MINNEAPOLIS - The NL East-leading New York Mets neatly filled a big hole at second base, acquiring three-time All-Star Luis Castillo for a pair of prospects Monday.

The 31-year-old Castillo adds speed to a batting order already topped by major league stolen base leader Jose Reyes. Castillo twice was the NL steals leader.
A three-time Gold Glove winner, Castillo also should solidly the defense in an infield with Reyes at shortstop, David Wright at third and Carlos Delgado at first base.
Minnesota gets catcher Drew Butera and outfielder Dustin Martin. The deal came a day before the deadline for making trades without waivers.
Castillo is hitting .304 but had just nine steals in 13 attempts and only 29 walks in 349 at-bats. He is making $5.75 million and is eligible for free agency after the World Series.
Ruben Gotay had been playing second since Jose Valentin broke a bone in his right leg when he fouled off a pitch at Dodger Stadium since on June 21.
Butera is batting a combined .231 with six homers and 26 RBIs this year at Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League and Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League.
Martin is hitting a combined .289 with five homers and 52 RBIs for St. Lucie and the Golf Coast League Mets.
The Twins recalled infielder Alexi Casilla to replace Castillo.

Excellent? That might be a bit of a stretch...

#23 2B in the majors, and Ruben Gotay, the Mets' prospect who has been playing 2B--granted with a small sample size--is outperforming him handily. I don't see how this improves the Mets really at all...yes they got him basically for free but he's not that good!

He's got good hands, but he's slow, and he's just not that good of a hitter anymore.

Hitting over .300 and a great contact hitter behind Reyes...I agree that the trade seems wierd....:think2:

Like I said, the fact that they got him for nothing makes it not a BAD trade, but I just don't think it makes them much better. Basically they're going with an old, creaky veteran over a young guy and the improvement in offense the old guy is bringing is small, if it's even there.

They're exhibiting the classic fear of young players exhibited by teams with bloated payrolls and I just don't think it pays off in the long run. Yes, Castillo is a "contact" hitter as you say, but contact hitters have been documented to be overrated...sure, he's hitting .30x but his OPS is just above .700 and that's marginal, at best.

The Mets are expecting to be in the World Series and you don't know what Gotay will be a month from now. I like him, but who knows what he's like in the playoffs? We're talking about a guy who the Mets took off the KC scrap heap. At least Castillo has played in a World Series and he's a better glove.

One thing is for sure, Torii Hunter wasn't happy at all yesterday when the press talked to him about the trade.
