he's priced as a dog and 2-9 in his evening starts. With Derek Lee bolstering the Cub lineup with his return, look for Zambrano to get more than enough run-support tonight. The Cubs are my TKO Beatdown on Tuesday. Thanks! GL! Scott.

(927) BOS Red Sox vs (928) CLE Indians
Game Starts at July 24 2007 16:05 EST
Take (928) CLE Indians
My 5* Hammer is a play on the Indians on Tuesday. The Tribe have been outstanding in home night games against righties this season, averaging 6.9 RPG in 24 tries! That's bad news for "Dice-K" who was smacked around Fenway in his only start against <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Cleveland</st1:place></st1:City>. This is also not one of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:City>'s better situations. They're actually three games below .500 in road night games against lefties where they plate just 4.2 RPG. Sabathia goes for the Tribe tonight. They're 11-2 in his 13 home starts this season where he owns a fantastic WHIP of 1.17 to go along with a strong ERA. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Cleveland</st1:place></st1:City> is 4-0 when he starts against AL East opponents this season and they're 13-3 in his 16 night outings. The Indians are a healthy, 34-15 at home while the Sox are 1-4 in Matsuzaka's last five road starts. We'll back the Indians as our 5* release on Tuesday. Thanks! GL! Scott.<o:p></o:p>

free pick926 TOR / 925 MIN Under 9
Analysis:
Yesterday's game managed to find its way above the number. However, the UNDER remains a healthy 7-2 the last nine times the Twins took the field AND an even better 7-1-1 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City>'s last nine games. This should prove to be another relatively low-scoring affair. Both starters come off quality outings against top tier offenses. McGowan held the surging Yankees to four hits and two runs through seven innings in his last start, a 3-2 victory. Meanwhile, Baker held the hot-hitting Tigers to three runs through 6 1/3 innings, en route to a 4-3 loss. Prior to that, Baker limited <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Oakland</st1:place></st1:City> to five hits and two runs through six complete innings. That game also stayed below the number with a final score of 6-2. Including those results, the UNDER has gone 8-3 in Baker's 11 starts for the season. That includes a 4-1 mark on the road. Baker has also seen the UNDER go 2-0 in his two starts vs. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City>, a 2-1 win and a 4-3 win. The Jays have seen the UNDER go 13-2 as home favorites in the -125 to -150 range. In case the line dips below that mark, it's worth noting that they've also seen the UNDER go 4-2 when playing at home with a line ranging from +100 to -125. Consider a play on the UNDER<o:p></o:p>

Game: Los Angeles Dodgers at Houston Astros Jul 24 2007 8:05PM

The over is 4-1 in Hendrickson's last 5 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The over is 5-2-1 in his last 8 starts. The over is 11-2 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Houston</st1:place></st1:City>'s last 13 games vs. NL West opponents. The over is a money making 16-5-1 in their last 22 home games. The over is 4-1 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Jennings</st1:place></st1:City> last 5 starts vs. LA. The teams have played over the total in 4 of their last 5 meetings and you can expect another high scorong game tonight. Play the over.

Game: San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies Jul 24 2007 9:05PM
Prediction: <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:City> Padres
Reason: The Padres are 10-3 in their last 13 road games vs. a right-handed starter. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:City> is 8-3 in their last 11 road games as a favorite of -110 to -150. Young, 9-3 with a 1.85 ERA, is on the mound tonight. The Padres are 13-6 in the games he's started this season. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:City> has won 5 of his last 6 starts. Game: <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> Cubs at St Louis Cardinals Jul 24 2007 8:10PM
Prediction: <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> Cubs
Reason: The Red Hot Cubs are 19-7 in their last 26 games. In their last 20 games as a favorite they are a money making 14-6. The Cubs have won 6 of their last 7 games vs. a team with a losing record. Zambrano, 12-7, is on the mound tonight. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> has won 5 of his last 6 starts. The Cubs have also won 4 of his last 5 road starts vs. a team with a losing record. In his last 28 starts overall the Cubs are 21-7. The Cardinals are only 21-22 at home. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">St. Louis</st1:place></st1:City> has lost 5 of their last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter. Game: San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies Jul 24 2007 9:05PM

Prediction: San Diego Padres

Reason: Play On: San Diego w/Young
Note: Padres take on the Rockies in Game Two of this series in Colorado behind Chris Young, who has won his last five starts in a row in this series and has also never lost a team start in this park in his MLB career (3-0). With Young in commanding KW form with 3 walks and 23 strikeouts in his last three starts, look for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">San Diego</st1:City></st1:place> to improve to 12-4 away in Game Two of a series this evening.
<o:p> </o:p>
Tony Mathews

Matchup: San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies

Selection: San Diego Padres (-140)

Explanation: We will side with the San Diego Padres as they face-off against the Colorado Rockies in Tuesday's MLB contest.

