Analysis:
I think the REDS are offering solid value as a slight home underdog on Friday. Arroyo's record (4-11) is admittedly pretty horrible. However, his ERA has been getting lower and lower lately, as he's been pitching a lot better than his record would lead one to believe. Since June 24, Arroyo has made six starts, lasting a minimum of six complete innings each time out, while going seven innings four times. During that span, he allowed three earned runs or less in five of six starts, allowing four in the sixth start. Cubs starter Rich Hill has been going the opposite direction. Since starting the season with a 4-1 record and 1.73 ERA, he's cooled off significantly. In fact, he's allowed five earned runs or more in three of his last six starts. The Cubs are coming off a deflating double-digit loss to the defending World Champions while the Reds are coming off a momentum-building comeback 10th inning win over the Brewers. Consider a play on CINCINNATI

July 27, 2007 -- Hondo made a couple of strong moves last night as he went to the winner's circle with the Bosawx and A's to slash the negative number to 565 figue roas.

Tonight, he'll reboard the Jays' bandwagon - 10 units on Towers. Also, 10 on Pettitte to enhance his gaudy CAREER-vs.-OPP number against the Orioles

Vegas Experts
Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians
Friday, July 27th, 7:05 P.M. EDT

Cleveland starter Byrd 23-6 as home favorite over the past three seasons. Minnesota has dropped four straight, five in a row on the road and is 7-17 against the money line vs. AL teams scoring 5.2 or more runs/game on the season this season and 2-10 against the money line vs. a starting pitcher whose gives up 7 or more hits/start this season.

Play on: Cleveland

Friday, July 27th, 7:05 P.M. EST EST

O's have won four straight and six in a row at home and have the advantage of staying home after finishing off a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay while the Yankees travel from Kansas City. The YANKEES are 30-36 against the money line vs. an AL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.300 or better over the last 2 seasons and starter PETTITTE is 9-21 against the money line vs. teams whose hitters strike out 6 or less times/game over the last 2 seasons. Toronto (+120) at WHITE SOX

The White Sox won 3 of the last 4 of their 5-game set with the Tigers and appear to have a little momentum going as the entertain Toronto this evening.
Problem is, the Blue Jays have some momentum of their own, as the Jays bring a 5-game winning streak into the Windy City, and are over .500 and thinking possible wild card right now.
We will side with the underdog Blue Jays in this spot as Jon Garland is off a bad-looking loss at Boston his last time out, and sports a losing record at US Cellular this season at 3-5 with a 4.59 ERA.
Josh Towers has had his struggles on the road this year, but as you can see by his 7 shutout innings his last trip to the mound in a home win against Seattle, this kid can pitch.
Toronto won 3 of 4 earlier this year at home against the Sox, and we like them plus money tonight to extend their winning streak to 6 straight.

Play the Jays.

3♦ TORONTO

Michael Cannon
Minnesota at CLEVELAND (-145)

Lay the chalk with Cleveland tonight over Minnesota.
The Tribe just finished their four-game series with the Red Sox, losing three of the games.
I like them to bounce back tonight over the Twins.
Paul Byrd gets the start for Cleveland and he's 7-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 13 career games against the Twins.
Minnesota will counter with Boof Bonser and I expect the Indians to tee off on him.
Take Cleveland as they bounce back with the home win tonight.

3♦ CLEVELAND

Karl Garrett
Minnesota at CLEVELAND (-150)

Tonight I expect the Minnesota slump to continue, as the Twins bring a 4-game slide into Jacobs Field to face a Cleveland team that just got their hats handed to them 3 of 4 games against Boston.
The Indians are still 35-18 at home, while the Twins are a disappointing 23-26 on the highway this season. Minnesota dropped 3 earlier season series meetings at Cleveland, in fact they have lost ALL 5 meetings against the Tribe this year!
Paul Byrd does own one of those five wins, as Byrd beat the Twins in the middle of May although he did surrender 5 runs in his 7 innings of work. That has been Byrd's MO this season, as he is 8-4, but does sport an ERA a little on the high side at 4.43.
Boof Bonser's ERA is a tad higher though, and Cleveland did have the bats cranking in their 14-9 loss to Boston.
Minnesota does not look as though they are ready to bust out of their funk, and Cleveland usually doesn't drop 3 of 4 at home, so lay the wood and roll with the Indians in this one.

