A battle of potential Cy Young winners goes tonight as the Red Sox send Josh Beckett to the bump to square off against the Indians Fausto Carmona whose having a season for the ages. The young buck comes into this match-up a fantastic 12-4 overall, and the Tribe has won 13 of his 19 overall starts this season. However, Beckett has been downright lethal this season, so he'll have to be on top of his game. That being said, the Tribe just doesn't have what it takes to compete with the upper echelon teams in this league. They've already dropped the first two of this series, and they've dropped four of the five overall meeting against the BoSox this season. This is a must win spot for Cleveland. They have performed admirably in Game 3's of a series off a loss (11-3), but I just don't foresee them being able to solve Mr. Beckett. Also, their bats are yet to take advantage of any situation in this series. Why will they now? I just don't see it. Cleveland's close, but they're not quite there yet. Maybe they'll come out of nowhere and give some run support to Fausto, but I'm backing what I believe to be the better overall team with the better starter at nearly a pick 'em, and you should to.

Now that was fun!!! Last night's game in Busch had a true playoff atmosphere surrounding it, and best of all, the Cubbies came out on top. The game had all the dram you could want in a 4-3 game, and it will no doubt have both clubs fans flocking to Busch once again tonight to see Ted Lilly and Adam Wainwright battle it out. Check this out!!! 3-0, 20.1 IP, 18 hits, 1.03 WHIP, and a 2.21 ERA. 3-0, 21 IP, 17 hits, 1.14 WHIP, 1.29 ERA. Those look to be some scary good looking number...right? Well, those just happen to be the splits for both starters tonight over their L/3 starts. The Cubs could only manage 4 against Kip Wells and company last night. Wainwright has been their best starter of late, and he's been awfully nasty. Just take a gander at those numbers up above again. However, the Redbirds will find it just as hard to tally against Lilly considering their batting a woeful .259 vs. left-handers this year with an even more pathetic .369 slugging percentage. This has 1-0 or 2-1 written all over it, so buckle yourself in for what certainly looks to be a pitchers duel. The bullpens will most definitely decide this one. With both clubs boasting decent units, I'm comfortable backing the 'Under', and you should to

Detroit (-130) at WHITE SOX

Tonight we suggest laying the road chalk with the Tigers, as Detroit was on the shortside in not one, but two games yesterday in the Windy City as the White Sox broke out the broom on Detroit for a double-dip sweep.
The Tigers should get the bats cranking against Jose Contreras who allowed a whopping 10 runs in his last start at Boston, as he suffered his 5th straight loss! The Sox have dropped 9 of Contreras' last 10 starts, and will lose again tonight as they have been unable to figure out Kenny Rogers of late.
Last year Rogers went 3-1 over 5 starts against the Pale Hose, allowing just 3 earned runs over 33 innings of work!
The Tigers are 33-19 on the road this year, so the chances of the White Sox pulling off their 3rd win in a row tonight seem unrealistic.
Go with the Motown Cats in this one.

Play on the Tigers!

Game: New York Yankees at Kansas City (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: New York Yankees -140

There are times during the season that a team can out-hit anyone they put on the mound. The Yankees are in one of those stretches right now. The Yankees are scoring runs in bunches, having averaged 10+ now for five games. And, seven of the nine hitters in the lineup have 4+ game hitting streaks. There are no soft spots and even Johnny Damon has caught fire. They banged out 13 more hits last night and have hung a pair of 9's on the Royals in the first two games. Gil Meche holds this line down as does an erratic Mike Musina. Meche hasn't exactly been great since mid-May, as he has pitched to a 5.13 ERA since. This team has sandwiched a 14-3 run, and their current 16-5 run, around a losing streak of 2-9. The Yankees look like a team on a mission, and are about as hot as it gets right now

