Hondo
July 26, 2007 -- Hondo threw the no-blood splitter last night, scor ing with the Rangers and flopping with the Pirates to leave the deficit holding at a crisp 665 davenports.

Tonight, Mr. Aitch will slap his kiss of death on Gabbard - 10 units on the Bosawx. Also, 10 on Haren and the A's.

Chicago Cubs (-110)
Thu Jul 26 '07 8:10p

After watching the first two games of this series, it's clearly evident that STL just doesn't have the horses to run with the Cubs at this point in time. Tuesday night's game saw the Cubs overcome a 2-1 deficit, and pull off the 4-3 victory behind a solid effort from the bullpen. Wednesday night saw the same men in blue take it to the Cards hottest pitcher in the month of July and cruise to the 7-1 victory. Chicago is humming on all cylinders right now, and they now sit just two games in back of the division leading Brewers who lost again last night to Cincinnati. The Brew Crew plays early on this afternoon so the Cubbies will know full well whether a win will inch them a game that much closer, or if they need to hold serve to keep pace. Since getting off to a fast start as a starter this season, Braden Looper has fallen on hard times losing two of his L/3 starts while allowing 23 hits and 13 ER's in only 15.1 innings of work. He beat the Cubs way back in April, but that's when he was hot and the Cubs most certainly were not!!! It's retribution time baby!!! Jason Marquis has already beat his former mates twice this season, and you know how the saying goes....everything comes in 3's. I'm a firm believer in that belief, and I'm also a firm believer in the fact that the hottest team in baseball will whip out the brooms and sweep their most hated rivals. Then they'll head to Cincy and become big Redbird fans as they host the Brew Crew for a three game set starting Friday night. Lay the short chalk with the Cubbies as they hold the upper hand on the mound, in the dugout, and in the bullpen.

San Diego Padres vs. Houston Astros

Revenge Game Of The Week! - Thursday
Houston w/Rodriguez over San Diego w/Wells Astros send Wandy Rodriguez up against David Wells and the Padres in the opener of this four-game series tonight in Houston. Key stat here is Rodriguez's home road dichotomy, where his home ERA is a super sharp 1.81 as opposed to a gaudy 7.43 ERA on the road this season. With Wells sporting a lousy 6.25 road ERA (opposed to 3.55 at home) this season, look for Rodriguez to improve to 8-2 in his home team starts here this evening.

Pick: Houston

Big Al McMordie

Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Indians

On Tuesday night Dice-K Matsuzaka battled CC Sabathia on the mound and the Red Sox came out of it with a hard fought 1-0 victory. On Wednesday night the score was the same as Fausto Carmona went toe-to-toe with Josh Beckett, only this time it was the Indians who prevailed. The combined number of wins on the season for those four starters (including the aforementioned games) is an amazing 51. Tonight it's back to reality as the Sox lefthanded second-year man Kason Gabbard will face Cleveland's lefthanded veteran Cliff Lee. The combine number of 2007 wins for these two is nine. Gabbard is trying to show that he belongs on the big club and in fact, in the rotation, when veteran Curt Schilling comes back around August 1. And so far, Gabbard is speaking loud and clear with a 4-0 record, 2.97 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Gabbard has proven to be extremely stingy when it comes to giving up hits and in fact in his last three starts, he has only surrendered an amazing total of nine hits in over twenty-two innings. Lee has been the anti-Gabbard in his last three outings and the Indians have to be concerned with his performance as they try and stay in the pennant chase with a very hot Detroit squad. If there is any reason for hope, it is that Lee is a respectable 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA in six career starts vs. the Sox. But he has never been in this kind of a funk before when he had to face them.

Take Boston.

As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians
Thursday, July 26th, 7:05 P.M. EDT

Cleveland offense has gone south in this series with just three runs scored in three games. BOSTON is 21-11 UNDER vs. a good bullpen that converts on 75%+ of their save opportunities this season. CLEVELAND is 62-36 UNDER vs. AL teams allowing 4.2 or less runs/game in the second half of the season since 1997.

Thursday, July 26th, 7:05 P.M. EST EST

Boston has won 5 of their last 6 games. In their last 27 games played on Thursday's the Red Sox are a money making 21-6. They are 16-7 in their last 23 games as a road favorite. Boston has won 6 of Gabbard's last 8 starts. Cleveland has lost 4 of their last 6 games vs. AL East opponents. The Indians have lost Lee's last 3 starts. In Lee's 3 career home starts vs. Boston, the Indians are 1-2. The Indians are 2-4 in the 6 meetings between the clubs this season. Boston has won 8 of their last 11 visits to Cleveland.