2♦ CLEVELAND

Bobby Maxwell
San Diego at HOUSTON (+140)

It's former Padre Woody Williams (5-11, 5.03 ERA) on the mound for the Astros as they host San Diego and current ace Jake Peavy (9-5, 2.47).
San Diego has been in a funk lately, going 3-8 in its last 11 games as a favorite and 7-28 the last 35 times they've played on Friday.
Peavy has really struggled since the All-Star break losing both starts, and in his last three outing he is 0-3 with a 4.74 ERA. Last time out he allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings of a 9-0 loss to the Phillies. His offense hasn't been very supportive, scoring just two runs in his last three starts.
But then again Peavy hasn't been real sharp, giving up three runs or more in five of his last six outings. He saw the Astros twice last season and split the two games.
Woody Williams was magnificent in his last start, blanking the Pirates on five hits over eight innings of a 1-0 win. And while Williams was a longtime Padre, the few times he faced them as a member of the Cardinals he beat them, going 4-0, never giving up more than three runs and always pitching at least seven innings.
He certainly knows his old team and will pitch a gem in this one. Play Williams and the Astros and enjoy the plus-money.

2♦ HOUSTON

Dave Cokin
Take "(961) LA Dodgers"

It seems as though every year you can bank on Brett Tomko to have one hot run where he turns into a world beater. That stretch may be taking place right now. Tomko has had two solid efforts back to back and he's facing a Colorado entry that he had his single best game of the year against earlier this season. In that effort, Tomko threw six frames of one hit, no run, nine K ball. Josh Fogg is also in good form for the Rockies off his last two outings. But I like the idea of the Dodgers with the number where it is for this contest, so LA is the play.

Jim Feist
Take "Under"

Both of Friday's pitchers have really pitched much better than their respective records have reflected. The Tigers' Nate Robertson is just 6-7 on the season with a 4.72 era. Not only has Robertson given up just 12 earned runs in his last five starts, but three of his last four games have gone UNDER. Meanwhile, the Angels have lost five of Jared Weaver's last six starts. But you really can't blame the young right-hander as he's given up just nine earned runs in those six games. On the season, Weaver is 6-5 and has a very respectable 3.30 era. Two pitchers here today that are much better than their records, add to that a pair of above average bullpens and this looks like a very good UNDER selection

Big Al Mcmordie
Game: Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies Jul 27 2007 7:05PM
Prediction: under
Reason: At 7:05pm our complimentary selection is on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies 'under' the total. It's hard to believe, but this is the first time these cross-state rivals have met each other this season. Last year they played six games, all before the break, and this year they will play all their contests after the break in 2007. These two teams are going in different directions, with the Phillies having won five of their last six games and the Pirates having won last night for only the second time in the last twelve games, this being their record since the All-Star break. But the Phillies just got a big piece of bad news as their All-Star second baseman and arguably their best all-around player, Chase Utley just landed on the DL for what will probably be four to six weeks with a broken hand. Look for their run production to take a big hit in light of this unfortunate circumstance. The Pirate offense doesn't have anybody even remotely as valuable as Utley, save perhaps outfielder Jason Bay. But with no real threat batting around him, Bay has been nothing more than a guy for pitchers to avoid this season. Pittsburgh's hitting has pretty much gone to sleep, and they have only scored more than four runs in two of the twelve games they've played since the break (the two games that they won). Ten of the last twelve games these two teams have played against each other have gone under the total. Take the 'under'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie

Game: Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Devil Rays Jul 27 2007 7:10PM
Prediction: Boston Red Sox
Reason: Time Wakefield the BoSox hurler for this contest against the TB Devil Rays, has won for the 4th time and 5 starts, and looks to be shaping into top form. The knuckle baller has owned the Drays over his career, as is evident by a 16-2 record along with a stingy 3.01 ERA in 33 appearances. With that said, look for his arm to help us bring home the cash in this spot. Final notes & Key Trends: TB is just 14-38 in their L/52 games as underdogs. Play on Boston