Oakland Athletics @ Los Angeles Angels u8.5
Wed Jul 25 '07 3:35p

John Lackey (12-6, 3.21) the Angels starting pitcher here tonight against the Oakland As has been one of the Halos top hurlers all season long. The veteran righty also has a great history in this series vs the Athletics as is evident by a 10-3 record and a stingy 2.86 ERA in 20 career outings. His pitching opponent from the As Joe Blanton (8-7,3.53) has also been a consistent cog in his teams rotation, having allowed 3 or less ERs in 7 of his L/10 appearances and has gone 7 or more innings 7 times during that span. With two quality throwers on the hill this game has a high probability of staying under the set total. Final notes & Key Trends: Lackey has seen 7 of his L/8 starts vs AL West division rival stay under the set total. As have gone under in 7 of their L/8 with a total of between 7 and 8.5. These two teams have combined to score 7 or less runs, in 6 of 7 head to head tilts this season. Play Under

The NY YANKEES are 16-19 against the money line vs. poor power teams - averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game this season and 10-17 against the money line in road games vs. good defensive catchers - allowing 0.5 or less SB's/game this season. KANSAS CITY is 18-13 against the money line in home games vs. AL teams scoring 5.2 or more runs/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. MECHE is 24-18 against the money line vs. teams outscoring opp by 0.5 or more runs/game in the second half of the season since 1997. (Team's Record)

Wednesday, July 25th, 7:10 P.M. EST EST

Reds send Kyle Lohse to the mound against Jeff Suppan and the Brewers in the Queen City this evening knowing Milwaukee has dropped 7 of 10 games on the road behind Suppan this season. With Suppan owning a miserable 7.92 career ERA in Cincinnati, with 16 walks and 14 strikeouts in 22.2 innings of work, we'll stay at home with Lohse and the Reds here tonight.

Bobby Maxwell
Atlanta at SAN FRANCISCO (even)

The Braves have taken the first two games of this series and it seems the only pitcher that ever gives the Giants a decent chance of winning is lefty Noah Lowry (10-7, 3.55 ERA).
Lowry is 7-2 at home with a 2.81 ERA and is 2-1 in his last three outings. Lowry has allowed three runs or less in four of his last five starts and the Giants have won six of his last eight.
Chuck James (8-7, 3.58 ERA) has an ERA of 4.13 on the highway but he has been stellar in eight of his last 10 outings, holding the opposition to two runs or less.
The Giants can only seem to win if Lowry pitches so let's play San Francisco in this one. Lowry should be able to shut down the Braves offense just like he has everybody else when he pitches at home.

Michael Cannon
Boston at CLEVELAND (-110)

Take the Indians tonight at home over the Red Sox.
Boston has taken the first two games of this series in impressive fashion, but I like the Tribe to bounce back tonight behind Fausto Carmona.
Carmona has won four straight starts, allowing only six earned runs over 26 1-3 innings during that span for a 2.05 ERA. He has reverted back to his dominant self of earlier this season.
The Red Sox will start Josh Beckett, so it won't be an easy task getting the win but I still like the Tribe in this spot.
Beckett, despite beating Cleveland earlier this year, is still only 1-2 with a 9.18 ERA in three career games against the Tribe.
Take Cleveland as they bounce back and grab the home win tonight.

2♦ CLEVELAND

Dave Cokin
Take "(951) SDG Padres"

I'm going to back the pitching trends involving Justin Germano and Aaron Cook as the Padres wrap up their series with the Rockies. Germano has been lights out on the road and in day games. Cook has yet to record a single win under the sun this season. That's an edge for San Diego, and coupled with the fact they've been installed as dogs here, my call is on the Padres.

