- 6 major sports teams (Nats, Wiz, Skins, O’s, Ravens, Caps) with decent arenas to watch them in. With the new stadium for the Nats in ’08, the oldest stadium will be 10 years old (Verizon Center) not counting RFK for the United. Even if you don’t like the local teams, (which I don’t) you can still watch your favorite team visit in every sport.

- Decent fan support for out of town teams. Again there are decent bars for out of town NFL teams in the area and you can pretty much find someone that likes your favorite team. Let your intentions be known you like another team than who’s not local in Philly or Texas and you can get your tires slashed or ostracized quickly.

- Redskin fans. Many of you guys know I’m a Jints fan and no I haven’t changed my allegiance of who I like in the NFL but if you have lived here near the nations capital they are straight comedy. I have to admit these guys love their teams to the death (see extremeskins.com). The hilarity is multiplied by 2 when their team tanks by the end of November but still looks forward to the ‘Boys game the end of the year.

Dislikes:

- Wack / Non existent natural rivalries. Come on now, the nations capital cant have a natural rivalry? No USC/UCLA, no Sox/Yanks, no Philly/New York, no Purdue / IU. Hell, I’ll take a New Mexico / New Mexico State. Shoot, how hard is it to schedule a GU / Maryland bball home at home each year?? The best natural rivalry we have is Maryland / WVU football??
Please.

- Crappy coverage of local teams. Shoot if the teams name aren't the Redskins or the Ravens, that team don’t exist. One of the more exciting NHL players in the league plays here in A. Ovechkin and you probably couldn’t get 5 people walking in NW to pick his face out of a lineup.

When I get froggy, I’ll add more.

Here in Vegas we really don't have much of a local team because everyone is from somewhere else.

Outside of the Tark Rebels, the locals won't support a team unless they are winning. Then they jump on the bandwagon.

Of course, being here in Vegas you have access to any of your favorites teams at pretty much any time. If it's being shown somewhere in the country, likely it is being shown in the sports book.

Dealing with the tourists can be a hassle and not worth the time, however.

We do have a rather uniquely global population and at any time I can see 20,000 Filipinos in town for a Pac-man fight or go down to the Crown for an England World Cup match.

Wow I forgot about that. Theres nothing like missing a classic Philly / NO game when fox shows a boring Washington / Arizona Cardinals game.

Hope you make it out to one of the bashes, Ironman. If not, I'll likely be back in that area at some point. Try and organize another get together if that scary Indian beast Raj is down.
If I'm still retired come basketball season, I'll likely hit a G-Town, Mason game or something. Come to think of it, I've never been to Terp country and that wouldn't be a bad option either.

Back to your original question. At least in your area you have teams to get passionate about. I was around for March Madness the year Mason played Maryland and the sports bar was packed and going nuts. I've also seen a few Hoya games as well as Bullets (I still call them that) and the fans have that attachment even when the teams aren't great. My dad went to GMU last year right before the Final Four to try and get me something and he said it was nuts.
Here in Vegas, we only have that on weekends for fights and I do miss big-time college football. The Death Valleys in Clemson, Touchdown Jesus in South Bend, even the pageantry of Army-Navy. When you attend a UNLV-New Mexico game, it just doesn't compare.

Hawaii - zero professional teams in any sport.....nearest stadium is 3,000+ miles and not worth the drive....

all we have is UH and they play in the WAC....basketball has never gotten past the first round of the dance and the football team will never get a better bowl game than the Hawaii Bowl (besides the delusional local talk of BCS this year)

....and with that, we are still subject to blackout!!!

I have one of the best. I can get both Chicago baseball teams on free tv. Get Bears and Colts for my local NFL tv games. Also Bulls on WGN, and local coverage of Notre Dame and DePaul. Sports radio is probably the best in the US. Also no Michigan teams.

Things that suck - Have to pay to get sports package on Directv to get the Comcast Chicago channel. Also, when will $ Bill Wirtz put a Blackhawk game on free tv?

As a native San Diegan born in 1968, I can stand here and tell you today...

"I have never celebrated a world championship in any major significant sport."

And, no, the San Diego Sockers, 10-time indoor champions, doesn't count.

No fucking NFL in the nation's 2nd largest market. That's just plain stupid.

I've gotten used to it. Not a big deal anymore...

Actually, a lot of NFL teams would love to come to LA, it's just that the NFL owners want us to pay for their new stadium and people in So Cal are too smart for that BS. Why should we pay for a new stadium that we'd be paying for decades so that the NFL owners can get rich? Now that's stupid...

Detroit you wankers, WE have won 2 world series. # NBA titles, 3 Stanly Cups, Drafted 7 WR's and 4 QB's in the 1st round in my lifetime.

But it's still Detroit.

Stadiums are top notch except for Joe Louis for the Wings. And we have Greek Block.
