The Red Sox and Rangers have agreed to an Eric Gagne deal, pending Gagne waiving his no-trade clause, sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
It's very possible that Gagne will block the deal, though the Red Sox could try to sway him by guaranteeing the remainder of his $3.625 million bonuses for games finished. Rosenthal doesn't say who will go the other way, though David Murphy and Kason Gabbard keep getting mentioned. Joaquin Benoit could close for Texas until Akinori Otsuka returns.

Gagne will be worthless; he had a couple good years and, other than that, has done nothing. He'll be a marginal pitcher with lots of stints on the DL.

...and they had to throw in the young 16 yr old, Beltre...

Beltre is compared to be the next Ken Griffey Jr...the Red Sox JUST signed him for $600K...which is astronomical for a teenage signing in Dominican...just goes to show this kid's potential.

so the deal is still waiting approval from Gagne:

Red Sox Get: Eric Gagne

Rangers Get: Gabbard/Murphy/Beltre (three promising prospects)

also of note...Yankees would not trade Ian Kennedy or Melky Cabrera for Gagne.

ESPN is reporting that Engel Beltre would be included in an Eric Gagne deal with the Rangers, giving Texas three players.
Kason Gabbard and David Murphy are believed to be the other two. This makes the trade look a whole lot better for Texas. Beltre is just 17 and is even further away than Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz, but he was one of the top international players available in the 2006 signing period. He ended up taking a $600,000 bonus from Boston.

You people are nuts Gabbard is a moveable piece for the Red Sox. This is a great deal for the Red Sox great deal IMO.

it might be OK to make a deal that might be shortsighted if its helps win a world series now.

Gagne can help now, Gabbard might have been out of the rotation when Schilling comes back. Maybe they are not very high on Gabbard in Boston. that seems likely too

so trading pieces that cant help you now for one that can. its not the worst idea when you already have more than a fair chance to win

The Red Sox scored one of the biggest coups at the non-waiver trade deadline Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Eric Gagne from the Rangers.

Gagne, 31, waived his no-trade clause to Boston in exchange for financial considerations. The Red Sox also assured Gagne that he will close games on nights that Jonathan Papelbon is unavailable.

In return for Gagne, the Rangers received left-hander Kason Gabbard, Class AAA center fielder David Murphy and Class A outfielder Engel Beltre, sources say. Beltre is just 17 years old.
Before reaching agreement with the Red Sox, the Rangers had discussed trading Gagne to the Mets, Yankees and Brewers. He could have been sent to each of those teams without his permission.

Peter Gammons (usually Red Sox homer bias) just said on ESPN that the Rangers got a lot of value for their players...and Gabbard should have a great career w/ the Rangers (being a ground ball pitcher) & instantly becomes their best SP.

Also of mention...the top signee from the amateur FA class...in Beltre.

Sox gave up too much, imo....especially for a rental player who is long over due for a DL visit.

It definitley makes games in Boston much shorter this year.

Those who are saying they gave up too much are forgetting Boston isn't a small market team. If they were an Oakland, or Minnesota than this would have been a bad trade because they can't afford big name free agents. Even if these young guys turn out to be stars, Boston can write a check and sign a superstar.

In related news, Yankees got bullpen help today too. They traded Proctor.

Expect Joba Chamberlain to be up by this weekend. Kid is sick, ripping it close to 100 mph in the minors. He'll be in the bullpen for the rest of this year, but a starter eventually. I completely believe that by 3 years from now, Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy will be regarded as a Mulder/Zito/Hudson type. Throw Wang in there and the Yankees have some very solid young pitching to build around.

good points, fuc...

I also strongly believe Chamberlain's 1st relief appearance last night...basically gave Cashman the confidence to make the deal for Betemit...as the Proctor/Betemit deal has been on the table for a few weeks now.

But w/ Chamberlain striking out the side on 13 pitches, while touching 99 mph...he'll def. be brought up into the bullpen role & eventually moved to SP next season.

Should be entertaining...which is important as well.