Tom Freese
Game: Milwaukee Brewers at St Louis Cardinals Jul 27 2007 8:10PM
Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers
Reason: Being traded from the Tigers to the Cardinals has not worked out for Mike Maroth as he has allowed 22 runs in his last 15 innings of work in his last 3 starts. Milwaukee is 14-3 in 17 starts made by Claudio Vargas this year. Vargas has been very consistent allowing 4 or less runs in 15 of his 17 starts this year. Play On Milwaukee (Vargas vs. Maroth)

Take Proposition 1 Special
At this week’s Canadian Open, take Mike Weir (8-1), 1/6 unit: In his last three tournaments he’s gone T20 (U.S. Open), T8 (AT&T National) and T8 (at last week’s British Open)---all high profile tournaments with strong fields. The Ontario native is trying to make it on the President’s Cup team, which will be held later this year in Montreal, and despite missing the cut the last two years he’s always played well at the Canadian Open (his best finish was a playoff loss to Vijay Singh in 2004). Take Vijay Singh (14-1), 1/6 unit: Singh’s been no slouch of late either with two top-10s in his last three tournaments (T27 at the Open last week). And he’s done pretty well in this tournament: since 2002 he’s gone T6, T6, P1 (over Weir) and T7 last year. Don’t look now but Vijay’s been putting well. Take John Rollins (40-1), 1/6 unit: Rollins won the tournament in 2002 and his only other win on Tour came at the B.C. Open last year. Currently 12th in FedEx Cup points, he’s had an excellent year with a handful of top-10s and 11 top-25s. Dependable

5-0 LAST RACE

After their first break since spring, the Nextel Cup Series returns this week with the All State 400 at the Brickyard. A lot has happened in just a week, in addition to ESPN taking over the television coverage it was announced that Ginn racing will be merging with Dale Earnhardt Inc. effective immediately. How all that will play out remains to be seen, but ESPN will probably have to spend a hour of their race coverage Sunday just to try to explain to the fans what exactly happened regarding this merger.

One thing remains certain, though, in these turbulent times and that is that Jeff Gordon (5/1 Bodog), Tony Stewart (11/2 at Bodog) and Jimmie Johnson (5/1 at Bodog) will all run well this weekend. Unless the racing Gods align perfectly and create an accident that takes out all three of these guys, one of them will be your race winner Sunday. Of the 12 NASCAR races run here, Jeff Gordon has won 4 of them - which is just amazing.

For my Sunday Speed Free Qualifying Pick I am going to be taking Casey Mears +125 over Kasey Kahne. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't find Gordon in any qualifying matchups, but Mears is a great substitute as he is a previous pole winner here and his open wheel experience should allow him to turn a pretty fast lap here in qualifying.

Reason: Peavy, 9-5 is on the mound tonight. The Padres are 13-7 on his 20 starts this season. SD is 11-4 in their last 15 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Padres are 9-2 in Peavy's last 11 starts following a team loss in the game before. The Padres are 5-2 in Peavy's alst 7 starts as the favorite. Williams is 5-11 on the year and Houston is 8-13 when he starts. The Astros are 5-11 in their last 16 games as the underdog. Houston is 3-8 in Williams last 11 starts with 4 days rest. Padres have the better pitcher on the mound and will win this one.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Minnesota (51-50) at Cleveland (59-43)
The Indians continue their 10-game homestand when they welcome the Twins to Jacobs Field for a three-game weekend series, with Cleveland’s Paul Byrd (8-4, 4.43 ERA) scheduled to face Boof Bonser (5-6, 4.53).
Cleveland opened its homestand by losing three of four to Boston, capped by Thursday’s 14-9 loss. The Indians are just 8-11 in their last 19 games, including 4-6 at home.
The Twins were idle on Thursday after getting swept in a three-game series at Toronto, getting outscored by a combined 26-5 margin. Minnesota is mired in a 2-7 slump and has lost five consecutive road games.
The Indians have won all five meetings against their A.L. Central rivals this season, including a three-game home sweep in May when they outscored the Twins 24-8.
Bonser has made three consecutive quality starts, posting a 3.43 ERA. He’s 0-1 during this stretch, but the Twins prevailed in his two no-decisions. The righthander is 2-3 with a 4.63 ERA on the road, giving up at least four runs in three of his last four as a visitor.
Bonser only career appearance against the Indians came in his rookie season last year, and he gave up three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, getting a no-decision in the Twins’ 9-4 win at Jacobs Field.
Byrd lasted just 5 2/3 innings in Sunday’s start at Texas, but gave up only two runs on three hits en route to an 8-3 win. Cleveland is 5-1 in Byrd’s last six starts, including 2-0 at home, where Byrd is 5-2 despite a beefy 5.67 ERA.
The veteran righthander has solid career numbers against the Twins, going 7-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 13 starts. One of those victories came back in mid-May at home, when Byrd got tagged for five runs in seven innings, but prevailed 15-7.
The under is 6-0-2 in Bonser’s last eight starts, with the last five in a row staying low.
Cleveland had stayed under the total in three straight games overall and four straight at home before last night’s game against the Red Sox easily hurdled the total. Also, the under is 7-3-1 in Minnesota’s last 11.
ATS ADVANTAGE: CLEVELAND and UNDER