Jim Feist
Take "Under"

A pair of southpaws matchup this Wednesday in Queens as the Pirates take on the Mets. The Pirates Tom Gorzelanny continues to be a bright spot for the Bucs this season. Despite taking a tough loss in his last outing versus Houston, 2-1, Gorzelanny is still a nice 9-5 overall this year and 5-2 on the road. And, he's been very consistent with his era, 3.21 overall and 3.38 on the road. In addition, he has an excellent strikeout to walk ratio of 2.26 (86 ko's to just 38 bb's). Crafty veteran Tom Glavine hasn't been as effective as last year's 17-8 mark, but at home he's been quite impressive with a 5-1 record and 3.00 era. We expect this matchup to be a very good pitcher's duel, so we'll take the UNDER here on Wednesday.

The Nats don't stand a chance against Hamels and the red hot Phillies tonight. Hamels is 11-5 this season overall and a brilliant 6-2 at home. Washington is just 4-21 against the money line in road games vs. teams who strand 7.5 or more runners on base per game over the last 2 seasons. In order to strand a lot of base runners, you have to produce a lot of base runners. Washington has lost the games fitting this situation by an average of 2.7 runs per game. Analysis: PADRES/ROCKIES OVER 10 -115 (Germano/Cook) When I see day games in the late Summer at Coors Field, salivation becomes prevalent and I am having some of that going on right now. While this Malady can get Messy, it also can be very profitable. We all know what these Rockies are all about, and certainly the Padres Pitcher for today knows as well. He has had ZERO Luck with Colorado and in 3 games has lasted just over 12 innings, while allowing 15 hits and 13 runs. Interestingly he has not see a ball go OVER the fence but he has seen plenty of them go OVER his head. There are a lot of throwers in this league that do not like what Coors Field has to offer and they especially do not like it when they are forced to take the mound during the heat of the summer, when the balls are flying around the Park like guided missiles. That is what is happening these days in Denver and that is what happens more times than not when the Sun is out. The Rocky starter does not that for sure and he too has seen some rockets while on the mound in the town in which he lives. Cook has been hit hard at Coors, with visitors batting over the .300 mark and scoring 2 runs every 3 innings he has thrown over the course of 63 innings worked. This Field is not the Homerun Dream that it used to be since the fences have been moved back, but it has become a difficult Field to defend wit wide open expanses the the Outfield. That is why Rocky and Visitor batting averages are a Mile High in this Mile High City and that is why it will continue to be so. Cook has certainly felt the brunt of that and so will Germano more than likely. While the Padres are not that potent at the plate they have managed 10 runs in the first games of this series and they could have easily had more. We already know what the Home Boys can do and often do. With the Rockies Pen just not being that spiffy and the Padres Pen somewhat weary and not performing well right now, I do think we could see 9 innings of offense here today and I will certainly lean that we will see enough to get this number.

MATT F@RGO

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians 7:05 PM ET

Boston has now won five straight after taking the first two games of this series. The win snapped a six-game losing skid on the road but the Red Sox still remain a solid road team as they are seven games over .500 on the year. Cleveland is just 7-10 in its last 17 games and the pitching has been the biggest culprit as it has allowed 5.4 rpg over that span. Boston has won eight of the last 10 games played at Jacobs Field and is 6-1 in its last seven when their opponent scores two runs or less in their previous game.
After a couple of blowups in June, Josh Beckett has responded with three straight quality starts to begin July. He has a 3.60 ERA for the month and he now takes to the road for the first tie since June 24th. After four straight games at home, it is usually a tough transition but that is not the case here as Beckett is at his best when away from Fenway Park. He is 6-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in six road starts with the Red Sox winning those games by an average of 4.8 rpg.

Fausto Carmona has also rebounded following a difficult June and he is coming off one of his best start of the season at Texas. Like Beckett, he is better pitching on the road as he has a 4.20 ERA at home with just six of his nine starts being quality outings. Making that even not so special is the fact that four of those starts came against Kansas City (twice), Baltimore and Tampa Bay. Boston is hitting .305 against righties over its last 10 games and is 21-7 in its last 28 road games vs. a right-handed starter.