Tonight I will give you another RUN LINE winner of the Yankees over the Royals. New York ran their winning streak to 6 in a row last night, all 6 of those wins coming by 2 runs or more.
Reason to buck the trend, as the Yankees are swinging the bats with conviction and will more than make up for their weak link in the starting rotation with Kei Igawa on the hill. There is no doubt in the G-Man's mind the Royals will get a few runs tonight as they look to avoid the 4-game sweep, but with starter Jorge De La Rosa sporting an ERA over 5 for the year, you just know it is only a matter of time before the Yankees' hit brigade gets double-digits tonight.
The Yanks are within 6 1/2 games of first place now, and I don't see a letup tonight.

Play New York on the RUN LINE.

Bobby Maxwell
Boston at CLEVELAND (-110)

Cleveland beat Boston 1-0 Wednesday and today the Indians get to face Red Sox rookie Kason Gabbard (4-0, 2.97 ERA). The Indians have got lefty Cliff Lee (5-7, 5.95) on the hill today.
Gabbard has had success this month but he's gotten a lot of help from his offense. Last time out he gave up one run on three hits as the Red Sox routed Chicago 11-2. But this kid on the road hasn't been very effective, posting a 5.59 ERA.
Lee has been horrible in his last three starts but the Indians have gone 5-2 in his home outings this season. He is 2-2 against the Red Sox with a 3.72 ERA and last time he saw them he allowed three runs on six hits over five innings.
When Lee gives up his standard three runs today, it'll be good enough to get a win as the Indians' offense lights up Gabbard and the Red Sox. Play Cleveland to put some runs on the board and win this one.

2? CLEVELAND

Sports Gambling Hotline
Boston at CLEVELAND (pick)

The last pair of games the Red Sox and Indians have played have both been tight 1-0 finals, the teams splitting the pair.
We like the Indians and their strong home field 35-17 mark to manage the 4-game split with the Red Sox.
It will be Kason Gabbard and Cliff Lee, and we don't expect another 1-0 final, as Lee has really struggled of late. Still, after facing the flame-throwing Fausto Carmona last night, we feel the southpaw Lee will benefit from following Carmona this evening at the Jake.
Kason Gabbard is 4-0 this year, but all 4 of his wins have come at Fenway Park where his ERA is a skinny 2.03. On the road, Gabbard has yet to record a decision in a pair of starts, but note his ERA stands at 5.59.
Lee took a loss to Boston back on May the 28th working 5 innings while allowing 3 runs to cross. Look for him to make amends with a solid start tonight at home.

Play on the Tribe.

Michael Cannon
LA Dodgers (-130) at COLORADO

Take the Dodgers for the road win over the Rockies.
The Dodgers were stymied last night, 2-1 by the Astros. I have a feeling they will break out tonight in the thin air of Coors.
Penny will start for the Dodgers and he's been spectacular this season. The right-hander is 12-1 with a 2.42 ERA in 20 games. Penny has made a living against the Rockies in his career, going 11-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 games.
Colorado will start Rodrigo Lopez and the right-hander is starting to cool off after a fast start to the season. I don't see him outpitching Penny here, even if it is at home.
Take the Dodgers as the road chalk for the win.

2? LA DODGERS

Dave Cokin
Take "(904) CIN Reds"

The Brewers have been money at home this season, but this is still a very beatable team on the road. Dave Bush has mediocre away numbers and his ledger vs. Cincy is not good. Lefty Bobby Livingston has been a nice surprise for the Reds, and I think he's worth backing while he's flashing this form, particularly as a home dog. I'll chance the Reds for my Thursday free opinion.

Jim Feist
Take "(906) PHI Phillies"

The Phillies have been on a very nice run here of late and have quietly come withing five games of division leading New York Mets. The Phils have won four straight, five of seven and eight of their last 12 games. The Nationals have been very bad on the road, especially of late where they have lost 10 of their last 13 games. The pithing matchup doesn't overly excite us here, but we have a Phillies club which has confidence against a team that struggles on the road. We'll lay the fairly high price here today with the Phillies.