Detroit (60-41) at L.A. Angels (58-42)
Two of the top teams in the American League kick off a three-game weekend series in Anaheim, with the Angels’ Jered Weaver (6-5, 3.30) set to battle the Tigers’ Nate Robertson (6-7, 4.63) tonight.
Los Angeles, which was idle on Thursday, comes into this series in a 3-7 slump, including dropping three of four at home. Still, the Halos own one of the best home records in baseball at 32-16.
Detroit heads west after going 2-3 in a five-game series in Chicago, including Thursday’s 4-3 defeat. The Tigers have followed a 10-2 run by going 3-5 in their last eight.
The Tigers hold a slim 3-2 edge in the season series, taking two of three in Southern California. The teams have combined for at least 12 runs in four of the five games, with all five going over the total.
Detroit is just 6-11 when Robertson pitches this year, including 2-6 in the last eight. In Sunday’s 5-2 loss at Kansas City, the southpaw gave up five runs (four earned) on 11 hits in six innings. He’s allowed at least four runs in five of his last eight outings.
Robertson is 2-4 with a 4.26 ERA in six road starts. Also, he’s 0-3 with an 8.13 ERA in six career starts against the Angels, with Detroit losing five of those six contests.
Weaver has given up just six earned runs and 24 hits in his last five starts spanning 31 1/3 innings (1.72 ERA), but he has just one win to show for it. In fact, the Angels have lost Weaver’s last four starts, scoring a grand total of eight runs during this stretch.
Weaver is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in seven home starts. The worst of those outings came against the Tigers April 23, when he yielded seven runs (five earned) in just 1 2/3 innings, losing 9-5.
The under is 4-0-1 in Weaver’s last five starts and 4-2-1 in Robertson’s last seven outings. However, the Tigers have topped the total in five of Robertson’s six lifetime starts against L.A.

MLB for 07/27/2007 - Rangers at Royals

Prediction: Royals

The Royals defeated the Yankees yesterday 7-0 to avoid a four-game sweep by New York. Kansas City has been a better home team the last two months going 11-7 in June and July. In his last outing, Texas starter Jamey Wright (3-2, 4.15 ERA) lasted only 3 1/3 innings as the right-hander walked six batters and was lifted. In fact, Wright has walked 20 batters in his last five starts. Brian Bannister's last start was a quality one. The Royals righty went seven innings giving up just four hits, one walk and one earned run in a 5-2 win at Detroit. Texas is a poor road team at 19-31 on the season. I don't normally like laying a number with a sub-.500 team, but I like Kansas City in this spot at -130. The Royals are still playing hard through the season. Take KC

Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds (MLB)
Jul 27, 2007 7:10 PM EDT

Play on Chicago w/ Hill

The Chicago Cubs roll into Cincinnati for a weekend series looking to avoid what happened to the Milwaukee earlier in the week when the Reds took 3 of 4 from the brew crew. Last night the Cubs got pounded by St. Louis 11-1 but did take 2 of 3 from their arch rivals to pull within only 2 games of the front running Brewers. The Cubs have made their backers some money on the road this season putting up a 26-23 record.

Tonight the Cubs will be facing veteran right-hander, Bronson Arroyo, who is having a horrible season with a 4-11 mark and high 4.58 ERA. He hasn't faired that well at home either going only 2-3 with an even higher 5.96 ERA. That will spell trouble for the veteran as the Cubs are a profitable 44-32 versus right-handed hurlers this season scoring an average of 5.0 runs per game while the team is hitting a respectable .277.