A lot of factors play into this one and Boston falls into a great situation based on those. Play on road teams that are averaging 5.2 or fewer rpg with a bullpen whose ERA is 3.00 or better on the season going up against a starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.20 or better on the season. This situation is 57-31 against the moneyline (64.7 percent) since 1997 while picking up over 36 units over that span. This situation won with Boston on Tuesday and will do so again tonight.

Florida Marlins (48-53) at Arizona Diamondbacks (54-48)
(L) Scott Olsen (8-7) vs. (R) Brandon Webb (8-8)

The Diamondbacks have won fourth straight and four of their last five games at Chase Field, including Tuesday's 9-3 win over the Marlins. However, the Marlins will hand the ball to Scott Olsen. The southpaw has won three of his last four decisions and the Marlins have won five of his last six starts. Take Florida with Olsen on the hill to limit the Diamondbacks offense. Arizona's right-hander Brandon Webb is 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA in his last four starts.

Today's MLB Picks

Atlanta at San Francisco

The Giants put a scare in Atlanta last night with four runs in bottom of the ninth to force extra innings before losing in the 13th (7-5). Today they should be in a little better position in the early going with Noah Lowry on the mound. Lowry has been lights out at home (7-2, 2.82 ERA in 10 home starts) and makes the Giants an attractive underdog pick (+155) according to Dunkel, which has San Francisco favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: San Francisco (+155). Here are all of today's games.

Florida starter Scott Olsen was knocked around in his only career start against Arizona, surrendering six earned runs and nine hits over five innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS
Olsen has picked up two straight victories over Cincinnati and Washington, as the left-hander has limited opponents to just four runs over his last 12 innings. The Marlins have won five of his last six starts. EDGE: MARLINS
Arizona’s Brandon Webb is 2-3 with a 6.28 ERA in five career games versus Florida. The sinker ball pitcher picked up a victory in his only start against the Marlins last season, allowing two earned runs and seven hits over five innings. SLIGHT EDGE: MARLINS
The Diamondbacks have lost five of Webb’s last six starts due to the team’s lack of offense. Arizona has scored just 12 runs over that span. EDGE: UNDER
Arizona is 4-0 in their last four games versus a left-handed starter.

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (10:15 PM ET)

Atlanta’s Chuck James is 6-3 with a 4.13 ERA in 11 road starts this season. The Braves have won his last two starts away from Turner Field over the Florida Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers. EDGE: BRAVES
James has limited experience versus the Giants in three career appearances, going 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Giants southpaw starter Noah Lowry has posted a brilliant 7-2 record and 2.82 ERA in 10 home starts this season. He’s allowed just two home runs in 60 2/3 innings at AT&T Park this year. EDGE: GIANTS
Lowry is 2-1 with a 4.08 ERA in three starts this month, but has issued 12 walks and fanned just 11 over 17 2/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
The Giants are 1-4 in Lowry’s last five starts versus the National League East.

Wednesday’s MLB betting notes

Boston gets Big Papi back

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is close to a return to the lineup after sitting out the last five days with a strained left shoulder. The designated hitter will take batting practice on Tuesday and should be back for Wednesday’s game against Cleveland.

"I still have a little pain today but it's getting better," Ortiz told MLB.com. "I've got to hit on the field tomorrow and see how it feels and go from there. If I'm fine, I'll play. I always play sore anyway."

Big Papi was batting .321 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs before a tumble into second base saw him leave Friday’s game against the White Sox clutching his shoulder.

For his expected return on Wednesday the Red Sox send Josh Beckett (13-3, 3.41 ERA) to the mound to face the Indian’s Fausto Carmona (12-4, 3.52). Boston is a –106 favorite with the total set at 9.

Butler staying hot

Kansas City Royals outfielder Billy Butler has been a revelation since coming up from the minors in May and his hot-hitting form shows no signs of letting up.

Butler has been on fire since the All-Star break, posting a .444 average so far in the second half of the season. Overall he is batting .323 with three homers and 26 RBIs in 35 games this year.