The San Diego Padres will use starting pitcher Chris Young. Chris Young has pitched great this season. In fact, Chris Young has a 1.85 ERA on the season. In addition, Chris Young has a 0.45 ERA in his last 3 starts. It's safe to say that the Colorado Rockies will struggle to score runs tonight.

As for the Colorado Rockies, they will use starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Ubaldo Jimenez should be sent back down to the minors. He has only pitched 5 innings this season (which came against one of the worst offenses in baseball... Washington Nationals), and already has a 3.60 ERA. To say the least, this San Diego Padres offense will be able to score many easy runs.

The San Diego Padres are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings against the Colorado Rockies, and we expect the San Diego Padres to get another win tonight!

Take the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">San Diego</st1:City></st1:place> Padres

As expected the Yankees have started to kick things into the next level, and last night's win was their 4th in a row on the RUN LINE.
The G-Man sees no reason they won't extend that mark tonight, as Chien-Ming Wang will be able to get his usual bevy of ground ball outs against the relatively feeble attack the Royals send to the plate.
With last night's win, <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:State> has now taken 8 of the last 10 meetings against the Royals. 7 of the 8 wins have come by 2 runs or more.
Scott Elarton is making his first start since the middle of June, and the fact his season ERA is over 9 does not bode well against this Yankees' attack. Somehow Elarton has won his last 3 starts against <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:State> dating back to 2005.
I just don't think Elarton is going to extend his win streak over the Yankees tonight, as <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:State> is just in that groove right now.
Take the Yankees on the RUN LINE to continue their mastery over the Royals.

We’re going listless in this one, meaning forget the pitchers, as it's been the bullpen for <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> that has it playing with the type of confidence it has the past several days.
The Snakes have won three straight, and come off a series opening win over the Marlins last night.
<st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> relievers have certainly ignited the team's current three-game win streak, tossing 10-1/3 scoreless innings while scattering two hits and fanning 11. They also haven't allowed a run in eight of the last 10 games.
And though Livan Hernandez is 3-1 at home this season, those relievers may be needed … which is why it doesn't matter if he is listed or not. We also have a chance opposing Sergio Mitre, who has only four wins in 17 starts.

Game: Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Baltimore Orioles Jul 24 2007 7:05PM

Prediction: Baltimore Orioles

Reason: At 7:05 pm, our complimentary selection is on the Baltimore Orioles over Tampa Bay, as Birds starter Daniel Cabrera is a perfect 4-0 lifetime (in 8 appearances) vs. the D-Rays, with a 3.56 ERA. Cabrera's mound opponent will be lefty Scott Kazmir, and Kazmir's struggled against the O's, with a 5.01 career ERA (in 8 appearances), including a dismal start earlier this year in which he gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings pitched.

Take <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Baltimore</st1:place></st1:City>. Good luck, as always,
Al McMordie.

Game: Chicago Cubs at St Louis Cardinals Jul 24 2007 8:10PM

Prediction: Chicago Cubs

Reason: Chicago starter Carlos Zambrano has been pitching lights out of late allowing 11 runs total in his last 9 starts overall. Zambrano has been on the winning side in 7 of his 10 road starts this year. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">St. Louis</st1:place></st1:City> starter Kip Wells has been on the losing side in 14 of his 17 starts this year including 1-6 at home. The Cardinals are just 4-11 in Game 1 of a home series this year.

MLB for 07/24/2007 - Twins at Blue Jays

Prediction: Twins

Coming off back-to-back losses to the Angels and Blue Jays, look for the Twins to bounce back nicely with right-hander Scott Baker (4-3, 5.32 ERA) on the mound. So far this season, Baker has faced <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City> twice and looked great in both performances. Back on June 26, he allowed one earned run, one walk and four hits in seven innings of work. Baker didn't get the decision but <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:place></st1:State> went on to win the game 2-1. Baker met the Blue Jays earlier on May 25 and pitched effectively too. In 5.1 frames, he was touched for only three earned runs and five hits. The Twinkies won that contest 4-3. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City> will counter with RHP Dustin McGowan (6-5, 4.84 ERA). In his last start at <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:State> against the Yankees, McGowan pitched a gem. In seven innings, he was nicked for only two earned runs and four hits in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City>'s 3-2 victory. That's the good news. Unfortunately, in his last nine trips to the mound, McGowan has alternated wins and losses and he enters this contest off a "W". On foreign soil, <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:place></st1:State>'s Baker has made five starts and his numbers are solid. He was tapped for 17 earned runs, five walks and 33 hits in 32 frames. Those stats add up to a respectable 1.187 WHIP and a 4.78 ERA. The Blue Jays have cashed three straight and rarely go on extended winning streaks. In fact, <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City> has only won four (or more) straight once all year long!