The Reds at 44-59 this year are 12 1/2 games out of first place and only 1/2 a game in front of Pittsburgh for cellar position in the NL Central. However, if this past series is any indication, they are looking to play the spoiler roll against their divisional rivals. Over the last three seasons when playing at home versus the Cubs they have posted a 10-9 record.

The Reds will be facing Cubs left-hander, Rich Hill who comes in at 6-6 overall with a decent 3.58 ERA. Cincinnati has really struggled versus lefties going 14-23 scoring 4.4 runs per game and hitting only .234 as a team.

SUPPORTING TRENDS: CHICAGO CUBS are 22-13 (+9.3 Units) against the money line in road games against right-handed starters this season. ARROYO is 1-9 (-8.5 Units) against the money line when the money line is +125 to -125 this season. ARROYO is 1-8 (-9.0 Units) against the money line against division opponents this season.

Chicago has feasted on righties this season while Cincinnati has struggled versus lefties. This is a perfect spot for the Cubs in this scenario. I'm taking the Cubs in this one.

MLB Betting Notes

Friday’s MLB betting notes

Opening with an ending

When the Yankees and the Orioles first trot onto the field on Friday night it will not be to open a four-game series, but instead to finish a game that started at the end of June.

That game was suspended in the eighth inning due to rain, just as the Yankees were pulling out a strong lead. It will pick up in the same inning on Friday with New York leading 8-6. At least the Orioles will be able to prepare their comeback in advance.

"Tomorrow, I'm going to get the boxscore and the lineups," manager Dave Trembley told MLB.com on Wednesday. "I'm going to look at the roster and see who's available. We might be able to add a couple guys because they weren't here when that was going on."

Both teams are expected to resume the game with the same pitchers on the mound. That means that Mike Myers (1-0, 2.41) will battle it out with Chris Ray (5-6, 4.43) over the two innings.

Playing through the pain

The Detroit Tigers are 11 games into a 17-game stretch without a day off and some of the regulars are starting to feel the strain. This week alone Ivan Rodriguez, Placido Polanco, Gary Sheffield and Carlos Guillen have all missed games with naggling injuries.

"Trust me, they are hurting," manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com. I'm very proud of them because all they do is play. They go out and play. They want to play and they're playing hurt and I can't tell you how proud I am. But, sooner or later, you have to give someone a blow. I'm doing that."

For Friday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, Leyland says he will have Rodriguez, Polanco and Guillen back in the lineup. Sheffield is a doubt as he continues to struggle with a sore right shoulder.

The Tigers send Nate Robertson (6-7, 4.63 ERA) to the mound for that game to face the Angel’s Jered Weaver (6-5, 3.30). Detroit is a +135 underdog with the total set at 9.

DeRosa given a well-earned rest

The Chicago Cubs gave Mark DeRosa two days off this week to ensure that he has recovered from a hamstring problem in time for Friday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

DeRosa has proved to be the ultimate utility man for the Cubs and has played at first base, second base, third base, right field and even at shortstop already this season.

"I'm all right," DeRosa told reporters after being pulled from Tuesday’s game. "I just felt something in batting practice and brushed it off as no big deal and that it would go away. That first at-bat, I could feel it, and when I hit the ground ball, I had to get after it getting to first base. They took me out as a precaution."

De Rosa is batting .284 with 50 RBIs and seven homers. On his return on Friday, the Cubs send Rich Hill (6-6, 3.58) to the mound to face the Reds Bronson Arroyo (4-11, 4.58). Chicago is a –116 favorite with the total set at 9 ½.

Crosby injured again

The Oakland Athletics have placed shortstop Bobby Crosby on the 15-day disabled list after he suffered multiple fractures in his left hand. The injury occurred when he was hit by a pitch from Angels reliever Justin Speier on Tuesday night.

Crosby was the AL rookie of the year in 2004, but has since been plagued by injuries. Last year he missed much of the season after he was diagnosed with a fracture in one of his vertebrae.

"Yesterday was the first day in a month and a half where I felt great at the plate," Crosby told MLB.com after his latest setback. "I felt like was getting some things figured out. Now I have to sit and watch. Again. It's almost indescribable how depressing it is."