"He’s the best hitter I’ve ever seen," third baseman Alex Gordon told the Kansas City Star on Saturday. "I said it last year when we were together at (Class AA) Wichita. He’s just an all-round hitter."

The Royals will be looking for more inspiration from Butler on Wednesday as they continue a four-game series against the Yankees. Gil Meche (7-6, 3.63) will test his stuff against Mike Mussina (4-7, 4.97) and New York is a –140 favorite.

Padres’ pen problems

The San Diego Padres bullpen has long been considered the backbone of the team, but they have had their problems recently. The Padres lost four games in a row through Monday and the bullpen was at fault for all of them.

In Monday’s loss to the Colorado Rapids, reliever Scott Linebrink inherited a 5-2 lead in the seventh but not could hold on to it and the home team rallied back to a 7-5 win. That was the third game in a row in which the Padres bullpen surrendered five runs or more.

Wednesday’s starter, Justin Germano (6-4, 3.77), will be hoping for better support from the bullpen as he comes up against Colorado’s Aaron Cook (6-6, 4.37). San Diego is a +127 underdog with the total set at 10.

Berkman plays through pain

Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman returned to the lineup on Monday after missing three games with a hand injury, but don’t be surprised to see him rested again later in the week.

Berkman is struggling with a bruised hand and it was heavily taped up on his return to avoid further problems. He told MLB.com after Monday’s game that the injury hadn’t fully gone away.

"It's going to take some getting used to it," Berkman said. "As a hitter, anything wrong with your hand, that's a major deal with how you swing the bat. But now it's gotten to a point where we can manage it a little bit."

Meanwhile, the Astros close out a three-game series against the L.A. Dodgers on Wednesday, sending Matt Albers (2-4, 5.76) to the mound. The Dodgers counter with Derek Lowe (8-9, 3.48) and are –135 favorites.

A-Rod closes in on 500

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez looks set to hit his 500th home run this week after hitting number 498 against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The third baseman has been the Yankees hottest hitter so far this season, posting a .313 batting average with 34 homers. Manager Joe Torre expects that form to continue long after his 500th home run.

"To me, Alex is just stopping off here at 500," Torre told the New York Times on Monday. "It’s not like, oh, good, I made my career. He has higher aspirations than that. Five hundred is the ticket to the Hall of Fame, but this kid, if he stays healthy, God only knows."

The Times also added that no player has hit his 500th home run as a member of the Yankees since Mickey Mantle in May of 1967.

Biggio went 2-for-4 with a tiebreaking grand slam in Houston's 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

SURGING

The New York Yankees defeated Kansas City 9-4 on Tuesday and have scored 63 runs in a five-game span for the first time since July 26-29, 1931, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. New York had put a runner on base in 24 consecutive innings before the eighth. New York (53-46), a season-best seven games over .500, has won 10 of 12 and pulled within 4 1/2 games of Cleveland, the AL wild card leader.

SWEEPS

The Chicago White Sox swept a doubleheader from Texas, winning 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon and 8-7 in the nightcap. Bobby Jenks saved both games for Chicago. ... Texas edged Seattle 2-1 in the first half of a doubleheader and 4-3 in the nightcap. Eric Gagne pitched the ninth inning in both games to pick up his 15th and 16th saves of the season.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

C.C. Sabathia allowed one run on five hits in seven innings but was the losing pitcher in Cleveland's 1-0 loss to Boston on Tuesday. ... Jason Bay homered twice - his first multihomer game of the year - in Pittsburgh's 8-4 loss to the New York Mets.

SIDELINED

The Los Angeles Angels placed Bartolo Colon on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a sore right elbow. Colon, the 2005 AL Cy Young winner, left Monday night's game after pitching one inning against the Oakland Athletics. He gave up four runs on four hits and one walk during the Angels' 12-6 loss.

