Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on vacation for a month in Long Island (Southampton) and keen to play the best courses.

Am due to turn up at Bethpage next Wednesday having played Long Island National, Swan Lake and Cheery Creek this week.

Anyone have any good courses to recommend? Price not important.

Is there any way to get on at Shinnecock?

Thanks

Since you are out that way..Here's one

Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course

50 S. Fairview Ave.
Montauk, NY 11954-5240
631-668-1100

Ok, here's the deal: You'll need to budget an entire day to play this course, as it is located at the furthest point east on Long Island and takes an eternity to get to. If you drive into the Atlantic Ocean, you've gone to far, but not by much. Your reward for the lengthy jaunt along Route 27 is one of the most scenic and fun, not to mention challenging, courses imaginable. The course is tucked on piece of land between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, meaning wind. Lots of it, all the time. Montauk Downs is annually rated in Golf Digest as one of the top 50 public golf courses in the country. The signature hole? Just about all of them.

Here's another one Par 71

The Woods at Cherry Creek

967 Reeves Ave.
Riverhead, NY 11901
631-506-0777

The Woods is the newer, and more challenging of the two courses that make up Cherry Creek Golf Links. It opened in 2002, six years after the Links courses, and features heavily tree-lined fairways that offer a secluded feel for the player. At 6,565 yards from the tips, the Woods is not exceptionally long and the trees do hide some of the wind. However the number of gentle doglegs and water holes restrict the use of the driver for the skilled player. It is more of a shotmaker's course.
Hours

Open weekends only.
Course

18 holes, par 71

Blue: 6,565
White: 6,306
Yellow: 5,703

Wow, very nice. I go there most every year (southhampton) with my wifes family as they have a place there. I went up to Riverhead for some golf on the cheap with the father-in-law at Cherry Creek (I GOT A 4 on the PAR 6). ENJOY.

Also, since you are going to Bethpage which is Nassau

You might want to try one of my Favs....

Harbor Links Golf Course

1 Fairway Dr.
Port Washington, NY 11050-4669
516-767-4816
Fax: 516-767-4812

Harbor Links, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, was built in 1998 on a reclaimed sand mine adjacent to water. It has some interesting features, including a stabilized sand bluff with teeing areas that step up a steep slope. Three holes have split fairways, which allow the golfer a choice off the tee. Holes 12 and 13 sit on an area that was used for tailings from the mine and look very similar to a western style desert course. The nine-hole executive course is a still challenge for skilled golfers yet comfortable for the beginner, too.
Hours

Sunrise-sunset daily except Mon., 8 a.m-sunset.

Thanks for all your help.

Have found The Links at Shirley on that discoverlongisland link which looks great.

It's painful staying 5 minutes from Shinnecock and not being able to play!

Any course during July/August is going to be real hard to get on east of Riverhead . Believe me, I lived in the Hamptons for 7 years and tried many a time.

I have personally played about 1/2 dozen times. 3 months during the year they shut the place down, I had a nice hookup with the people fixing the place, went right on nobody said nothing.
some good memories

I rate shirley as average when I played ..but thats me..

your gonna love the black course when you play at bethpage.......
