i don't know if this has bin brought up, since i was away all weekend. this past thur i was going to my sister's lake house and was listening to the John Thompson show (980AM wash, DC). he was talking about Vick. he was saying coaches will try to straighten out problem players, but it comes down to the owner either sticking up for the coach (Dan Reeves) or the player (Vick). Reeves got fired so the owner backed the star player. Thompson then said owners sometimes do this so they can be friends and be associated with a star athlete, "like a monkey in a zoo".

i don't know if anyone in the DC area heard this or anything about it. i bet if a white radio host said it he would have bin fired just like every other time it happens.

i know exactly the point he was making. the problem i have is the double standard. you don't think he would have bin fired if he were white?

I think that's where you are missing the point. Example: If a woman calls a woman a bitch it's not a problem. But if a man calls a woman a bitch it is. Everybody is sensitive to some level but this not the right quote to make your point. Reminds me of when I was in my teens and me and my buddies were in my room and my sister was yelling at me and I didn't hear what she were saying so I ask my buddy what did that bitch say? He replied that bitch said....and that's when the fight broke out. Only certain people can say certain things and we all need to be sensitive to each other.

I can tell you if a woman called my wife a bitch she'd get jacked in the jaw. White guy calls a black guy a monkey on air and he's fired immediately but a black guy gets a pass.

It's like the awards shows. What's the African-Amercian only awards show called? No white people can win awards but African-Americans are sure eligible to win an oscar. You can have ebony magazine only catered to African-Americans but if you came up with a publication called "Ivory" Jesse Jackson would be on your doorstep.

I guess if you have something already made up in your mind and feel a certain way, no examples nor explanation will do that trick. All I can say to that is there were once a time when they had to have the African-Ameican awards because if not blacks would have never got one. Also, the same with magazines, if not having any publications of their own, they would have never put in them "on front pages or anything". So without calling those magazines "Ivory", that's what it was. I'm guessing you might be a lil young and may miss my points (no offense) but people of the older generation can actually relate to what i'm saying if they are truthful.

I'm 32 dude and I know for a fact that African-American women are featured in may popular magazines these days but there are very specific magazines that cater only to African Americans meaning no white face will be seen on any page. That, to me in this day in age is bullshit and a double standard. If the shoes on the other foot then there would be protests by the NAACP on the front step of the publisher.

It simply can't and shouldn't work both ways.

Billy Packer called Allen Iverson a tough monkey in a college game and did not get fired.

America has had 100+ years of all white TV shows and magazine etc... After the cival rights movement you would have to be blind not to see why there is a double standard and no longer all white things.

So I make a point that all of us think about but just don't say and you start with the personal attack. That's fine alright but you can't tell me for one second that if an old white guy made a comment about a black athlete with the term "monkey" in his sentence he wouldn't be fired immediately.

Don Imus calls the Rutgers women's team "nappy headed hoes" and he's fired. Tell me you think a white broadcaster would be retained after this sort of comment.

He would have been gone before you had a chance to start the thread.

Everyone knows that a white broadcaster would be toast. Not a big deal to me, people are allowed much more leeway when they are referring to their own.

BTW, Husker....it's been, not bin. Come on man, you have to know that.

Sounds pretty accurate to me. I would have specified orangutan, though.

:puppy: I should have known. I've seen a lot of made up words around here over time, but that's bad.

firing a white guy for a racial comment, and letting black guys say racial comments without penalty, just creates more racism. i believe in free speech and everyone should be allowed to say what they want. people can choose to listen or not. the double standard has to go!