Take <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Minnesota</st1:State></st1:place> with Baker.

Play: Money Line: G1 Detroit Tigers

#917 Take Detroit –113 over <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> (2:05 pm MLB.tv) The White Sox and Tigers will play two for the price of two this Tuesday in the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placeName w:st="on">Windy</st1:placeName> <st1:placeType w:st="on">City</st1:placeType></st1:place>. Play: Money Line: LAA Angels

<st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Oakland</st1:place></st1:City> is 6-13 in July this year. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Oakland</st1:place></st1:City> is 2-7 this year when playing against a team with a winning record in 2nd half of the season. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Oakland</st1:place></st1:City> is scoring only 4.2 rpg overall and 3.9 rpg against Righty Starters this year. LA Angels are a very nice 31-15 at home this year. Escobar is 11-3 with a 2.85 ERA overall this year, 6-2 with a 1.95 ERA at home and 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA his last 3 starts. We'll recommend a small play on LA Angels tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

Tuesday's Plays...

20 Dime –

ORIOLES (With Cabrera as listed pitcher)
Take the Orioles for the home win over the Devil Rays.
The Devil Rays were just humiliated in the final three games of their series with the Yankees over the weekend. The 38 runs they allowed in the final two games were the most since Atlanta gave up 39 in consecutive games in 1977.
Tampa Bay has the worst record in the majors and has lost 20 of its last 25 games. They have lost five of six meetings this season with the Orioles and 11 of the past 13. The Devil Rays also dropped six straight at Camden Yards, and 17 of 21 since the start of the 2005 season.
The Orioles have won three straight at home and are 15-13 under interim manager Dave Trembley.
Daniel Cabrera will start for Baltimore and he’s 4-0 with a 3.56 ERA in eight career starts against the Devil Rays.
Take the Orioles at this near even price as they grab the home win.

5 Dime –

RED SOX (With Matsuzaka as listed pitcher)
I had the Red Sox as a nice dog winner last night and I’m sticking with them again here tonight against Cleveland.
Daisuke Matsuzaka gets a chance to amend for the pounding he took at the hands of the Indians at Fenway on May 30. In that game, Dice-K allowed 12 hits and six runs in only 5 2-3 innings as the Tribe beat the Sox 8-4.
I like Matsuzaka’s chances here tonight as the underdog, as the Tribe’s scheduled starter C.C. Sabathia hasn’t exactly been lights out recently.
the Cleveland left-hander is 1-2 with an 8.47 ERA over his last three starts. He’s 2-3 with a 4.35 ERA in six career games against the Red Sox.
Take the Red Sox as they grab the road win once again as the underdog.

BREWERS (With Gallardo and Belisle as listed pitchers)
Take the Brewers as the road chalk for the win over the Reds.
Yovani Gallardo will start for the Brew Crew and I like what I’ve seen from this kid so far. The rookie right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA in seven games this year. He’s 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA over his last three starts.
I don’t think Gallardo will have any troubles stymieing the Reds offense, which has sputtered over the past week.
The Reds will counter with Matt Belisle, who is 5-6 with a 5.13 ERA this year. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA over his last three games.
The Reds, after a brief little run, have cooled off and are back to their losing ways.
Take the Brewers as they grab the road win over the Reds.

CUBS (With Zambrano and Wells as listed pitchers)
Take the Cubs for the road win over the Cardinals.
I know it’s always a risk laying this much juice with a road team, but the numbers are overwhelmingly in Chicago’s favor here.
Start with Carlos Zambrano, who hasn’t allowed a run in 15 2-3 innings dating to a 6-2 loss at Pittsburgh on July 8. He’s 2-1 with a 1.45 ERA over his last three starts. The right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.38 ERA in his last eight starts against the Cardinals dating to 2005.
The Cardinals will counter with Kip Wells and even with an impressive start his last time out, I’m not convinced he can out pitch Zambrano. Wells is 4-12 with a 5.75 ERA this year.
Take the Cubs as they grab the road win.