Without their shortstop, the A’s continue a four-game series at Seattle on Friday. Dallas Braden (1-5, 5.15) faces Felix Hernandez (6-6, 4.02) on the mound and the Mariners are -165 favorites with the total set at 8 ½.

Streaking Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOT

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) - Pettitte couldn't make it through two innings during his start on July 1 but ever since then the Yanks have come out on top in each of his last four appearances and the team has outscored the opposition 45-18 in those games. New York is listed as a -139 favorites for tonight's scheduled game in Baltimore.

Jamey Wright (Texas Rangers) - The Rangers haven't done very many things right this year, but the price for Wright backers has been a bargain. Texas owns a 5-2 record when the righty is on the mound, which includes four victories as the underdog. The Rangers start their series in Kansas City as +123 underdogs tonight.

Claudio Vargas (Milwaukee Brewers) - The Brewers have been struggling lately and only carry a slim two-game lead in the NL Central heading into today's contest. The good thing for Milwaukee backers is that they can rely on Vargas to help their team win important games. Despite not pitching more than six innings in any of his previous eight outings, Brew Crew is 7-1 during that time. Vargas is listed as a slight -105 favorite in St. Louis.

COLD

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - The NL starter in the Midsummer Classic has lost three straight starts and his team has been shutout in both of his appearances in the second half. His pitch count has gone over a 100 in only six innings of work during both of those post-All-Star break outings. San Diego has just one victory in its last six games, but is a -148 fave in Houston.

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) - The righty has allowed three runs or less in each of his last four starts, but the Angels haven't been able to put any of those performaces in the win column. Weaver has been favored in his last eight outings and that streak continues tonight as the Halos host the AL Central leading Tigers as -140 faves.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies (-113, 10 ½)

If the Rockies are to have any chance at the NL West title, they have to find a way to beat the division-leading L.A. Dodgers. The Rox have lost 18 of the last 24 against the Dodgers, with 10 of those defeats coming at Coors Field.

The teams meet for an all-important four-game series this weekend, but in the opener last night, the Dodger’s domination of Colorado continued in a 5-4 win.

"We have to beat them," Colorado's Matt Holliday told reporters on Thursday. "They are in first place and we have to beat them when we play them."

The Rockies look to ace Josh Fogg to lead them to that much-needed win, but he is 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA in nine outings against the Dodgers and has lost his last four decisions against them.

Pick: Los Angeles +105

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds (+111, 9 ½)

The Cubs look to bounce back from one of their worst defeats of the season – 11-1 against St. Louis last night – when they take on the Cincinnati Reds today.

Chicago has been in fine form since the All-Star break, winning nine of 12 games to close to within two of the division leading Milwaukee Brewers. But despite the Reds' 44-59 record this season, the Cubs should not expect an easy game tonight.

"Basically, this game's a roller coaster, and you've just got to ride them out – weather the storms," Ken Griffey Jr. told the Associated Press ahead of this series. "We might not be able to make the playoffs, but we can go out and make it tough for other people."

Cincinnati sends Bronso Arroyo to the mound today looking to slow the Cubs charge for the division title, but he has lost both starts against them this year and is on course to have his worst record as a starter this season.

Pick: Cubs –119

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-103, 9 ½)

At 20-29, the Milwaukee Brewers have the worst road record of any division leading team. If they don’t turn it around soon, they could lose top spot in the NL Central to the Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers travel to St Louis on Friday to start a three-game series, having dropped three of their previous four games to the Cincinati Reds – the team with the worst record in the NL.

In the wake of the All-Star break pitching has become a problem for Milwaukee and their staff has posted a 4.49 ERA in 14 games since then. That, combined with their terrible road record, has allowed the Cubs to close what was an eight-game lead at the end of June, down to just two games.

Milwaukee has managed a 3-1 record against the Cardinals this season, but hasn't won a road series against a National League rival since the end of April.

Pick: Cardinals -103

The San Jose SaberCats and Columbus Destroyers clash in Arena Bowl XXI at New Orleans Arena on Sunday. The SaberCats are a 6.5-point favorite in the game, but the Destroyers have plenty of experience with big upsets after winning all three of their playoff games so far as underdogs.

On the Canadian gridiron this weekend Week 5 of the CFL season continues. Friday night’s lone game sees Hamilton visit Winnipeg, while on Saturday Edmonton faces Saskatchewan and B.C. battles Calgary.