SPEAKING

''Really, I was garbage all day besides one swing. It's nice if when you do something when you're not feeling great that it matters.'' - Chicago White Sox slugger Paul Konerko, on his tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning of a 5-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday. Konerko finished 2-for-8 with three RBIs in the two games.

SEASONS
July 25

1918 - Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators pitched a four-hitter in 15 innings to beat the St. Louis Browns 1-0. The only hit off him in the first 11 innings was a triple by George Sisler.

Streaking Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOT

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Baltimore has won each of the last six times the southpaw has taken the hill. He has allowed zero runs in three of those outings and his last three appearanes have played under the total. The Orioles host Tampa as -184 favorites and the total is set at 8 ½ runs.

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - The Royals have a 5-0 record the last five times Meche has taken the bump (but have played over the total in Meche's last three starts). In nine career starts against the Yankees, the righty has an ERA below 4.00, but Kansas City is still a +130 underdog at home.

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) - The North Siders have scored at least seven runs in each of the lefty's last five starts, which has helped backers cash out at the pay window in each of those games. His ERA over that span is under 3.00 and he is attempting to win his sixth straight game for the first time in nearly four years when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics. Chicago is listed at -102 in St. Louis tonight.

COLD

Andy Sonnanstine (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - The Devil Rays rookie is a perfect fit for the club because he knows what losing in the major leagues is all about. He spent just over three years in the minors compiling an impressive 40-18 record in 74 starts, but ever since he put on the big league uniform he has seen much different results. He has been an underdog in all nine of his starts and with good reason – Tampa's record in those outings is 1-8. The Rays are +176 underdogs in Baltimore.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras' days as a money starter appear to be long over. He has lost his last five outings and his ERA in those appearances is hovering above 8.00. He was named to the AL All-Star team last year, but didn't play because ChiSox manager Ozzie Guillen wanted to save him for the stretch run. Well, it looks like the righty left most of his value behind in Pittsburgh because he has suffered 21 defeats since last year's Midsummer Classic, which is the most among active starters since then. Chicago is listed as a +127 home dog against Detroit.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (-102, 9)

The present meets the future tonight in Cleveland when this season’s Cy Young frontrunner Josh Beckett faces off against future Cy Young contender Fausto Carmona.

Beckett is tied for the American League lead in wins with 13 while Carmona is only one victory behind with 12. This battle on the hill has Boston priced at a tempting -106 with its ace getting the ball.

The BoSox have won five straight games heading into tonight, including the first two games of this series with the Indians. They seem to be back on track after alternating wins and losses for about a month and a half.

Pick: Red Sox -106

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers (-108, 10 ½)

The Mariners are 4-1 in Miguel Batista’s last five starts, including his most recent effort in Toronto which happens to be the last game Seattle has won. The M’s are stuck in a five-game rut heading into tonight's Game 3 against the Rangers.

Batista has a 2.85 ERA over his last five appearances and is 2-0 versus Texas this season. During his career, Batista is 3-3 against the Rangers with an ERA of 4.65. He overcame dehydration and illness against the Blue Jays last Friday and will be able to overcome his team’s current slump tonight.

Pick: Mariners +100

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (-103, 8 ½)

The geriatric Giants were up way past their bedtime last night, losing 7-5 in 13 innings to the Atlanta Braves. San Fran’s aging lineup was on the field for over four hours, including Barry Bonds, who played the entire game.

Manager Bruce Bochy isn’t sure if Bonds will play today or not, telling reporters that the left fielder’s status is “wait and see.” Bonds is hitting .175 in the month of July with 10 RBIs and three home runs, sitting two behind Henry Aaron's record number of 755.

Without Barry in the lineup, the Giants have no threat at the plate. They are hitting .241 since the All-Star break with only seven home runs and 18 extra-base hits.

