They said Donaghy made 260K during the press conference but I guess the salary stays flat over time.

I'm sure they get bonuses for playoff games etc....

Well that's an easy fix. If they think 300k isnt enough, then go on strike, and there will be a line out the door for the job

so the question is, how much money does it take to have a NBA Official that has a gambling problem stop gambling?

hmmm that's a pretty big freaking number

wouldn't it be easier just to hire officails that don't have gambling problems?

That is like saying should Nasa just hire astronauts that are not psycho depends wearing stalkers?

And he hired clean and went bad, how do you screen for that?

They need other compensation. Athletes get bonuses, why not these guys. First of all, 10% Bonus Play bonus. Instead of losing to the local bookie, you can lose this and not get squeezed to become a corrupt zebra. That will be a signing bonus.

Then a loyalty bonus, if you don't get busted fixing games, you get another 10% Bonus Play or 5% cash.

The referal bonus, find a friend and he signs up another bonus, maybe a spare whistle. If that friend fixes games, you surrender that bonus whistle.

If you don't play along that episode with Sheed escalates and everyone turns their backs.

If any of these guys truly find their job descriptions or level of compensation inadequate I am sure they are free to find employment elsewhere.

37k a game does seem low

huh? They officiate more than 8 games per year. He officiated 772 regular season games over the course of his 13 seasons, which is slightly less than 60 games/season, or $4333.33/game at his current salary.

Please just give me the jackass post of the day award now........

Guess that should have been 3.7k per game......

Cut me some slack, I am only a mortgage broker by day you know, who needs to be able to do simple arithmetics when you are in the mortgage game?

Aside from the wrong decimal point these clowns in clown suits are spoiled and full of themselves. What makes them so special? Who makes that kind of cash plus other perks and the television time? Did they get a doctorate in NBA officiating? All they have to do is go through a rules seminar and do a bunch of up and backs, blow a whistle, the less the better. And of course not be corrupt. There must be a million man waiting list for this tough career. All those NCAA refs, who were high school refs. If you could dump all of the air traffic controllers, you sure as hell could start over with new young refs. Could the officiating get worse? If it was a pay per performance position, they would make poverty wages.

do you guys really think paying a ref more money would make them stop gambling? Where do some of you even come up with this stuff?
Theres never enough money for anybody, we always want more.
Shaq was buying scratch off lottery tickets the day he came into the league and signed that huge contract.
More money isnt gonna stop people from cheating or gambling. If that was the case why dont all gamblers just go get another job and quit gambling?
You can never get rid of greed and corruption in society.

300K a year seems pretty fair for the top NBA refs...after taxes about 3K a week.

I would like to see the salary figures for NBA MLB NHL and NFL , if anyone has them.

I think the median salary for MLB umps is about $260,000. And NFL officials make between 1400-4000 a game. I'd like to see exactly who made what, but I can't find it.

3K a week is no where near enough for a person with a gambling problem as bad as this ref has.