With August just around the corner playoff races are heating up throughout Major League Baseball. The top matchups to keep an eye on in the American League include a clash of division leaders in Detroit and Los Angeles, and division battles Minnesota at Cleveland and Oakland at Seattle. Also on tap in the AL this weekend are the Yankees at Baltimore, Boston at Tampa Bay, Texas at Kansas City, and Toronto at the White Sox.

Over in the National League there are also a number of divisional faceoffs, including the Cubs at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at St. Louis, and the Dodgers at Colorado. The rest of the NL schedule includes Florida at San Francisco, Atlanta at Arizona, San Diego at Houston, Washington at the Mets, and Pittsburgh at Philadelphia.

With the playoffs less than three weeks away they’re getting into crunch time in the WNBA. The weekend schedule tips off on Friday night with four games as Houston visits San Antonio, Phoenix travels to Chicago, Indiana invades Seattle, and Minnesota tries to snap their 10-game losing streak when they host Los Angeles.

Saturday’s schedule is much lighter with only one game as first-place Detroit takes on Washington. The lull ends on Sunday as there are six games on the schedule, with both conference leaders in action as Los Angeles visits Detroit and San Antonio takes on Seattle. Also on Sunday there is Connecticut at New York, Houston at Chicago, Indiana at Phoenix, and Minnesota at Sacramento.

On the race track this weekend NASCAR returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Jimmie Johnson won at Indy last year, but points leader Jeff Gordon is the favorite at 6/1, followed by Tony Stewart, who’s coming off his first win of the season, at 7/1.

30 DIMER - CUBS WITH HILL....10 DIMERS - TORONTO WITH TOWERS, & DETROIT WITH ROBERTSON

30 DIMER - CHICAGO CUBS WITH HILL

The Cubs could not break out the broom last night in St. Louis, but they did manage to win another series, and the G-Man likes them to start this weekend set in Cincy off with a win.

It is no secret the Reds struggle against left-handed pitching, and tonight's pitching matchup has already produced a win for the Cubs back in April, as Rich Hill tossed 7 shutout innings in beating Cincinnati and Bronson Arroyo who actually had a solid start in that one, allowing 2 runs in his 7 innings.

Arroyo's good starts have been few and far between this season as he is just 4-11 for the year, and his home ERA is near 6!

Aside from last night, the Cubs have been swinging a mean stick lately, and I like them to get back on track tonight.

Take the Cubs to get the win.

10 DIMER - TORONTO BLUE JAYS WITH TOWERS

Strong underdog play tonight on the Jays with Towers, as Toronto has won their last 5, and Towers is coming off of 7 shutout innings in a home win over Seattle his last time out.

The White Sox looked good in taking 3 of the final 4 from Detroit, but Jon Garland did get rocked on the road his last start, and is below .500 for the season at home this year.

Plus, the Jays are 3-1 in the season series this year.

It all adds up to Toronto extending the winning streak to 6 in a row.

10 DIMER - DETROIT TIGERS WITH ROBERTSON

The Tigers just finished up a lengthy 5 game set with the White Sox, and while they dropped 3 of the last 4, they did hit the ball a ton in that series, and that hitting should carry over just enough tonight to help them get the win against an Angels team that has been scuffling of late.

The Halos have just 2 wins their last 6, and only 3 wins their last 10. The Angels are also just 2-3 in the season series this year, and Jered Weaver did take a loss in one of those starts lasting under 2 innings while giving up 7 hits and 7 runs - 5 of them earned.

Weaver hasn't won since the middle of June, and the Angels have dropped his last 4 starts. Nate Robertson will counter, and he just had a modest 2-game winning streak ended in a puzzling loss to Kansas City.
This is a possible playoff preview, and I am looking for the Tigers to steal game one of the weekend 3-gamer.