Pick: Braves -105

5* Tigers -135

WINNING POINTS

Wednesday, July 25, 2007

CHICAGO CUBS (Lilly) -105 over ST. LOUIS (Wainwright)

Ted Lilly has been one of the hottest pitchers in
baseball over the past couple of months. He has
lowered his ERA to 3.58 in 20 starts and he has
been a major factor fueling Chicago's rise in the
NL Central standings. Today he gets to take on a
floundering St. Louis team that checks in with a
4-9 record vs. lefties at Busch Stadium (-$850
with only 3.0 runs per game in those contests).
The Cubs are a healthy 21-12 against righties
on the road (+$965) so they should fare well vs.
Adam Wainwright, despite his recent success.
Great price on the hot visitor in this one.

10:10 pm
**PREFERRED
UNDER 8.5
Atlanta at San Francisco
The two lefties in Wednesday's larger and later of the two qualifiers get a nice, relatively cold 57-degree night in which to work. The Giants are hitting only .212 vs. James and the Braves are hitting .262 vs. Lowry, with only one home run between the two teams against these starters.

OAK / LAA UNDER

Andrew Lange

Cincinnati (Lohse) -105
I am going to back Cincinnati and Kyle Lohse tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers. I try not to get too hung up on home/road splits, just because a lot of times, from a pitching standpoint, it is more who you are playing vs. where you are at. However, Lohse has some mammoth differences home vs. away. At Great American Ballpark, which if you don’t already know, is arguably the top hitting park in the league, Lohse has an impressive 2.57 ERA and more importantly, has allowed just four HRs in 57.1 innings of work. On the road – 6.42 ERA, 11 HRs, 68.2 innings. Milwaukee ’s offense is not nearly as potent on the road at .256 and since the All-Star break, they are hitting just .226. And speaking of home/road splits, check Milwaukee ’s record away from Miller Park (20-27). They are the only first place team in baseball to have a sub .500 record away from home. As for Brewers starter Jeff Suppan, at the start of June he had a 7-5 record with a 3.71 ERA. Heading into this game, he sports stats of 8-8 and 4.92. And I hope Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. are in the lineup considering they are a combined 17-of-31 with six HRs and 14 RBIs in their careers vs. Suppan AND lefties are hitting .347 with an .889 OPS vs. the right-hander this season. Cincinnati is lacking in a lot of departments, but there are plenty of edges is this one to give me reason to back them.

Recommendation: Cincinnati

Seattle (Batista) at Texas (McCarthy) Under 10.5
A lot of respect to two offenses that are dangerous but haven’t shown much life of late. Since the All-Star break, Texas and Seattle have combined to average right around eight runs per game. Yesterday’s double-header featured scores of 2-1 and 4-3. Seattle’s key hitters, Ichiro and Adiran Beltre, are a combined 7-for their last-37. Starting pitchers Miguel Batista and Brandon McCarthy have both righted the ship after starting the season very slow. McCarthy hasn’t been great but is light years better than he was earlier this season. Batista has been a surprise with a solid 4.32 ERA -- a full run lower than what he had the start of June. After going over the total in his first three starts, the under has come in 12 of Batista’s last 17 games. Same deal with McCarthy, who is on a 7-3-1 run to the under. Obviously anything can happen in Texas’ ballpark, but I feel both pitchers are not getting respect they deserve which is why

I’ll take the under.

Larry Ness' Oddsmaker's Error-MLB (3-0 last week!)
My Oddsmaker's Error is on the SF Giants at 10:10 ET. The Giants have lost the first two games of this four-game series with the Braves and 10 of 13, overall. The Braves have matched a season high with three straight road victories and have won six of seven away from Turner Field. They will also send Chuck James to the mound, who is 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA in his last four starts (team is 3-1), limiting opponents to a .186 average. James is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in one start and two relief appearances against the Giants. That being said, I like the Giants. James has made 11 road starts in '07, posting a 4.13 ERA (his home ERA is 2.90). More importantly, the Braves will be facing a tough lefty in San Francisco's Noah Lowry. While the Braves have averaged 5.2 RPG in 57 outings this season when facing a right-handed starter, they are just 20-24 (minus-$705) vs left-handers, averaging a full run per game less (4.2). Lowry is 5-2 with a 3.97 ERA over his last eight starts (team is 6-2). For the season, his road ERA is 4.32 (nine starts) but his home ERA is 2.82, as he's 7-2 and the Giants are 7-3 in those 10 starts. Lowry IS the difference here but the moneyline doesn't properly reflect it. Oddsmaker's Error on the SF Giants.