Ben Burns' CFL "Best Bet" WINNER **16-5 (76%) L21 pro football -- Thursday

I'm taking the points with MONTREAL. Toronto is sure to be a popular "public" pick here. After all the Argos have the better record AND they are also playing at home. However, there are several reasons why I expect the Alouettes to step up and score the upset. For starters, this game is more important to Montreal as they can't afford to keep falling further behind in Eastern Conference standings. More importantly, the Als have had an entire week between games, as they played a home game last Thursday. Meanwhile, the Argos are playing on a short week as they played out West (at Calgary) last Saturday. It's also worth mentioning that while both teams lost last week, Montreal was arguably more impressive. Indeed, the Als lost by only two points (20-18) while the Argos got smoked 33-10, with their lone touchdown coming as time expired. Note that the Argos were outgained by a 464-203 margin in terms of total yards. On the other hand, the Als held a 409-352 edge in their game. The Als should have a major advantage at the quarterback position. Anthony Calvillo has been of the best quarterbacks in the league for years and he has seemingly hit his stride. Last week, he went an impressive 33 for 38 (87%!) while passing for a whopping 354 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Conversely, the two Toronto "backup" quarterbacks (Allen and McMahon) were a combined 14 of 32 (44%) for a mere 186 yards. The Als are 11-7-1 ATS their last 19 road games. They are also 5-1 SU/ATS their last six visits to Toronto and 10-4 SU/ATS their last 14 trips here. Look for those numbers to improve this evening as the defending Eastern Conference champs rise to the occasion and play their best game of the young season

SARATOGA Race #SIX (3:30 PM Eastern)

( # 4) WESTERN BLUFF - Three back he was beaten back into second by Wheels Up At Noon, who is developing into a very nice horse. Ran to a second-place finish this past Saturday in a stake at Delaware. Throw out his last in the slop, and his two tries for trainer Breen off the claim are acceptable. Think he'll run well today at a square price.
(# 2) Turkish Victory - Trainer Dollase traditionally has a couple of winners at this meet. His horses are geared towards speed tries and this runner looks primed to go as far as he can from the nice cozy draw. This is his first time tagged and second off a layoff.
(# 9) Star Studded - Appears to be racing into shape, and last pair represented his two best to this point. Clearly likes grass racing, and has a nice drill on July 18.
(# 's 3 and 10) Lgt. Point and Copy That - In a wide-open race like this, these horses should be used in bottoms of tri's, or exacta boxes with the top two picks.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are having serious troubles winning ball games. They are 5-22 in their last 27 games overall. Starting pitching has been their down fall the whole time. Edwin Jackson will not help matters tonight. Jackson is 2-9 with a 6.65 ERA during his 2007 campaign. He has given up 109 hits in 86 innings with a terrible WHIP of 1.81. Baltimore is 6-0 in their last 6 meetings with Tampa Bay in 2007. The Devil Rays are 16-64 in their last 80 games as a road underdog. The Orioles are 5-0 in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 39-13 in their last 52 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400. Cash in with Baltimore.

The Chicago Cubs are the hottest team in baseball since June 3rd. Everything is clicking and they have the advantage today on the mound with Marquis vs. Looper. The Cubs are 13-7 in Marquis’ 20 starts in 2007 and he has just a 3.92 ERA for the year. Braden Looper features a 7.63 ERA over his last 3 starts and over a 5.00 ERA on the season. The Cubs will touch him up for at least 5 runs tonight with the way they have been hitting the ball. The Cubs have won 4 straight over St. Louis. The Cubs are 8-0 in their last 8 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cubs are 7-1 in Marquis' last 8 starts vs. National League Central. The Cardinals are 1-5 in Looper's last 6 starts following a team loss in their previous game. Bet Chicago tonight.

Pick: New York Yankees -153

What else can be said? The Royals were beating up on everyone. They came into this series having taken series against three top teams, Seattle, LA Angels and Detroit. The Yankees right now are a team that is as hot as an offense gets. It's what happens when an All-Star lineup gets hot at the same time. It's a lineup right now that can out-hit their pitching. Kei Igawa has been bad, but so has DelaRosa. Igawa has actually out-pitched him recently, but one thing for sure, the Royals are not going to out-hit the Yankees right now. Going to ride this train ‘til it derails, which doesn't appear to be anytime soon. The Yankees were 21-29 on May 29, 14.5 games in back of the Red Sox, and left for dead. They are 33-17 since, and have made up eight games, Yankees sweep the four-game series.