Larry Ness' 20* AL Game of the Month (167-85 TY!) $35.00 View

Guaranteed Pick: Larry Ness

Game: Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians Jul 27 2007 7:05PM
Prediction: Cleveland Indians
Reason: The Twins returned from the break and won four straight but enter this important three-game series at Cleveland having lost SEVEN of their last nine, including four-in-a-row! Confidence can't be high, as the Twins are 0-5 vs the Tribe in 2007, getting outscored 36-14. Cleveland is an outstanding home team, with a 35-18 mark despite losing three of four to the Red Sox this week. Boof Bonser goes for Minnesota and the right-hander last won a game on June 10. From June 16 through the All Star break he made five starts, going 0-4 (team was 0-5) with a 5.87 ERA. He's pitched better in two no-decisions since the break (Minny did win both) with a 3.21 ERA but Cleveland's been great vs right-handers at home this season, going 26-11 (plus-$860), while averaging 5.8 RPG. Paul Byrd starts for the Indians and he's 8-4 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts in '07 (team is 11-7). However, he's pitching his best ball of the season lately, as he's posted a 3.76 ERA over his last six starts, with the Indians winning FIVE of the six games. Byrd has also pitched well vs the Twins in his career, posting a 7-3 mark with a 3.95 ERA in 13 starts. The Indians are well-rid of the Red Sox and open the weekend with an easy win over Boof and the stumbling Twins. AL Game of the Month 20* Cle Indians.

7/27/2007 Larry Ness' 15* Bailout of the Week (now 78-26 TY) $35.00 View

Guaranteed Pick: Larry Ness

Game: Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels Jul 27 2007 10:05PM
Prediction: Los Angeles Angels
Reason: The Tigers are undoubtedly MLB's best road team (they were in '06 as well), going 34-20 (plus-$1,478) in '07. However, this is a very tough spot for them. Detroit has already played FIVE games in four days this week in Chicago, dropping three. After blowing a 3-2 eighth-inning lead yesterday afternoon, the Tigers are off the sunny California to open this three-game set with the first-place Angels (before heading to Oakland). The Angels (No. 3 at .283) hit almost as well as the Tigers (No. 1 at .290) and tonight, will have the better pitcher on the mound (Weaver over Robertson), as well as being the better rested team. Nate Robertson has pitched better since coming off the DL in June, posting a 3.64 ERA in five starts (team is just 2-3). Prior to that, he had a 5.21 ERA in 12 starts, with the Tigers going 4-8. Overall, Detroit is 6-11 in his starts (minus-$876), leaving him 244th among 250 starters in 2007. In six career starts vs the Angels, he's 0-3 (team is 1-5) with an 8.13 ERA (13.50 ERA in two starts at Angel Stadium). The Angels got off to an 8-4 in Jered Weaver's first 12 starts this year (3.80 ERA) but despite a 2.08 ERA in his last four starts, the team is 0-4, as the Angels have been able to score a total of just eight runs in those four games. That being said, runs should come much easier tonight off Robertson and I like the way Weaver is pitching. This is a GREAT spot for the Angels vs the travel-weary Tigers. Don't forget, the Angels are a splendid 32-16 at home! Bailout of the Week 15* LA Angels.

7/27/2007 Larry Ness' Las Vegas Insider (65% s/May 21!) $35.00 View

Guaranteed Pick: Larry Ness

Game: Atlanta Braves at Arizona Diamondbacks Jul 27 2007 9:40PM
Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks
Reason: The D'backs made it a four-game sweep of the Marlins with a 7-4 win Thursday night. Arizona won on a two-out, three-run HR in the 9th, giving the team a six-game winning streak. The six-game run is their fourth of the season of at least that many games and leaves them two wins shy of their longest win streak this year. Arizona moved into second place in the West, 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks were in first place in the division after games of June 27 but then dropped 14 of their next 19. The Braves come in losers of seven of their last 11 and will send rookie Jo-Jo Reyes to the mound. The lefty is winless in three starts (team is 0-3), allowing 16 hits, nine walks (just four Ks) and 10 ERs in 14.2 innings (6.14 ERA). He'll face an Arizona team that's 17-12 (plus-$660) vs left-handers this year, including averaging 5.1 RPG in 12 home games vs lefties. Yusmeiro Petit, also a rookie, makes his sixth career start for the D'backs. Petit has allowed two ERs or less in FOUR of his previous five starts (he's filling in for the Big Unit), posting an overall ERA of 2.54 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 23-9. His first five starts have all come on the road (impressive) and I expect him to be comfortable here in his first home start, especially with the D'backs playing so well. Las Vegas Insider on the Az D'backs.
