NFL Network intercepts Deion's attempt to write about Vick

By Elizabeth Neus, Gannett News Service
The NFL Network has asked analyst Deion Sanders to stop writing about the Michael Vick case after Sanders' newspaper column on Vick and dogfighting came under fire on ESPN Radio and drew criticism from across the nation.

Sanders has been writing a weekly column for The (Fort Myers, Fla.) News-Press, his hometown newspaper, since January. Under his new contract with the NFL Network, the network has the exclusive right to Sanders' image and opinions regarding NFL matters.
Last week, Sanders' column was on Vick, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback facing felony conspiracy charges connected to dogfighting.
READ DEION'S COLUMN: Plus reaction from his hometown.
"What a dog means to Vick might be a lot different than what he means to you or I," Sanders wrote. "Some people enjoy proving they have the biggest, toughest dog on the street. You're probably not going to believe this, but I bet Vick loves the dogs that were the biggest and the baddest. Maybe, he identified with them in some way.
"You can still choose to condemn him, but I'm trying to take you inside his mind so you can understand where he might be coming from."
On Thursday, the day that Vick pleaded not guilty to the charges in a federal court, ESPN Radio host John Kincade blasted Sanders' column, triggering a wave of criticism from across the country, as well from as Sanders' hometown of Fort Myers.

When Sanders submitted his follow-up column responding to the criticism to the NFL Network, the network refused to let The News-Press publish it on Sunday.
"This column and subsequent variations of it (are) not approved by NFL Network. It cannot run," said the e-mail from Thomas George, the NFL Network managing editor, to News-Press sports editor Ed Reed.
"It's unfortunate," Reed wrote in Sunday's paper, "because Deion really wanted you to see it. It was his best work since he started writing his column in January."
Reed wrote that the criticism from Fort Myers bothered Sanders: "He had hoped his previous writings on race relations, children and family had shown his character and values. He was surprised that people, after reading the full column, saw him excusing Vick and condoning dogfighting or that he was sticking up for a rich athlete."
Sanders told Reed in an interview that "the NFL is like a fraternity. The real issue to me is, I think anybody, if someone in their family has done wrong or is doing wrong or made a bad, terrible decision, do we stone them or do we pray for them? I definitely, absolutely do not condone anything, but I am praying for him."
The NFL Network is permitting Sanders to write future columns for the News-Press as long as any NFL-related content meets the network's approval. Sanders writes on a freelance basis, and has no contract with the newspaper.
"It's my hometown," Sanders said. "I want to stay connected to my hometown."

Because if you read the article I think Deion may be the first person to point out that the media is using Mike Vick because they know they can...

This is the biggest news story even though this is murder of animals... People are making a bigger deal out of this then the murder of a human....

I think this article is great and true...

Is he the ring leader of all dog fighting... doubtful... So is this going to stop... doubtful....

I can see how people could take this article the wrong way...

But come on read it and actually think about it... There is a reason he can only get 6 years in jail for this...

Vick is an asshole and wrong as Deion says... but this guy isn't nearly as bad as murderers...

What if Vick was raising sheep to fight one another...would this be alright? What about the millions of hunters around the world that mow down countless animals in the name of game? How come Brett Favre isn't attacked by PETA for shooting that elk this weekend? Because a dog is "smarter" than a deer we give it more rights? Our entire society is 100% insane as a whole. The govt and media control the thoughts of nearly everyone

What ever happened to euthanizing an animal when its time has come. I have been reading these articles and they are electrocuting these pitbulls, drowning them and all kinds of strange inhumane ways to get rid of the animals.

I think Deon does try to open a door into the mind of dog fighting enthusiasts and in many cultures there all kinds of inhumanities happening and no one is doing anything about it. Look at bullfighting in Spain and Mexico. They like to see how many swords they can put into the bull before it dies and tourists flock from all parts of the world to watch them perform their trade and I bet some of these same people that run with the bulls every year and torment these animals to no end are following the Vick situation and saying what an asshole he deserves to die etc.....

Deion has a point. Vick doesn't get it. He truly believes that these dogs love to fight and he believed there was nothing wrong with it.
Stupid, yes. Put him away.
Still, he isn't as bad as that asshole Ray Lewis, who took part in the murder of a human being and got away with it. There wasn't nearly as much publicity in that case and Lewis walked. And he's considered some kind of spokesman for the NFL.

Will say this again, if it was someone other then a huge star like Vick nobody would care. Dogfighting still happens all over the country and will still continue to occur. You seriously have more people backing these dogs then the infant who is thrown in the trash or microwaved alive. This is all media driven, typical dumb Americans just believing whatever is reported.

Just happen to look up dog fighting and ....

Dog fighting has been documented in the recorded history of many different cultures, and is presumed to have existed since the initial domestication of the species. Many breeds have been bred specifically for the strength, attitude, and physical features that would make them better fighting dogs.

Scholars speculate that large-scale human migration, the development of trade, and gifts between royal courts of valuable fighting dogs facilitated the spread of fighting dog breeds. There are many accounts of military campaigns which utilized fighting dogs, as well as royal gifts in the form of large dogs.

Blood sports involving the baiting of animals has occurred since antiquity, most famously at the Colosseum in Rome during the reign of the Roman Empire. However, in contemporary times, it is most associated with the English, who pursued it with utmost earnestness, which was barely known elsewhere in the world. For over six hundred years the pastime flourished, reaching the peak of its popularity during the sixteenth century. The various animal types involved in the bait allowed for the breed specialization and basic anatomical forms of fighting dogs, which we see today.

Dog fighting has been popular in many countries throughout history and continues to be practiced both legally and illegally around the world.

Don't be so sure. Quite a few rumors of another endictment in August-rumored to be Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations(RICO).

If that turns out to be correct, anything is possible.

Why do people continue to compare this to hunting? I can give you a very simple explanation why it's completely different.

Hunting is legal, dogfighting isn't.

Hunting is legal, dogfighting isn't.

So if dog fighting was legal you wouldn't have a problem with it?

That is far from a quality explanation... Just because things are legal and illegal doesn't make them right or wrong