MLB DUNKEL

Oakland at Seattle
The Mariners should be glad to get home after dropping six straight on the road, including yesterday's 7-6 loss against the Rangers in which closer J.J. Putz blew his first save opportunity after converting 31 straight. Facing league ERA leader Dan Haren (11-3, 2.41) isn't an easy assignment, but the M's are the only team to beat him twice this season. Overall Seattle has won seven of nine against the A's this year and starter Jeff Weaver has pitched solidly enough in recent weeks (2-1, 2.43 ERA in last six starts) to make the Mariners a good underdog pick (+133) according to Dunkel, which has Seattle favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Padres left-hander David Wells is a perfect 2-0 in three career starts against the Astros, despite carrying an inflated 5.71 ERA. EDGE: PADRES & OVER
Wells has struggled mightily on the road in 2007, going 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in eight road starts this season. He’s allowed an incredible 60 hits in just 40 1/3 innings away from Petco Park. EDGE: ASTROS

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (8:10 PM ET)

Chicago’s Jason Marquis is a perfect 3-0 with a sparkling 2.08 ERA in five career outings versus St. Louis. He picked up back-to-back victories over the Cardinals in consecutive starts this year in April, allowing three earned runs and 12 hits in 13 2/3 innings. EDGE: CUBS

The Cardinals are 7-1 in Looper’s last eight starts versus the NL Central.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies (9:05 PM ET)

MLB Betting Notes

Thursday’s MLB betting notes

Saito set to return

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Takashi Saito could return from a shoulder injury in time to pitch in Thursday’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies. The Japanese righty played catch on flat ground for over an hour on Monday after missing the previous six games.

"We like the way he felt out there," Dodgers manager Grady Little told the Los Angeles Daily News. "I am feeling pretty optimistic he will be available on Thursday."

Saito is having a fantastic season as the Dodger’s closer and has managed 25 saves and just three blown saves so far. He has pitched nearly 40 innings and has an ERA of 1.59.

With the dominant Brad Penny (12-1, 2.42 ERA) taking the mound on Thursday against the Rockies, there’s a good chance Saito will be called into action. Colorado counter with Rodrigo Lopez (5-3, 4.46) and is a +114 underdog with the total set at 9 ½.

Tigers relief

The Detroit Tigers bullpen has been solid in July, tallying a 4-1 record with a 2.41 ERA in 18 games. But it’s about to get a whole lot better as both Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney gear up to return in the coming weeks.

On Monday, Zumaya threw off the mound for the first time since an injured finger landed him on the DL in May. Meanwhile, Rodney had a throwing session on Tuesday and looks set to begin a rehab assignment this week, probably with Triple-A Toledo.

"It is no slam dunk that everything is perfect," manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com. "We think it is. It looks good. But do we know that for sure? No, I'm not that smart. When you get a hitter in there and he starts to put a little more on it, you don't know what is going to happen."

The Tigers, without their two ace relievers, close out a four-game series against the White Sox on Thursday with ace Justin Verlander set to start. He will face Chicago’s John Danks and oddsmakers have Detroit listed as a –159 favorite.

Pirates can’t blame pitchers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost nine of their last 10 games, but it’s not the pitching staff’s fault. As reported on MLB.com, the Pirates starters have allowed two runs or less in 47 of the team’s 97 games this season.

Their bullpen has also done its share. The relievers have managed 23 saves this season and posted a 2.33 ERA in nine games since the All-Star break.

"That kind of had me reared back on my seat in the airplane yesterday," Pirates manager JimTracy told MLB.com. "Case in point – our weekend this past weekend, where the opposition scores three runs in two days and beats us twice."

Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh’s batters have struggled badly this year. They have a combined .251 average with 78 homers and 398 runs scored – the second worst record in the majors.

On Thursday, they face New York Mets starter Oliver Perez looking to improve that form in the finale of a three-game series. The Pirates counter with Paul Malholm and are +180 underdogs with the total set at 8 ½.

Chopping and changing

With everyday centerfielder Jason Pence on the DL with a wrist injury, the Houston Astros will rotate players through that position on a day-to-day basis depending on particular matchups.

The bulk of the time will probably go to Jason Lane, who posted a .165 average in two months with Houston earlier this season. He was demoted to Triple-A Round Rock in June, but has been handed a second chance after hitting .308 with eight homers in 42 games there.

But manager Phil Garner has said that he will also use shortstop Eric Bruntlett and outfielder Chris Burke in the centerfield position to maximize the team’s offense.

