First let me say I'm a St. Louis fan and follow this team closely. But that hasn't stopped me from betting against St. Louis at the drop of a hat if I see value on the other side. To me stats are only a starting point when handicapping a game. There are a lot of intangables involved.
On paper Milwaukee looks like a slam dunk today. But this line is set very low in my opinion. First off St. Louis has been good in day games this year (17-13) and very good on Sundays (11-5). Everyone knows Milwaukee has been a bad road team all year. When St. Louis came from 6 runs down to win the first game of the double header yesterday, for the first time this year I really saw some fire in the players. They came out in the second game and looked like a different team than the one I've been watching all year. They had a spring in their step and seemed to do everything faster and with more urgancy than normal. In other words they looked hungry for a win. This game today is a HUGE game for St. Louis. Remember, this team has some young players on it but it is mainly a team of veterans.
Wells has been horrible at times this year but has been pretty good in his last two outings. If he can keep the game close through the 6th inning and turn it over to the bullpen the Cards have a good chance to win this game.
I wouldn't bet on Milwaukee today with monopoly money but I don't think that St. Louis offers enough value to take them either. If the St. Louis line got up to +125 or +130 I would take a shot with them.
I just wanted to offer my views as someone who follows this team all year as I think a lot of people will look at this game on paper and unload on Milwaukee. Just be cautious.