Analysis: Last night Stan cashed with Boston but tonight Stan is betting the other side as Cleveland sends Sabathia to the hill. Boston has struggled all year against lefties on the road as they are just 4-10 vs lefties away from Fenway. TAKE CLEVELAND as STAN'S AL BIG BET OF THE WEEK and make them a DOUBLE DIME PLAY

Larry Ness' Terrific Tuesday Total (21-7 or 75% TY with MLB totals!)
My Terrific Tuesday Total is on TB/Bal Over at 7:05 ET. The Devil Rays must be happy to have escaped Yankee Stadium. Tampa Bay started a four-game series against the Yankees on Friday with a 14-4 victory for its third win in four games. However, the team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday, losing the opener 7-3 and the nightcap 17-5. Sunday's series finale was even uglier, as New York pounded out 25 hits, including six homers, in a 21-4 rout. However, I'm sure you've heard the phrase "out of the frying pan into the fire," before. Tampa Bay owns the worst record in the majors and has lost 20 of its last 25 games. Facing the Orioles hasn't provided much relief for the Devil Rays lately, as they've lost five of six meetings this season and 11 of the past 13. Tampa Bay also has dropped six straight at Camden Yards and 17 of 21 since the start of the 2005 season! Scott Kazmir gets the start and the left-hander has been outstanding in his past two outings, allowing one earned run and seven hits in 13 innings while striking out 13. That being said, Kazmir's road ERA is 4.72 this season and he's had NO success vs the Orioles these last two seasons. He's lasted four innings or less in THREE of four starts vs Baltimore, posting a 7.41 ERA. That's worrisome, as Tampa's bullpen ERA is the worst in MLB at 6.44 plus it owns a .309 opponents' BA. The Orioles hardly own a feared lineup but the team is averaging 5.3 RPG vs left-handers at night in Camden. As for Baltimore, the Orioles will start Daniel Cabrera. He has not pitched well in '07, posting a 5.91 ERA is 12 home starts. Tampa, like Baltimore, is not much of an offensive power, but the Devil Rays have averaged 5.2 RPG vs right-handed starters in 35 road games this year. Terrific Tuesday Total on TB/Bal Over.

Good Luck...Larry

Larry Ness' Las Vegas Insider (19-10 or 66% since May 21!)
My Las Vegas Insider is on the Chi Cubs at 8:10 ET. Chicago lost 3-0 to Arizona on Sunday to drop the final two games of the series but finished 7-3 on its homestand. The Cubs haven't lost three straight since losing a season-high six in a row (May 27-June 2), going 29-15 since to close in on the Brewers in the Central (trail by just three games). The Cubs went 3-2 while Derrek Lee (hitting .337 TY) served a five-game suspension for his role in a skirmish with San Diego on June 16. He's back in the lineup tonight and Carlos Zambrano will be on the mound. Zambrano didn't allow a run in his second straight start, giving up two hits before being pulled after five innings because of heat exhaustion in the Cubs' 12-1 win over San Francisco on Wednesday. He hasn't allowed a run in 15.2 innings dating to a 6-2 loss at Pittsburgh on July 8. He's 7-2 in his last nine outings, allowing two ERs or less eight times, while posting a 1.86 ERA in that stretch! Zambrano is 6-4 with a 2.43 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) against St Louis, including a 5-0 mark with a 1.38 ERA in his last eight starts against the Cardinals dating to 2005. Kip Wells (4-12, 5.75) will take the mound for St Louis in the opening game of a seven-game homestand against the NL Central's top two teams (Milwaukee is next). Wells, looking to avoid becoming the majors' first 13-game loser, will try to post consecutive wins for the first time in 2007. He allowed two hits in eight innings of a 6-0 victory at Florida on Wednesday. However, don't be fooled by one good outing. The Cards are 3-14 in his 17 starts this year and at minus-$1,209 on the season, only San Francisco's Matt Cain (3-17 and minus-$1,666) has lost more money among MLB's starters in '07! Las Vegas Insider on the Chi Cubs.

Good Luck...Larry

Larry Ness' 15* AL Game of the Week (now 76-25 since Opening Day!)
My 15* play is on the Cle Indians at 7:05 ET. The Red Sox totaled 29 runs while winning the last three games of their home series with the White Sox and opened a seven-game road trip with a 6-2 victory over the Indians on Monday night. However, there are a number of reasons I'm going against them here. Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (11-7, 3.99) is trying to work out of a rough patch in his season. After a stretch of six consecutive outings in which he yielded two runs or fewer, he's s 1-2 with a 7.31 ERA in his last three starts, failing to last longer than six innings in any of them. On Thursday against Chicago, Matsuzaka walked a season-high six in five innings, allowing three runs and two hits as the Red Sox fell 4-2. He also fared poorly in his May 30 start against Cleveland, suffering an 8-4 loss after giving up six runs and a season-high 12 hits in 5.2 innings. While Cleveland starter CC Sabathia is 1-2 with an 8.47 ERA in three July starts, he's 13-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 21 starts this year. Cleveland is 16-5 in his starts TY and at plus-$773, he's ranked 7th among MLB starters in money won. Also note that he's 9-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 13 home starts, with the Indians going 11-2 in those games. Boston is just 14-14 vs left-handers this year, including a poor 4-10 mark (minus-$905) away from Fenway, where the Red Sox have averaged just 3.8 RPG. AL Game of the Week 15* Cle Indians.