With Lane likely to make the start in centerfield, the Astros take on the Padres on Thursday in the first of a three-game series. Wandy Rodriguez (6-9, 4.446) will face David Wells (5-6, 4.57) on the mound and San Diego is a +106 underdog.

Timlin back at his best

Veteran Red Sox pitcher Mike Timlin looks to be back to his best after struggling with injuries last year. The 41-year-old setup man has not given up a run in his last 16 innings of work and boasts a 3.31 ERA for the season.

"When he's going good, I can't tell what he's throwing," Boston manager Terry Francona told MLB.com. "From the dugout, you can't tell. That's what I told him last night. I said, 'You're back to where I can't tell.' And I meant that in a good way. When he's throwing good, I just don't know what he's throwing."

Timlin will likely be called upon again on Thursday when the Red Sox look for the series win over the Cleveland Indians. Kason Gabbard (4-0, 2.97) will face Cliff Lee (5-7, 5.95) on the mound and the Red Sox are a –107 favorite.

Rodriguez will try for No. 500 on Thursday against Jorge De La Rosa, who surrendered career homer No. 400 to Rodriguez a little over two years ago.

SEASONS
July 26

1928 - Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees hit for the cycle for the third time in his career. The Yankees scored 11 runs in the top of the 12th to beat the Detroit Tigers, 12-1, in 12 innings.

1939 - The New York Yankees tied a major league record by scoring in every inning against the St. Louis Browns. Bill Dickey hit three home runs in the 14-1 win.

1962 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves set the National League record for home runs by a pitcher when he hit his 31st off New York's Craig Anderson. Spahn dealt the Mets their 11th straight loss with a 6-1 victory.

1970 - Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds hit three straight homers off Steve Carlton of the St. Louis Cardinals. On the same day, Orlando Cepeda of the Atlanta Braves connected for three consecutive homers in an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

1984 - Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos tied Ty Cobb on the career singles list, No. 3,052, with a base hit in the eighth inning in a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1991 - Montreal's Mark Gardner became the first to pitch nine no-hit innings against a Dodger home team since Johnny Vander Meer beat Brooklyn at Ebbets Field on June 15, 1938, for his second straight gem. But the Dodgers won in the 10th on two singles off Gardner and Darryl Strawberry's RBI single off Jeff Fassero.

1998 - Trevor Hoffman's bid to set a major league record with 42 straight saves ended when the San Diego closer gave up a home run to Moises Alou on his first delivery in the ninth inning, tying the game. The Padres wound up beating Houston 5-4 in the 10th, but Hoffman blew his chance at history.

2005 - Greg Maddux recorded his 3,000th career strikeout against San Francisco, striking out Omar Vizquel in the third inning of a 3-2, 11-inning victory for the Giants.

Today's birthdays: Brandon Morrow 23; Joaquin Benoit 30.

Streaking Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOT

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) -The Tigers have scored at least 10 runs in each of Verlander's last three starts and each time, the Tigers came out on top. Bettors who like to play the over have taken advantage of the righty too by cashing in during each of his last four appearances. The Tigers finish off their series with the ChiSox as -163 road favorites and the total is set at 9 ½.

Kei Igawa (New York Yankees) - The Yankees' left-handed rookie has three straight no-decisions, but that hasn't stopped the Yanks from winning those contests. Igawa has lasted only five innings in each of his starts this month, but New York has found a way to go 3-0 in that span. Igawa is listed as a -159 favorite against the Royals.

Buddy Carlyle (Atlanta Braves) - Carlyle has been a real buddy to Braves backers recently. The righty has won three straight outings allowing six runs in his last 22 innings during that span. He has four strikeouts in less than four innings of work during two career relief appearances in San Francisco. Atlanta is listed as +119 underdogs today.

COLD

Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians) - The number on Lee's jersey is 31, but his record in July is 1-3. He's lost each of his previous three outings and his ERA during those appearances is nearly 11.00. His struggles have helped over bettors cash in each time during his personal losing skid. The Tribe host Boston as +101 dogs and the over/under is listed at 10 ½ runs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Baltimore Orioles: (-129, 10)

Steve Trachsel has been a pain in the butt for Orioles backers this season. It seems a month off wasn’t enough to get the right-hander healthy after hitting the DL with an injury to his gluteus muscle. Trachsel was served his seventh loss of the season last weekend when he made his return to action.

