Who is going to win NL MVP? I'd argue there's not a clear frontrunner at this point. Some might say Bonds is going to take it simply because he broke the record, but will the writers even vote for him? He's a clear steroid user who would be about 75 HR short of the record had he not juiced, and he's notoriously disliked by reporters (and vice versa) because of his abrasive and standoffish attitude.

So who else does that leave? Hanley Ramirez (unlikely, especially if he is injured)? Miguel Cabrera? Chase Utley? Chipper Jones? These are the leaders in VORP in the NL, but only Chipper and maybe Utley are on contending teams...does that mean it might go to Bonds, simply because there isn't a clear cut winner?

Fielder is probably a minor fav at the moment, HR total and playing for a team in position to make the playoffs.

Howard, Utley, Cabrera, Hanley and Reyes round it out for me. And there's absolutely no chance Bonds takes it. Same goes for Chipper, way to low RBI total.

Prince Fielder?

He could certainly contend if the Brewers don't choke. In fact, he might be my choice as of right now. Other options are Pujols (still have to include him despite poor year and bad team), Holliday and Cabrera. Anyone think a pitcher could make a run at it?

Also, since Utley is being brought up, does anyone remember the last time two players on the same team won back to back MVPs?

Chase Utley
Prince Fielder
Miguel Cabrera
Aramis Ramirez
Chipper Jones

Someone from that group.

Fielder was my mid-season MVP. As of now, no reason to change that vote. You are astute in observing that most of the better statistical candidates are on non-contending teams.

Prince is in consideration, but I think he may run into the same problem Andruw Jones did in 2005. A shit ton of HR is usually not enough to get you the MVP ... granted he's batting in the .280's whereas Andruw was in the low .270s if I remember, but more importantly, he is only batting .234 with RISP and an even worse .200 with RISP and 2 out.

Also, sabermetric statistics usually don't play a part in the MVP voting directly, but they do usually indicate who is playing better than whom, and there are 9 guys in the NL who are playing more valuable offense than Fielder at this point in the season. Unless he ends up hitting 60 or more--which I don't see happening--I don't think he takes it.

yeah but he is the big bat on a team that is "surprisingly" in first in a pretty mediocre NL.

No on the Dodgers stands out, or the Padres, the Mets maybe Reyes, the Cubs not really.......neither the Dbacks or any of the other decent/good NL teams...

If the Cubs take the division, Aramis Ramirez could end up in contention. I believe he leads the league in game-winning hits.

Call me a homer, but if the Braves take the division I think Chipper has a legit shot. Yes, his HR and RBI numbers are down--he missed almost 20 games--but he's top 5 in all of baseball in every rate category.