Good Luck...Larry

Larry Ness' Las Vegas Insider (now on 20-10 run since May 21!)
My Las Vegas Insider is on the Sea Mariners at 8:35 ET. All of a sudden, the Mariners have lost five straight games. Toronto handed them back-to-back shut out losses on Saturday and Sunday and now the Rangers have won the first three games of this four-games series in Texas (took a DH, yesterday). I don't typically take a team on a losing streak but let's remember, Seattle is still MLB's biggest moneymaker in '07 (plus-$1,541). The Rangers are hardly a formidable foe, especially with Brandon McCarthy on the mound. McCarthy has not won since May 20. He spent most of June on the disabled list because of a recurring blister on his right middle finger and is 0-3 with a 5.08 ERA in his last six starts. The Rangers' offense has made it challenging for McCarthy, who's received just two runs of support in those six outings. The right-hander had one of his worst starts of the season against the Mariners on April 15, getting ripped for six runs and six hits (including a season-high three home runs) in just two innings of a 14-6 loss. He's 0-2 with a 12.71 ERA in three games (one start) lifetime against Seattle. Meanwhile, Seattle's Miguel Batista (10-7 4.32) is on the verge of matching a career-high in wins (won 11 games for Arizona in '01 and '06). Things didn't start well for Batista in '07, as he went 3-3 with a 6.98 ERA in his first seven starts but he's 7-4 with a 2.96 ERA in 13 games since May 18. Seattle's 12-7 (plus-$679) in Batista's starts this year, ranking his 13th among MLB starts vs the moneyline. Las Vegas Insider on the Sea Mariners.

Good Luck...Larry

Larry Ness' 15* MLB Blowout of the Week (76-26 with 15* GOW plays TY!)

My 15* play is on the Det Tigers at 8:10 ET. The Tigers still own MLB's best road record (33-19), despite losing both ends of yesterday's doubleheader at Chicago. Game 2 was really troubling, as the Tigers blew a 7-1 lead. Kenny Rogers gets the start Wednesday, in an effort to stop the bleeding. Should Detroit be worried? Rogers has been hit hard in his last two starts, allowing 14 hits and 10 ERs in just 11.1 innings (7.94). Here's why I'm not that concerned. Detroit was 24-9 (plus-$1,363) in Rogers' regular season starts in '06 and he then went 3-0 in the postseason, throwing 23 scoreless innings. Let's also remember that Rogers, whose first start of '07 didn't come until June 22, opened the year with three straight wins, while allowing two ERs in 17.1 innings (1.04). In five starts against the White Sox in 2006, Rogers went 3-1 with a 0.82 ERA (team was 4-1) and tonight faces a Chicago team that's 10-20 (minus-$1,165) vs left-handers in '07, averaging 4.1 RPG. Meanwhile, the White Sox will counter with Jose Contreras, who has lost his last five starts, while posting an 8.24 ERA. He's also 1-8 with a 7.57 ERA over his last 10. Contreras' 21 losses since the 2006 All-Star break are the most in the majors during that span. Detroit 'feasts' on lefties but here's a righty the Tigers will have little trouble with. Let's also remember, Detroit leads all of MLB in team BA (.288) plus runs scored (576) and those numbers have come against both lefties AND righties. MLB Blowout of the Week 15* Det Tigers.

Good Luck..Larry