In his last five starts, Trachsel has an ERA above 9.00 and Baltimore suffered losses in all five games. Trachsel is 5-7 this year with a 5.05 ERA and has a 34-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Devil Rays had their way with Trachsel the last time he faced Tampa Bay. He was pounded for six runs on six hits in one of six games this season in which he has pitched fewer than five innings.

Pick: Devil Rays +121

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians: (+101, 10 ½)

BoSox young lefty Kason Gabbard takes his undefeated record on the road Thursday – a place where he is yet to record a win in his 13 games in the bigs.

Gabbard has two no-decisions on the road along with an overall 4-0 record and 2.97 ERA. Over his last three starts, Gabbard has allowed only three earned runs in more than 22 innings pitched.

"Gabby was effective because he was throwing strikes. Kason, lately, has been throwing more strikes and going right at hitters," first baseman Kevin Youkilis told the Berkshire Eagle after Gabbard’s most recent win. "He's been getting the breaking ball and changeups over, and keeping guys off balance."

Last season Gabbard was 0-2 in three road starts with an ERA of 4.73.

Pick: Red Sox -109

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies: (+116, 10)

The pressure is on the Dodgers rotation to pitch perfectly, deep into games because star closer Takashi Saito injured his shoulder. But you can exclude staff ace Brad Penny from this list. He’s been doing that all season.

Penny, who ranks third in the MLB money standings this season (10.91 units, or if you wagered $100 on all of his starts, you’d be up $1,091), leads the National League in quality starts with 17. He is averaging 6 ½ innings per start and has pitched fewer than six innings only twice this year.

Penny is 11-2 lifetime versus Colorado with a 2.59 ERA. In his last appearance against the Rockies, Penny gave up only two hits and no runs.

Pick: Dodgers -122

1 Unit on Baltimore -129 (Listing Trachsel and Jackson) The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are having serious troubles winning ball games.

Game: Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets Jul 26 2007 12:10PM

Prediction: New York Mets

Reason: Pittsburgh lost at the NY Mets last night, 3-6. They're in one of the biggest slumps in MLB, losing 9 of their last 10 games, and now stay in New York for the final game of a 3-game series on Thursday afternoon. Expecting them to get swept on Thursday as we find them at 0-4 as Dogs of 170 or higher following a loss which they allowed 6 Runs or more this season! A great early afternoon game to use in your parlays.

New York Yankees (54-46) at Kansas City Royals (43-57)
(L) Kei Igawa (2-2) vs. (L) Jorge De La Rosa (7-10)

New York's left-hander Kei Igawa (2-2, 6.67) allowed two runs on seven hits and striking out six over five innings in a 7-3 win against Tampa Bay on Saturday, but did not factor in the decision. Igawa is 0-2 with an 8.13 ERA in seven starts. He has never faced the Royals.

Kansas City's left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (7-10, 5.61 ERA), allowed seven runs over 4 1/3 innings in a 10-8 loss to the Tigers in his last start on Saturday. De La Rosa has lost his last two starts allowing 10 runs over 7 2/3 innings. He is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees.

Kansas City has lost five of their last 7 games at Kauffman Stadium and five of the last six versus the Yankees at home. The total has gone over in 11 of the last 14 meetings.

Both teams will have erratic and struggling lefties on the hill tonight. Take the New York Yankees in a high scoring game. New York has won seven of the last 8 versus Kansas City.

(R) Micah Owings

Take the Diamondbacks to beat-up on the Marlins again tonight at Chase Field. Arizona’s rookie Micah Owings is 0-4 with a 7.30 ERA in his last five starts, but is 3-2 with a 3.18 ERA in nine appearances, including eight starts at home. Arizona has won five straight games and five of its last 6 at home. Meanwhile, Florida has lost four of their last 5 road games and right-hander Byung-Hyun Kimona has not had much success against the Marlins. Kimona is 1-5 with an 8.56 ERA in eight career appearances against Arizona, 0-3 with a 10.91 ERA at Chase Field in five career outings, including three starts.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds u9.5 (-105)
Thu Jul 26 '07 12:35p
Brewers, Reds to slide Under 9.5 (-105)
Both David Bush of the Milwaukee Brewers and Bobby Livingston of the Cincinnati Reds are in good form right now, so we look for a rather low-scoring affair today.
Bush has now reeled off five Quality Starts in his last six starts overall, and he is starting to dispel the notion that he cannot pitch on the road, as two of those outings came away from home. Livingston has a nice 3.52 ERA in four starts, allowing three runs or less in his last three outings. The southpaw has never faced Cincinnati before, which should make him doubly tough.

Finally, for the trend-lovers out there, the Under is now 28-12 the last 40 times that Milwaukee was a road favorite in the 125-150 range, so go Under again.

Brewers, Reds Under 9.5 (-105)

New York Yankees @ Kansas City Royals u11.5 (-115)
Thu Jul 26 '07 8:10p
Yankees and Royals to sneak Under bloated total
At first glance, one would expect a slugfest when the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals square off tonight in Kansas City. After all, Kei Igawa of the Yankees enters this contest with a 6.67 ERA, while Jorge de la Rosa of the Royals comes in at 5.61.
However, a deeper look reveals that this contest could easily slip Under this fat posted total of 11.5. Yes, Igawa pitches up in the strike zone way too often, but he has shown some marked improvement recently, allowing two and three runs in his last two starts respectively. Granted he was pulled after five innings after each start, but there is nothing wrong with employing that strategy again here.
This is because the previously maligned Yankee bullpen has really come around nicely, in fact now ranking 10th in the Major Leagues with a 3.67 pen ERA. Thus, it is no coincidence that the Yanks have limited the Royals to a total of seven runs in the first three games of this series, and are allowing just 3.90 runs per game in the last 10 games. Furthermore, if you toss out one 14-run explosion by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Bombers allowed just 2.78 runs per game in the other nine games.
We would not be surprised to see the Royals held to three runs or less tonight, meaning that the Yankees could score eight runs and this game would still stay Under. Now de la Rosa was hit hard by the red-hot Detroit Tigers offense in his last start, but he had allowed three runs or less in each of his previous four starts. Besides, it is not as if de la Rosa is without ability despite his ERA, as he has allowed three runs or less in 12 of his 20 starts this season. New York is well aware of just how good de la Rosa can be, as he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings at the Yankees while allowing just six hits in his only career starts against them last season.
Finally, the Royals bullpen has also come a long way since the start of the season, as they are now in the top half of the majors with a 3.88 pen ERA. Yes, the Royals are still allowing a rather high 5.60 runs per game over the last 10 contests, but a comparable performance here would probably still be good enough to keep this game Under this inflated number.

Yankees, Royals Under 11.5 (-115)

4* ATLANTA/SAN FRANCISCO 1st Half Under 4.5

We did not have to sweat much in cashing an easy ticket with this concept between these teams last night, and we look for more of the same here – two starting pitchers bring excellent form to the table as well as the advantage of the opposing offenses not having seen them, but this time an added factor as well, with the awkward shadows from this unusual starting time also working in the pitcher’s favor the first couple of passes through the lineup.

No one is throwing a baseball any better than Tim Lincecum right now. After struggling with his poise as so many pitchers do on the first call up he has settled down to show the kind of stuff that makes him one of the best young right-handers in the sport. Over his last five starts it has been a sparkling 3-0/1.05 and there is not a fluke to be found inside of the numbers – a dominating ratio of 41 strikeouts vs. only 19 hits allowed tells it all. From this mound he has not allowed a single run in his last two starts, covering a total of 14 innings, and it has been 20 strikeouts vs. only seven hits allowed. On the first look against him, expect the Braves to be overpowered.

Buddy Carlyle will not exactly overpower the Giants, but he can get it done with finesse against them. He has worked to a 4-0/2.25 tune over his last five starts, and has turned those tricks by throwing strikes – he has walked only three batters in 32 innings in that span. And while he does not bring the explosive stuff of Lincecum, a ratio of 21 K’s vs. those three walks gets it done in any league. There is nothing special at all about the way that the Giants are swinging the bats these days, so if you do not walk anyone they do not find it easy to reach the scoreboard.

Larry Ness' 20* NL Total of the Month (21-8 or 72% TY with MLB totals!)

A 'Putz' (1st blown save TY!) cost Larry a 3-0 sweep last night but his 2-1 Wednesday gave him exactly 250 plays in MLB this season. He's won 165 or 66%! Very selectively, Larry's released only 29 MLB totals, winning 21 or 72%! His 20* NL Total of the Month goes tonight and it's "not to be missed!"

3* on Chicago Cubs -104 (Listing Marquis) The Chicago Cubs are the hottest team in baseball since June 3rd.
